You drive your friends crazy about it. They groan as you rant on and on and on about a game that they couldn't care less about. And the sad truth is that neither does anyone else. Game developers spend around a year on average (depending on the game) making a game, and most of them are playable. But some are so dull, according to some, that it just doesn't play the way the developers had in mind when creating the game. Even though they went through all the trouble of creating a game, the developers end up with egg on their faces when they realise what they've created isn't anything spectacular.
Who here has felt this towards a game before? Games that you've loved, or at least enjoyed, yet everyone else you know doesn't.
My answer would have to be Juiced, which got a 6.3 on GameSpot. GameSpot's Player Reviews for Juiced vary from 1.0 right up to 10 (by a few people), but most of them are less than 7.
Highly criticised for its rather shallow, yet extensive career mode, Juiced isn't actually that bad of a racer, and I've played just about every racing game that there is; at least since the start of the 21st century. The actual driving component is really something. This was the first game that had crew members (I think), which was something I really enjoyed. There are heaps of cars, lots of customisation possibilities (over 7.5 trillion according to the game's rear cover) and, as long as you're adamant on tuning and racing, you'll enjoy the game heaps.
As mentioned above, I've played a lot of racing games in my lifetime. Here's where I stack up the driving in this game compared to others. The games were chosen under the criteria of visual components, its realism and overall "vibe" it presents - you can associate the vibe with things like "kiddy" for Mario Kart, "serious" for Gran Turismo, "fast paced" for Burnout, etc.
- Gran Turismo (not biased despite my avatar)
- Forza
- Mario Kart
- Need for Speed
- Burnout
- Juiced
- Motorstorm
- Project Gotham Racing
- Midnight Club
- Colin McRae Rally
This is simply a personal list - there's no guarantee that you'll like Juiced. Its main point of criticism is towards the topsy-turvy Career mode, where you can lose all of your fortune in a matter of races, which means you'll have to sell a car. But this, I believe, is where its true strength shines. The game plays like a sim, but is disguised as an arcade racer. In this scenario, you'll have to drive perfect to gain some cash and get back on top.
So tell me. What are the games that you like that everyone hates. Tell me your reasons as to why it's a good game, too. It doesn't need to be as detailed as mine, but at least present something simple, i.e. Juiced because I like the customisation options.
