I knew I could hear someone saying my name! :D

Anyway that review is totally crap and obviously biased. The game deserves an 18, at least.

Eurogamer also has their review up, they gave it a 9. They're a bit critcial of some of the artistic choices, but they seem to be impressed overall.

In the forseeable future there is no way I will be able to play Crysis. I just hopefuture console games steal cool ideas like chopping down trees with a chaingun from it, processing power permitting.

I'd bet on it. Destructible environments have already started to make their way into games in limited forms, but I think now that a game has really pulled them off we'll see developers doing their best to get into their games so they can "keep up with the joneses".

The only bad thing that could be said about this game is the fact that a very small percentage of people are gonna be able to play it today. The system requierements are insane, heck even on the video review there was noticeable tearing, so even if GameSpot´s own PC´s can handle the game seamlessly, what hope does an average gamer has? I´ll be playing this game in 2-3 years.

This game is WAAAAY ahead of our time!

The question is : Waaaay ahead of our time or just poorly programmed.Of course you need much power to do everything in real-time,but who really needs it anyway?Riddick for examle tricked a bit here and there and the result was awesome...but since I can´t shake the feeling PC-games only get high ratings with overdone system-requirements (HL2,Doom 3) I didn´t wonder that much about it.If you can´t really rate a game that ypou can´t play on the optimum specs...but does anyone think someone has cared that much about this game if it whould look slightly worse and whould be possible on a payable PC?No.Why?Because it whould be just another good looking FPS.With all the work in the Graphics, there was not much time left for some unimportant stuff like unique gameplay.

I don´t have anything against great looking games but I hate it if devs are producing games that don´t really work instead of spending some time to make it right. At least PC-games have a execuse now to pay too much for hardware :P

For those who really want to play it : Wait for the 360-version.The Producer said it will be ported slightly modified if it gets a 5% higher overall rating compared to FarCry.They see no problem why they shouldn´t.We will see...

I have never used any level editor let alone seen anything to do with level creation and yet when I tried the Editor in the demo it was almost like I was using an easy program like photoshop (some guesswork involved though). It even gave me a preview of the epic weapons in this game! I don't want to spoil things, but they make a very big bang :P

The last I heard Crysis X360 is going to have only a nodding relationship with the PC version.

http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2007/01/15/crysis-gets-its-own-xbox-360-version.htm

"And with Crysis, the [Xbox] 360 game is not gonna be the same game. It's in the same universe, but it's using the DirectX9 engine, not the DirectX10 engine, so a lot of the hooks for Crysis, it needs to run deeper, it needs to go a lot more about the way the psysics and the way that the world is constructed, because the [Xbox] 360 version is not gonna be the sort of wowy or amazing [as the PC version]. And we were grilling him [the developer], saying, is it going to be like Far Cry and Far Cry Instincts. I mean, is it just a sort of different variation. And they said: no we're not even trying to replicate Crysis, it's going to be the same universe, some of the same story elements, but it's not a port of the [PC] game in any way, because it would just be really disappointing otherwise [regarding the graphics]."

Honestly, I can't say that I'm particularly surprised, but I'm glad that the game doesn't have any meaningful flaws. The demo just completely blew me away, I replayed the damn thing for about 5 times and every time had a different experience - I don't think there's a FPS out there that nailed open-endedness like Crysis did. The level is absolutely huge and you have these objectives (some are optional), but the way you go about them is entirely up to you. It looks fantastic, it's incredibly cinematic and immersive, and the gunplay coupled with some imaginitive uses of your suit - is pure bliss.

Contrary to popular belief, Crysis is superbly optimized considering how big the levels are, how good it looks, and most importantly the 100% environmental interactivity. I don't have a high-end PC (Athlon 64 3000+, 1,5 GB of RAM, 7900GS 256MB) and I could run this thing very well with most settings on medium and a few on high at 1024x786 resolution. This is reality trapped on a disc. Just a stupid example: in Crysis you can shoot off a big branch, split it into smaller bits and then pick them up and throw them at your enemies. Shoot a barrel and if the content isn't flammable, it will start pouring out. The game recognizes everything as it would happen in real life, that's an incredible achievement in and of itself, and yet there's so much more to Crysis.

Well i have to say every score i've seen Crysis get so far is pretty much what i expected although i did think that Gamespot might give it a 9.0 instead of a 9.5 but that could be because i think the game is more deserving of a 9.0.

game is amazing, revolutionizes the genre, takes realism to a whole new level. The gameplay is dyamic, you can play a scenario many different ways. Easily one os the best most amazing games ever, glad I got a great PC, between this and the witcher, Pc gaming rocks. The little details are amazing, you can tear offa branch, beat an enemy with it, pick up small wildlife and throw it at enemies, sneal up to a hut, use strength mode to collapse the hut on the enemies. You can set fire traps using oil barrels, etc..., i can go on and On, this game rocks. COd4 looks like crap all of a sudden with its scripting, no physics, and no replay value.

