Good is debateable, but Warcraft is pretty extensive. Well thought out? Well, there have been a few issues over the past.
Fable, Halo, Dragon age and the witcher all have plenty of in game lore and wiki's to keep you satisfied.Tazzman1000Going to the wikis kinda kills it for me. I want to immerse myself, and if you read someone else's writing it's taken away.
their lore is separate, but each of souls games is brilliant. you'll get a brief cutscene at the beginning of each that sets the stage and then youre on your own. some easy to find npc's will fill you in further, but even they hide secrets until you complete some very missable sidequests. items each have descriptions that tell you more about the world, so the reward for finding some gear your build wont ever use is still great. item placement, enemy placement, and other parts of the level design as well as enemy design are embedded with nuggets of information. even the systems and mechanics are delivery methods for more background. everything is so integrated that you experience a world more than you get told a story.

True I'd rather find the lore in game aswell, however it gets really annoying in games like oblivion where some of the books can only be found as loot and you have to spend ages finding it. It gets tedious, especially in oblivions many copy and pasted dungeons.
Knights in the Nightmare. Despite the fact that it is basically a stand alone game, the world feels very fleshed out and very detailed.
The Xenogears/Xenosaga lore is very extensive. I think Monolith soft even published a few Complete Works books to explain the game's background and world. There is so much backstory on anything and everything in the two games, you can tell that the creators really put a lot of effort into creating the world.
Noone yet mentioned Baldu's Gate / Forgotten Realsm at all?
- Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
- Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2
- Icewind Dale 1 & 2
All of those not only have expensive lore to check out, but their universe is the same and in some ways connected. Can take you a lifetime to study it though.
Also, The Elder Scrolls Series, though there lore started to get deep with 2 and really in depht in three, with lesser lore in IV and V again. That moment in Morrowind when I found an abandoned shack at the ocean shore to the west coast of Morrowind and a note in it written in such a poetic style that the best poem writers and robots would have cried and when I realized this masterpiece of writing had NOTHING to do with any side or mainquest but was just being there for the cause of just being there.....gosh, I will never forget why Morrowind was and still is the best of all Elder Scrolls games in my opinion.
That's kinda cheating :P While the story of the games themselves are original, the setting and the lore that encompasses them has been around for decades in Dungeons & Dragons.Noone yet mentioned Baldu's Gate / Forgotten Realsm at all?

If we're going by that logic, then star Wars is a must.

Never intended to deny that. It's just he asked for games ^^Justforvisit

I wasn't implying that Star Wars's lore was as deep or whatever, but with all of the extended universe stories, the lore is certainly quite extensive. So why not say Star Wars? There is a ton of lore in it.

Lemme see.
Baldues Gate
Planescape torment
Fallout
Gungrave
the Legend of Zelda games (belive it or not)
MechWarrior
Starcraft (likely)
Warcraft (altho the later expansions to WoW, really messed it up)
Conflict Freespace
Homeworld
Metroid might be considered aswell
Deus Ex series
Thief series
Icewind Dale
Dead Space
Most older Final Fantasy games.
Earthbound
Chrono trigger
Looking at my list, most of the ones i remember are RPGs, not sure if its becaue its my favorite genre, or because they tend to have the best most extensive lore.

Naaah, Star Wars Lore can only wish to be as deep as only 1% of forgotten realms, trying to go there in 100 years and still wouldn't have scratched 0.0001 % of The Forgotten Realms. Because by THAT logic, Star Wars is around since the 1970. D&D is around since....hm dunno, but certainly a lot longer. Though, both certainly have in common that fans of the "old generation" were mad at those of the "new generation" ^^Justforvisit

So you're going to completely ignore all of the books, comics and whatnot that have been written in the Star Wars universe? Really?
Also the Force Unleashed had a pretty cool story that expanded on the story of the original movies.
Despite the fact that most of the expanded universe isn't a video game, the fact of the matter is that the games take place in the same universe as the books, movies, etc, so the same lore applies to the games.
I'm already familiar with Zelda games which imo has more appeal gameplay wise with limited lore or at least nothing worthwhile retaining other than different types of Triforce fragments, Link and Zelda and Ganon. Some pretty good suggestions in this thread though.
I don't really watch tv too much so I look for games that will last a long time with interesting backstories. Any more suggestions, let me know!
