It's aged far better than all of those games....the orange box which included HL2 got a 9.5 here. Disagreed to the max.Half-Life 2 was great at the time, but it's aged horribly in my opinion. I would give Game of the Decade to Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, or Resident Evil 4.

HL2 definitely deserves the award. It is one of the most finely crafted single player games I've ever played. It is paced so perfectly.rragnaarI would also give it to HL2, however I would think that most places would give it to WoW. It has really become a game that EVERYONE knows about and has defined the MMO genre for what people expect now.
Maybe it's because I never played the first Half-Life, but the plot of Half-Life 2 made no sense to me(why are the people in the masks killing everyone?!), and the weapon selection during my 3 or 4 hours playing it was horrible IMO(I get a crowbar and a pistol...k, where's my big guns? D'=), thus rendering the gameplay boring to me. It looked nice, sure, but I couldn't find anything else to like about the game...=/
You quit before the Gravity Gun? Disagreed to the max.Yes, The Orange Box got a 9.5, but included Half Life 2: Episodes 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2 (NEW? I don't remember), Portal (NEW), and Team Fortress 2 (NEW). And I don't mean the entire game did not age well, I just meant the AI. Halo: Combat Evolvedand Grand Theft Auto III are both still really fun games to play, and Resident Evil 4, just not as much. But Half-Life 2 does deservse GOTD, it was amazing back when it came out. Again, this is all my opinion.Half-Life 2 was great at the time, but it's aged horribly in my opinion. I would give Game of the Decade to Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, or Resident Evil 4.

I don't know how to answer, but I can understand how HL2 could get the award. The game is the most well-rounded game ever, puzzles, squad control, story, character depth, a scare factor, AI, and modding support. They made one of the most iconic video game characters, and he doesn't even say anything.
The Guardian has a videogame section?
I didn't fall in love with Half Life 2, but I didn't play it until the Orange Box X360, and its influence on other games is clear (especially the gravity gun) though it didn't change my extremely low opinion of silent heros.
Half-Life 2 deserves the reward. The reason is so simple not many people realise it. Source. HL2 gave us the Source engine and that in turn has given us: CSS, DoD:S,TF2,L4D,Portal,L4D2.

Well, that's not a good reason IMO, because the Unreal and technology from Id Tech are also widely used, probably even more so than Source. Only Valve uses Source, but almost every developer uses Unreal or technology from Id nowadays.
And I think I've heard from some people that Source is outdated now when compared to the Unreal Engine or the crazy things Id is doing, like that Rage game.

Except every game that uses source is actually good.
I never did get what all the fuss was for this game myself. Sure I thought it was a pretty good game when it came out and still think it's a pretty good game now but I just found other games to be more enjoyable. Anyway's I'm of the mindset that games have progressively gotten better so there'd be a bunch of more recent ones I'd pick for my GotD.
To be named in GOTD a game must be enjoyable throughout the whole, while HL2 an amazing game it doesn't deserve it due to the first half of the game being boring and not even as good as the rest of the game. I'd rather be it RE4 IMO.

So you don't think Bioshock, Batman Arkham Asylum, Borderlands, Gears of War, Mass Effect, or Modern Warfare 2 are good games? Not my choice. I preferred ep 1 actually. Still haven't gotten to ep 2. Either way I'd go with something else.

LOL! So was Rogue Warrior! :P
Ocarina of Time, so what if it was 11 years ago. I know its all opinions here but I wouldn't consider it above & beyond every other shooter ever made. I preferred Halo but that's my opinion, I don't think its an opinion to say Half Life 2 was leaps & bounds ahead of other shooters (Halo was made 3 years earlier, & included solid local multiplayer). I have yet to play an action adventure game as good as Ocarina of Time, graphics aside.
Na Halo:CE Was better:PMetroid Primeon Gamecube was best game this decade, but Half-Life 2 would have been my runner-up. PC version of course ;)

No chance, Halo really was overrated, Microsoft needed that positive press to sell their X-Box

Na i had bought and played both(MP at a later date) But anybody around that time knows that Halo:ce was a feat in gaming that even amazed most PC Hardcore PLayers when it came out a year later on the platform. (including me) Sure you can hate at the later Halos all you want(i wont defend them) But calling Halo:ce Overrated at the time really shows to me how little you know about the game and did not play it within a year it came out.HL2 definitely deserves the award. I agree, Valve and Half Life definately deserve this award, I mean who wouldn't love throwing a explosive barrel to a combine using the Gravity Gun.

ME!Deus Ex makes HL2 look like simple generic coridor shooter, while COD 1 + UO and Crysis make it look like an obsolete 90s shooter.
Gravity gun, nice, but it's Force Push/Push + Force Pull/Pull that's been around since Jedi Knights (1997) and the System Shock games.
