Shadow of the Colossus. Yes there were times when I was annoyed, there were obviouis flaws, and I've played "better" games. But the epic battles, majestic creatures, heavenly landscapes, enticing soundtrack, and the tugging poetry of the game was mind blowing. I will never play a game like that again.IronSalamanderThat game was surely epic and one of the best PS2 games ever.
hands down goldeneye, their are 5 close calls though because perfect dark timesplitters time splitters 2 and timesplitters 3 and quantum of solace wii almost down right matches it,
i tend to fluctuate between a handful of titles...
*super metroid
*metroid prime
*vagrant story
*Rez
*shadow of the colossus
if i'm being honest, the most joy i've felt from playing a game (video & computer games) was probably during my childhood, and not in the past ten years or so.
although since i've become more concious of what i've been playing i feel a new appreciation of computer & video games (CVG); an appreciation of aesthetics, level design, narrative, play mechanics etc. and as my tastes have matured and i've looked for new experiences, i have found that the games i've played in the last three to four years (check list above) are perhaps the best designed, most relevent and most playable console games ever. they are also my modern favourites.
if i had to pick one, i would pick super metroid. it's an incredibley well-balanced game that teaches you intuitively through the environment and not through dialogue or endless screens of information. there is something mesmerizing about the vertical/horizontal sidescrolling nature of the game, the way samus can become almost a vessel of energy and speed, breaking through walls and crashing into ceilings.
but it's also the transient and organic beauty of the game, not just the level design and mechanics. the aesthetic is complete; music and graphics are seamlessly intwined to create a living, breathing world. this level of artistic excellence is the same for all of the games in the list above, it is just that super metroid has me personally...there is just something about it that chimes with my individual mind and feelings to the extent that i will think about it constantly. it's the only thing seperating it from the others on the list. metroid prime is just as good, as are the others.
***as an aside, i might mention that although i said those games were some of the 'most playable', i'm sure some of you would critisize the controls of a few of those games and how difficult some of them are to get into (VS). so, okay, super mario world probably has the best 2D controls, and mario 64 and zelda 64 (+ their offspring) probably have the tightest 3D controls, but i don't think they challange the medium 'artistically' enough, which i think is very important.