The Bad
  • The single-player story ends
  • Will laugh at every CPU and GPU thrown at it
  • No team deathmatch.
Jason Ocampo

I like that first point. :) The game eventually ends. Dammit!

Unfortunately, because of the second point, I'm not going to be playing this any time soon.

i dont know this game doesnt do a whole lot for me other than the fact it is pretty. maybe its a victim of the flood of FPS games that seem to drop every week. i cant get excited for it. that and.. for some reason ive grown to like FPS on consoles more than on PC. i know they control better on a PC, yet for some reason i like console better. might be because i am not hardcore into the genre, o well.

That's total BS, the gameplay is better then any other shooter this year, very dynamic. Console shooters can't hold a candle to a game like Crysis. This game makes COD4 look boring. There is a lot more to Crysis then amazing visuals, if all you see is the graphics, that's all your allowing yourself to see, amazing dynamic gameplay, can play many different ways.

Well, judging from Far Cry and what I've seen so far, it's not that amazing. Maybe it's just because I really don't like the visual style. I would happily give it an 8. Just to make things clear, I could easily do the same for Halo 3, COD4 and Bioshock.

Umm, the one thing no one can deny is how amazing the visuals are, some places look photo realistic, did you even play it on very high settings? Makes Gears, COD4 look blah. Add to that a level of realism never seen before and dynamic gameplay and a good story? A classic. Judging from Far Cry? Crysis is ten times better, and what does far cry have to do with anything?

using aliens in an FPS is as played out as using the heroic youngster who is destined to save the world in an RPG. i am sick of it. others must be sick of it. please, for the love of god, stop with the stupid effing aliens already. they arent interesting or surprising anymore.

Ummm, yeah I suppose I wasn't very clear on that one. I mean it has the same technocratic vibe as Far Cry, which is no wonder since it's the same team. It feels like the game is focused less on fun and more towards what the engine can do.As far as the gfx are concerned, it looks bloody amazing, but the STYLE, mainly artistically speaking, is not my cup of tea. Not that it's not a quality game, of course. And it does look a cut above the rest FPSs out there, but I find it a bit lacking in atmosphere. Then again, I'm no big FPS fan.

You can say that about every shooter, everything has been done, what do you propose you can fight, giant clams? All shooters are the same toa point, does that mean Crysis, halo 1-3 and half life games suck or are not great? No, just a haters excuse.

The gameplay takes realism to a whole new level, no game comes close to the detail Crysis does, it isn't just the graphics, the gameplay is incredibly realistic and dynamic, makes COD4 look boring. Read the reviews, they detail it quite well.

stop mentioning COD4. i never brought it up. i dont care about it. my point is the main enemy in almost every fps is some alien race that is trying to take over. its played out. how about something interesting like working for a criminal orginazation, or maybe a modern day militia who is fed up with the way their country (say the US) is run. its not hard to come up with something more compelling than "O NOES SLIMY GUYS WANT TO KILL US AND TAKE OUR CHEERIOS!".

No it isn't more often it is just enemy soldiers liek COD games, it doesn't matter if the enemy is aliens, like I said, everything has been done, fighting humans like you said has been done 1000 times as well, if a game is as good as crysis, aliens being the enemy is a moot point. The game is great, same as Half Life, doesn't matter if Aliens is the enemy, everything has been done. Your not just fighting aliens BTW, also, how many games have zero gravity?

It's still a valid complaint from the stanpoint that despite several strong advances, this game has one element that some view as either heavily cliche, or at the very least a grossly overused concept that some games use as a crutch to some degree.

As much as Crysis is a technical marvel, and a good game on top of that, some people just aren't going to care as much about its achievements as others.

Also, your arguments here aren't coming off very clear, as you are bringing in points that are irrelevent to what people are talking about regarding Crysis.

