How? It's not its focus, unlike other games that flaunt it at you.

Obviously havent played Bayonetta 2 (duh) but it's not exactly a strong/worthy critique if a game doesnt depend on it. Whereas a story driven game that does depend on narrative should be rightfully critiqued if the narrative is a big part of the experience and just ends up being poor/unfullfilling.

Bayonetta 1's long cutscenes were probably the only thing i disliked about the 1st game, really. For just breaking some of the momentum and often its tone. This one seems to break away from that and puts in place more eventful gameplay scenarios.

And Destiny focuses just as much on the gameplay. So why again is it so much worse? They still make videos about the game

Three of the other games on the 10/10 list have virtually no story, too. A game that relies on story but has an awful one is what gets ripped. Bayonetta relies on its moment-to-moment craziness to propel you through combat sections and crazy-other-stuff sections.

Other games get ripped for being repetative, this is the exact same thing...

It's the same principle as story. Repetitive gameplay is ripped when the gameplay is bad, or, at the very least, lacks any sort of variety. The reviewer spends several paragraphs talking about the combat mechanics, which is simply not possible with bad repetitive gameplay.

Like most Platinum games, Bayonetta's mechanics are far deeper than you might think. I've played the demo five times now trying to get higher medals in each section, and I've learned a bit more each time, even though the demo has none of the special stuff that gets unlocked as the game progresses. (And I know from my extensive time with The Wonderful 101 that the combat will get really deep by the end of the game.)

i played Vanquish and MGSR: Revengeance. Those games were repetative except for perhaps the bosses. i would claim Destiny is the same. Nobody of the reviewers even finished the raid when they reviewed it.

Wait......ummm....... the raids were just released to the public last week. The reviews that went up came out a few days after the release and the raids weren't available to anyone at that time.

No... They came out the same week, i have been raiding for 3 weeks now...

@The_Last_Ride: to be fair, Bayonetta's story is deliberately campy. It's over-the-top because of course it is. It's not trying to be another The Last of Us, Walking Dead, BioShock, etc. If you wanna follow it, expect goofy things everywhere (like many Japanese stories). If you wanna ignore it, you can. The game's combat will keep you satisfied.

i am not calling it a bad game, but why is it that when other games ignore the story mostly don't get a pass and yet this does?

It depends on how much story is emphasized in a game. If the Last of Us had a poor story, the game would have been much more negatively reviewed because that's a big part of the experience. Games like mario, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry are all about the gameplay and involvement. They are more about the mechanics and design so a story isn't necessary to let those aspects shine. In fact a story/some sort of logic would get in the way of some of the crazy and creative situations these games put you through.

No it isn't. Story is pretty important to Destiny too. I love Destiny and think it's a great game but I won't deny that they screwed up the story and lore of that game in some pretty big ways. The story telling in it is very weak and too thinly spread out and putting all the lore and interesting facts on their website and something that you have to access out of game was not smart.

No... Destiny has like 6 or 7 cutscenes that last a minute. That's not a big part of the game...The lore is awesome, the story is not.

@The_Last_Ride: Well that's what I mean, they should have put more story into Destiny because it needed it. The lackluster story telling is something that hurt the game. There's great lore but that's all mostly something that one has to go out of the game to get which is also something that hurt Destiny as well, it should be easily accessible in the game.

I could do that but it's just not the same. There's a great story potential there if you go and read all the lore it's just that it's all outside of the game and the story-telling in the game is very poorly done. Sometimes you can use your imagination to craft your own stories in games but sometimes I just want to be told a great story. To me Destiny feels more suited to the latter.

It doesn't hurt the game, could the game have better story? Sure it could, same exact thing with Bayonetta. It's not that i mind that it doesn't get a 9 or 10. That's not the point. I don't care about that. It's the consistency and the principle that they differantiate between different games and just pick certain games they like even though they don't ignore similar faults with those games

@Lulu_Lulu: what he's saying is he wants to be the main participant in the story being told instead of being a casual observer of the events.

The story-telling in Destiny does hurt the game though because it's poorly done and lacking in content. Bayonetta 2 is a crazy over-the-top story. These don't mean the same things at all and are not representative of any inconsistency.

So jumping in because i had to respond to this comment.

Wanting a game to tell a story isent passive because 99% sure that most also wants the story to be told in a interactive way.

I will never get this idea that gameplay-gamers have about story and that just because the game tells a story its also passive.

People don't passive story telling methods so naturally when it story time thats developers go to method. Go ahead.... Ask him, I'm sure he doesn't mind Story by Cutscene.

I dont mind a story told by cut-scenes for the most part, but that doesn't mean that if the developer isent holding his head on his arm, that the game wont be connected and also tell something during the interactive sequences. So im sure he wouldn't mind either.

But i know you have an aversion against story in games :D

Really? Because I remember having a similar discussion with you before. Anyway having a preference one way or another is fine, the problem lies when one tries to force that preference as the "right" or "correct" way.

Really.... I don't remember

Not everything can be a preference... And although there is no right or wrong way there are redundant or counter intuitive ways.

Its redundant for a game to tell a story the exact same way a movie does.

Can' say I'm surprised. I don't think there's a being alive who could tell you the story of the first game, but goddamn if it isn't one of the most entertaining gaming experiences out there. Sadly I don't have the funds to get my copy of 2 yet, but I will ASAP.
