I think if it was a female Trevor type character it would be awesome.

so here is the thing.

the vast majority of video games are hyper violent, most of video game characters are hyper violent. most of the sterotypes by a large margin are of killing, millitary, abuse, anger etc.

injecting ONE character who is not any of those things is not the end of the world

Making GTA something it´s not is the end of the line for that game.

Sure GTA may survive if they alter the recipe, but there is a reason why a game sells 80mill copies and still years after launch sits at the top of every software sales list.

So some people may think hey it will be fine to alter the core concept, but look at Ubisoft and Assassins Creed, Syndicate was a fiasco and that was after they changed the concept. Of course, that is not including the fatigue from yearly releases.

like I said, making one character a woman who asks not to be slapped is not the end of the world.

get over it

But clearly they're catering to the sjw movement that foolishly insists there's a 50/50 male/female representation in everything.

I mean, we're talking about mob bosses and violent gang members here. How many real life female mob bosses have you heard of. And what percentage of the gang members are female?

That said, I agree - it's not the end of the world - if anything it's just a bit of laugh.

'clearly they are catering to the sjw movement'?

ok step back and think about what you are saying, 90% of all video game characters are violent, mean and almost always degrading toward women.

but you want to blow your stack over making ONE female video game character to not want to be slapped?

you have no perspective

what is it with this insisting on slapping women anyway? what is with the complete and total explosion of rage if someone says please sto slapping women. where that even come from?

They're making too much money from shark cards and GTA5 is still in the 10 games sold each money on Xbone/PS4. With Red Dead Redemption 2 coming out this year, it's not improbable, but lame that they're retreading old ground, just like Red Dead is.

The first GTA had playable female characters, so I don't see why they shouldn't revisit the idea.

your ability to focus on a point someone didn't make and create an argument about it that has got zero relevance to their post is truly impressive

It would be interesting to see a new take on Vice City and a possible female protagonist in the series, that said I'd wait until Rockstar makes an official announcement rather then believe rumors.

Yep same here.

But I don´t think Rockstar will go with a female lead, Houser has said on multiple occasions that while it´s not unlikely it will fit better in another game. So we may see a new IP like GTA with a female lead.

Really? Okay, I'm not sure what level of political correctness you're subscribing to but that's a pretty big claim!!!

but you want to blow your stack over making ONE female video game character to not want to be slapped?

I was talking about the prospect of having the lead character in the next gta being a female. NOWHERE did I say anything about being "slapped".

you have no perspective

lol wut???

"insisting on slapping women"? the ****?

"explosion of rage"? what? lol

The way I could see a female lead work is if a GTA game went with the same "modern day Gangsters" like they did in San Andreas. After all there are plenty of women in US Jails that are apart of a gang. But if the developers see it as unlikely for the series going forward then It's entirely up to them.

Though if we want to get real technically about it, the very first GTA game allowed you to pick a female character, even if it was just an image I'd say it counts.

2. slapped was for color. here is the thing, when I think of GTA I think of Trevors opening scene where he is having sex with a prostitute. and then I read how gamers are outraged at the idea of a female lead. paint that picture in your mind and try to understand how unbelievably absurd these concerns seem to others.

1. really? you want me to provide you with a complete sample of video games, parsed by how many of them have male lead roles and are violent? because you dont believe it to be true. do i have that right?

2. I am not engaging in a conversation where it is believed that there are some on the right who are outraged that developers are creating a female lead.

in fact, I think based on both 1 and 2 I am done with you, I am not playing your game. take it up with someone else your wasting my time

but here for your records 3% have female leads at e3

1. no just do what you said you'd do.

the original claim was

ok step back and think about what you are saying, 90% of all video game characters are violent, mean and almost always degrading toward women.

your examples of this vast majority of video game characters who are degrading to women was

GTA series (all of them), COD and Just Cause

those aren't characters you idiot.

2. this isn't a conversation. this thread is quite possibly a demonstration of someone's steady descent into madness.

i asked

point us to any responses in this thread that you'd class as "outraged."

you came back with

I am not engaging in a conversation where it is believed that there are some on the right who are outraged that developers are creating a female lead.

you are either some elaborate troll, like ken m from reddit who acts incredibly stupid, and oblivious to it, in an attempt to get bites, in which case congrats, mission accomplished. or you are an utter imbecile

Okay, I'll go through games in my steam library for the fun of it... and I'll focus on the "degrading toward women" part.

...

Well, in almost every game there's a good balance of male and female characters and nothing overtly sexist or "degrading towards women".

Well if you put a female lead in there might be sexism towards men put in. Now we don't want that do we?