[QUOTE="OneWingedAngeI"]stop mentioning COD4. i never brought it up. i dont care about it. my point is the main enemy in almost every fps is some alien race that is trying to take over. its played out. how about something interesting like working for a criminal orginazation, or maybe a modern day militia who is fed up with the way their country (say the US) is run. its not hard to come up with something more compelling than "O NOES SLIMY GUYS WANT TO KILL US AND TAKE OUR CHEERIOS!".spiltmilk

No it isn't more often it is just enemy soldiers liek COD games, it doesn't matter if the enemy is aliens, like I said, everything has been done, fighting humans like you said has been done 1000 times as well, if a game is as good as crysis, aliens being the enemy is a moot point. The game is great, same as Half Life, doesn't matter if Aliens is the enemy, everything has been done.

how many hours have you put into the game? fighting humans has been done alot and right behind that is aliens. its just lame. everything has not been done or if it has, the FPS genre is in for some trouble. alot of it is fighting humans because, guess what, thats what we know. aliens at one point held some wow factor but at this stage its almost a joke in a shooter when i see them.

i understand you think the game is an 11/10, but not everyone feels that way. im in no way saying its bad. graphics are offf the wall. gameplay looks good. i just think its just another shooter though and aside from the graphics there is nothing that puts it miles above another shooter. thats all im saying.

I disagree. The level of open-endedness and environmental interactivity are both unparalleled, the latter being downright revolutionary. I would go so far as to say that Crysis might very well be the biggest step forward for the genre since Half-Life, or at least since Half-Life 2.

1UP has always been a site that, well, never quite focused on PC gaming nor ever seemed to care about it.

The gave Far Cry an 8.4 when pretty much all other sites where giving a 9 and over....they gave The Witcher a 7.6 when many gamer and even critics are saying it's the best CRPG to appear in a long time with an average in the mid-8's....the list goes on.

Most would agree that PC has a good year in 2004....with titles like HL2, WoW, Rome Total War, Far Cry, etc.....yet PC was snubbed that year, as well as pretty much every other year when it comes to GOTY time.

1UP is basically the online equivalent of EGM, so in terms of games on the PC platform, they are the last ones I would trust.

Has anyone read 1UP's review to see what the negative aspects of the game are? I'm too lazy to do so. That and the site is a pain to navigate.

Please stop judging the game before you even play the whole thing.

What about Games for Windows Magazine, formerly, Computer Gaming World? That's part of the 1UP network too.

yep, Crysis takes realism to new unprecedented levels. Easily a step forward for the genre.

About what I expected. I'm a bit disappointed by the single player length, Far Cry was longer than your normal 8-10 hours and I had kind of expected the same from Crysis, but shortening games seems to be the norm nowadays so that's definitely not something I will hold against the game. Between Halo and this I will have a really hard time to decide my personal FPS GOTY.

I find it funny eurogamer mentioned that this game probably would create a rabid army of fans, and TBH I already see some of that in this thread. I hope it doesn't get as bad as it got for Halo back in the day, I hate it when games are more known for their annoying fanbases than for being good games.

Now the question is, what should my first Crysis single player map be like? I made some (if I may say so myself :P) quite good maps for Far Cry and the editor is very similar, I was thinking about making a Vietnam map, complete with dense jungles, rivers, helicopters, razed villages and hopefully napalm if I can find a way to fake it. You would play as a Vietkong soldier, of course.

its a nice touch for sure but a revolutionary step? i really dont think so. mixing some sandbox into the game does make things more interesting for sure. just like the cover system did for gears of war, every game has its specialty. whatever, i think people are getting way too defensive over this. the game might even be the best shooter made to date, i just dont think it is leaps and bounds above. its more like the next step down the same path as opposed to blazing its own new trail. when you have this huge flood of shooters constantly comming out, sometimes it takes more to reel you in. if i hadn't played many other shooters this year, i would probably be more excited.

I expected something like 12 hours at least myself. Although I guess that the replay value offsets the issue a bit.

I have to admit that it irks me a bit when people say that the game has nothing but graphics when there's really so much more to it. The sandbox approach coupled with environmental interactivity gives you so much to play and experiment with. It is a big deal. This is one game where the phrase "emergent gameplay" isn't just PR drivel, Crysis delivers it in spades. Did you play the demo? Anyone who has any interest in the genre should give it a shot, it's just incredible.

EDIT: Also, I don't think Gears of War's cover system is a correct comparison. The use of cover has been in games since forever. There are no games on the market right now that do what Crysis does in terms of environmental interactivity. In that sense, it is revolutionary. Especially considering that there's no doubt that this is the future of gaming.

Wow excellent review. I can't say I'm terribly surprised with the score because everything I've seen on the game up till now has been stunning and the level of interactivity within the game's environment is pretty incredible. Santa needs to bring me a PC to play this game on.

Its ok not like the theme but to say that FPS is in trouble because of the repeated themes is identical to saying that ALL games are in trouble for repeated themes and storylines. You are complaining about killing humans and aliens but you have yet to suggest something besides those two.

Also the level of interactivity in this game in unparralled. There is no other FPS that has real time lighting that affects not only the visual aspect but the gameplay. Also because of the interactivity the gameplay very different and dynamic incomparison to other FPS. As I have said, its ok not to be interested in the game but making claims that are blantantly inaccurate is rather silly.
