Hello all! Me and my 8 year old daughter spend time playing games on the weekend and in the evenings, mostly me playing and her watching. Her favorite games to watch are Tales of Zestiria, Dragon Quest Heroes and Fallout 4. Lately she has been wanting me to make her a profile on the PS4 so she can start playing. The problem arises because while she is very smart, I think most current RPG's with skill trees, and a lot of equipment management, would be to much all at once. I was wondering if their is something a bit more "simple" to get into the genre with. My first RPG's were Dragon Warrior 4 for NES, and Final Fantasy 2/4 for SNES, and they were just simple enough for me to get into the genre. Anyway thanks in advance for any input.

Try Chrono Trigger. It's very simple to understand for newcomers to the genre.

Probably the best 1st RPG is Pokemon. It's simple, but deep at the same time, it has a wide variety of creatures to use, so their are bound to be some that she'll like, the story is fun without been overwhelming, it's perfect for beginners.

Super Mario RPG or any of the Paper Mario games might be good for her.

A traditional Pokemon title would be my suggestion as Nintendo has maintained the original framework for that series of the decades and it remains high quality while easy to play.

Any Pokemon game...But IMO i think a game that would def. catch her would be Child of Light...The main character is a girl princess its very simple and the art style is very beautiful and colorful i think your daughter would like that.

Your options on the PS4 are quite limited.

If you've got access to other systems, I'd suggest games like Yokai Watch, Pokemon, or Ni No Kuni.

As for current gen system I think Nintendo has the best first RPG experience with Pokémon, Paper Mario and Mario&Luigi but on Sony consol, especially PS4 I would go with Final Fantasy 10 or 7 and you also have Child Of Light that is pretty and it has a princess as the main caracter ( as said earlier )

Omega Quintet is on the PS4 Store as a game you can probably play with your eight year old.

If you have access to a PS2 then there's plenty of RPG's you can get such as Breath of Fire, Wild Arms, Suikoden, Grandia.

World of Final Fantasy will be potentially a good game for the two of you.

Digimon Cyber Sleuth in March.

Kindom Hearts 2.8 is coming soon and that should be 10+ and it has stuff from disney.

Costume Quest would be good like the guy above said.

Honestly if you have two controllers, I suggest trine 2 as a fun thing to play together. It's 10+ so not quite at your daughter's age but nothing in it is too bad.

You only mention a PS4 so let me throw this out there, why not give Diablo 3 a shot?

The skill tree system has been simplified to a much more streamlined system, and you can map any attack to any button. It's two players so you can both play, and the best part: There is tons and tons of loot to collect!

Good lord, now I want to play it again.

Pillars of eternity. There is talking but most of it is reading. It's in the style of the older RPG's but can be run on even the shittiest of computers and will help to make them a more proficient reader. Or if you want a co-op experience try Divinity Original sin. It's a lot like pillars but more modern graphics harder to run but it's an amazing RPg for two people to get into. I believe it's on console now as well. other then those the whole of the final fantasy library should do.

Like most said, Pokemon is a great starter but if she likes Disney, Kingdom Hearts is even better! Great games, interesting story, easy to understand controls and level up system and makes great use of the Disney worlds. It's a mostly Sony rpg series so there's plenty to see. Pokemon has an edge over it with the cute animals but Nintendo was never reasonable with prices.

- Kingdom Hearts

- Pokemon

- Zelda

- Ni No Kuni

- World of Final Fantasy(The level of customization that it offers can potentially overwhelm an 8 year old, though)

- Child of Light

- Oceanhorn

Pokemon Gen 1 and Gen 2 in GBC so he/she can learn how to appreciate the game itself not on what console it is being played.

You're right. Pokemon is one of the best RPG games to start with for an 8 year old kid.

how about let your 8-year-old- daughter try the ff:

Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy 1/2

Pokemon Games for the GBC up to 3DS

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past/Minish Cap/ any other Zelda game

Crystal Story 2 (it's a flash game RPG)

Sword of Mana

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 1 and 2

Secret of Mana

Inotia 3: Children of Carnia (Available on Play Store or app store)

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones (this strategy-rpg game is not really that hard, in fact this is a simple game with pure strategy needed. It can also help your 8-year-old daughter to develop his tactical and leadership skills)

This. Also letting you 8 year old watch Fallout 4. Brilliant parenting there.