Now, I'm not outraged at the prospect of a female lead, I'm just slightly suspicious that they're just trying to tick the equality box. Because at the end of the day I think a male protagonist is more realistic for a game like that but hey each to their own I guess!

before we jump to the last part lets just focus on the male lead role part and the violent part. there seems to be a lack of agreement even on that basic part

can we at least agree that this is much is true?

Now, I'm not outraged at the prospect of a female lead, I'm just slightly suspicious that they're just trying to tick the equality box. Because at the end of the day I think a male protagonist is more realistic for a game like that but hey each to their own I guess!

before we jump to the last part lets just focus on the male lead role part and the violent part. there seems to be a lack of agreement even on that basic part

can we at least agree that this is much is true?

Alright, I'll give you that. The vast majority of games are very violence-centric. As though every conflict is appropriately solved with killing and bloodshed - I can't deny that.

... And looking through my steam library again I notice that I seem to have a proclivity toward action-packed games - and yes it's a very male-dominated arena. Can't deny that either!

I only want them to go back to Vice City if it is also set in the 1980s again. That would be awesome! But Vice City in a modern setting would be lame.

Personally, the GTA setting that I want to see the most is a GTA game set in Las Vegas during the 1970s. This is the perfect setting for a GTA game in my opinion. It would have great music and could tell the story of the fall of the mob in Vegas. Plus, they can call it "Grand Theft Auto: Sin City" which is an awesome name for a game.

Hmm, a 1980 setting would be good fun, but i don´t think they would do that.

They would probably do a modern-day setting with the retro stations.

Okay, I'll go through games in my steam library for the fun of it... and I'll focus on the "degrading toward women" part.

...

Well, in almost every game there's a good balance of male and female characters and nothing overtly sexist or "degrading towards women".

really the only two things Anita Sarkeesian ever said. 1. mostly male leads 2. females fulfill a male sexual or power fantasy.

calling it 'degrading' on my part is subjective so I should not have used that word

Well okay but if there was a male version for "feminist" he could complain that all the males in these games are generally tall, handsome, young, ripped etc.

Sure, most female characters in games are pretty hot but that's life.

And once again, realistically speaking, the most popular video games are centered around action and violence - and these are areas where a male character is more believable.

EXACTLY..

and why not?

are men unrealistically attractive in video games? YES

is it a moral outrage to say so? no

what these radical feminists are saying is two things

1. Most video games have a male lead (yes we know this!)

2. Most video game female leads fullfil a male power and sexual fantasy (yes we know that too)

so what is the moral outrage here exactly?

the only thing I can see that is causing the outrage is not that what is spoken because what we already know it, but that a WOMAN said it

I think having one playable female character would be awesome. Maybe she could be a Mob boss's daughter who wants to avenge his death / has to fill in his shoes or a Columbian drug lord like Griselda Blanco. Switch it up a bit.

Well, I'm not a big fan of the fun police - whether they be male or female.

People getting offended over sexy or semi nude characters in games. C'mon! I want to escape my reality and get into a cool fantasy land. I don't need some politically correct do-gooder ruining freedom!

Really?

To be honest, I never followed the whole Anita Skar whatever her name is thing very closely. I mainly just heard people complaining about it on forums like this one.

But I never got the impression that she merely observed the status of modern gaming.

It sounded more like she (and people like her no doubt) were complaining and making value judgements - ie. using phrases like "degrading", "inappropriate" or "sexist".

... So it sounded like they were actively protesting and trying to put pressure on the game development companies to STOP all sorts of things - and I still think alot of what they were/are complaining about is perfectly fun and harmless.

yes...

really

which is the real shocker.

so the first time I had heard about this Anita Skar thing the FIRST thing I did was watch one of her videos.

not once did she suggest things should be a certain way, all she did was illustrate what we all already knew.

the first thing people should do on the topic of how outrageous Anita Skar is...is to watch her ^&*() video!

its like how people frame their entire life around being a christian but never bother to read the bible.

like so many things, the 'impression' you got is what OTHER people injected.

Hopefully the story is a lot better. I'm sorry, but the only good story GTA ever had was in San Andreas. Not even that much of a good story really, more like great characters. This game had terrible characters. Franklin was just meh. Trevor is the worst of the bunch because he's hideous and disgusting. I puke looking at him. Michael is boring and married to a dumb woman. Amanda is the dumbest character in the game. You really thought you would have a wonderful life with a yoga instructor that you had an affair with? You thought he was with you for love? I saw that he wanted money and sex from a mile away. I mean, he's a yoga instructor with a man bun... This is the point where some people get delusional about their looks and dating partners.

Overall game that I didn't care for at all. I saw snippets from my brother(s) playing it, but I had no interest in it outside of bullshitting around. The best character in my eyes is Franklin, mostly because he's the most attractive out of the bunch.

No. Trevor is hideous and disgusting. Why would anyone want a female version of him? Why would anyone want another version of him in general.
