Found this via Evil Avatar and Kotaku. In a recent OXM podcast Todd Howard, from Bethesda, states that the game will have over 200 endings, among other stuff.

-The game is twice bigger than what they thought in the beginning.

-Always just one humanoid-type companion, and another NPC like Dogmeat.

-Dogmeat can die, but they are working on his health and how you maintain him.

- Dogmeat can be given assignments, and will try to follow them with his Radiant AI.

-Brotherhood of Steel doing their own thing; already in finished state on the game; they are on the verge of extinction, you'll interact with them a lot more after a determined point in the game.

-The game is finished, but needs a lot more polishing and testing, they are doing many playthroughs; they keep adding stuff, sometimes it takes 100 hours to play, just the main quest takes about 20 hours.

-Absolutely tracking at fall 2008.

Listen to the podcast here.

200 endings? The hell?

EDIT: Read some stuff about it here.

200? No freakin' thanks. I have a hard enough time forcing myself to play through a game twice, much less 200 times. Unfortunately, I was never very interested in this game anyways. It looks cool, but I feel it'll be a little too overwhelming like Oblivion was.

If a game has 2 endings, one where you die and another where you dont, im happy.

Now lets try to make up 200 different endings.

1. You go home and eat bacon and eggs
2. You go home and drink tea
3. You go home and eat soup
4. You go to your friends place and...

I can imagine that there´s gonna be so little difference between them, that it makes it all rather meaningless

OR, its an error, and there are actually 20

Which is still too much

200?! O_O

20 hours to finish the story

200 endings

If someone is crazy enough to see every single ending then...

20 x 200 = 4000 hours of gameplay? >_>

what the hell?

If you think they are 200 completely unique endings worthy of a separate play through for each, you are way too gullible.

then only play it for the ending you want to see and trade it in. if you buy fallout 3 you arent "required" to watch all the endings.

I'm picturing "different" endings where the only visual difference is what armor and clothing your character happens to be wearing.

I'm pretty sure that most of the endings will have minor differeneces that most people won't even notice.

I would imagine that with 200 different endings most of those would be pretty minor variances on a few unique endings. Still though that's kind of cool in a "So what ending did you get in Fallout 3" discussion sort of way.

This game is looking and sounding very interesting though and I can't wait until the finished product gets released.

To me 200 endings just shows how many ways the player is able to play the game, though I must say it does seem a bit excessive, but if done right then the freedom will be nearly unparalled.

This is fantastic. It is like the old choose your own adventure books, and like Way of the Samurai. I can't wait to play this game. I realize the old school Fallout diehards are unhappy, but I like Bethesda. I like the cut of their jib.

It is stated it the podcast that its mostly minute alterations to the endings, dependend on what you do throughout the game, much like the origonal fallouts I guess those games also had an insane amount of endings if you counted all the different stories of the towns.

Very fallouty then ^^ Must admit that I do not see this as a true Fallout game, I do however recon that it is going to be an awesome game set in the same universe. Unlike BOS...

I hope they sorted alot of different things out with thier decision making, since I diddnt like Oblivion (as a rpg), but they do mentioned most of the things I diddnt like about that game, and according to them, adressed them.

200? Wow, that all but guarantees that I will feel ripped off by any of those endings. Hopefully one or two of them will actually be fleshed out and be satisfying.

I can't wait for Fallout 3. One of my most-wanted games of 2008, hands down.

It looks to have Elder Scrolls' depth, with better combat and set in a more interesting world than Oblivion. I'm sure the 200 endings are probably very similar though. Small differences.

I'm thinking the endings work out like this:

In the original Fallouts, the ending told you how your major decisions effected communities, towns and the world... so let's say you doomed one community, saved another and unleashed a plague on the world... that's one ending. Then if you saved the first community, doomed the second and cured the plague, that's another. Then if you doomed both communities and unleashed a plague that's yet a third...

So they probably have any number of endings for any given situations, mix and matching them gives you the 200 different endings.

Just like Bethesda's promise of a revolutionary new AI system with Radiant AI, I feel this is far too good to be true. The kind of variation between the endings will be so shallow that it will likely be somewhere in the 10-20 range in terms of actually "different" endings that have some actual differences that don't just change a single variable. Making a 20 hour story end in 200 completelydifferent ways is pretty much impossible from a writing standpoint.

smerlus

That's exactly what I was thinking. It reminds me in a way of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. If you saved so and so, it would show you a scene of what happened to them and then the next thing whether you did it or not would show you something different and so on and so on. It's just simple math at that point to see the different configurations which would get you to 200.

Don't be expecting Chrono Trigger type different endings. Small variations are the key in what we'll be seeing here.

200 endings is an interesting novelty, but I hope it doesn't take away from the games' writing and gameplay. I'm pretty much forgetting about those, and hoping to hear more about the gameplay very soon.

Sounds cool to me, but like most say it will be some sort of minor variables and not completly unique of each other, I suspect.

This also means that the endings will be short and crappy like many other games out there. Sorry, I like my long endings like MGS3. There's many good games but most of the endings in these games are not very satisfying IMO. Give me 1 long spectular ending instead of 200 short craptacular endings.

As mentioned, it's just going to be like Fallout and Fallout 2 where the end of the game consists of short clips from each town you visited, and depending on what quests you performed or how you performed them, the sound byte and picture is a little different. Ten towns and two endings per towns gives 100 endings right there, if my math serves me correctly (I'm sure it doesn't).

They should really just say that there will be 200 different variants of one ending, although even that is stretching it a bit.

Slide endings huh? Fallout 2 had around 40. You only had to play the game a three or four times to get them all. If they packed the game so full of content like they said it will probably won't take many plays to get them all. Eh I don't know how I feel about dogmeat being in the game. He was great in the first because of Mad Max armor having to be worn to get him on your side and I thought it was funny to see him in fallout 2 as an easter egg. I don't know.
