Not a bad idea in my opinion, they released games from every movie, but what if they would make an MMO, with a general story behind it.
You start of as a student in the first year on Hogwarts, or the other 2 schools ( can't remember their names).
When you become older you advance, you go to the second, third,... year. Throughout your career in school you have to make assignments, learn spells, do exams. When you graduate you can choose a job, you can open a shop, go work at the Ministry, for the paper, etc...
Just some rough ideas here, but I think they could make something cool out of that!

Every so often, someone mentions this as an idea and every time I say "YES! This needs to be done!" But alas.... I doubt it will be, and if it is, it will probably be poorly executed.

I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't already thought of this and are looking for ways it could work. I'm not a very big MMO fan but I would like to see them try it, there is already a Lord of the Rings and Star Trek MMO and DC Universe is coming out so why not? There probably is a lot of people that would like it.

Well yeah, I think it would be very popular, given that the Harry Potter franchise has a lot of fans.

When I first read the title to this, I can't lie I laughed something awful. But then I actually thought about it and my exact words were "My God at the possibilities......"

Meh, sounds like it'd be too limiting. Harry Potter works as a book, but I can't see it translating well into an MMO. That and everybody and their mom would flock to Gryffindor / Slytherin, leaving the other two pretty much empty.

Easily sorted by giving each house a perk based on Houses and a completely random sorting at the beginning so you don't get to choose your house.

Doesn't sound like a great idea. I guess it would be nice for Harry Potter fans.

It would be extremely dangerous for me so I hope they never make it. Because then I would never leave the house. :P And there are plenty of hardcore HP fans who want to be Hufflepuffs! My roommate is one, haha, and so is my mom, sister, and my best friend Matt. I am not one however. ROAR ROAR GRYFFINDOR! (I'm a nerd.)

You certainly are a nerd :P. I tested into Hufflepuff every time I took one of those quizzes. But yeah, I think the game would be a great idea if they can get it to work well enough.

I really like the idea but it would take a good developer to pull it off correctly...having such a magical world would require a lot of development time. I would definitely check it out though. Not to knock this too off topic..I would like to see more details on the Fallout MMO. :)

Hmmm... not quite right. If i recall correctly the creepy hat assigns a student to a house depending on their qualities, inclinations and morality. Making it random would not be faithful to the source material and would take the fun out of the game for people wanting to be in a certain house. I say: let each user play a 2-3 hours long preamble/tutorial taking place before going to Hogwarts (you know, Diagon Alley, the train station, on board the Hogwarts Express) and their house gets determined according to choices they made in this early portion of the game. This would avoid an overabundance of Griffindor players and keep the remaining three houses populated, while avoiding a frustrating random pick

Sounds very tempting to me. As long as the quality is high I would definitely give it a try, and probably end up playing it frequently. Btw I believe one of the other schools was Beauxbaton... or something like that, and I'm trying to remember the other one where Krum went.

YES you are totally a Hufflepuff! Hands down, no question. Hahaha. @tacticaldesire Krum went to Durmstrang. :) The French school was Beauxbatons, so you were very close, just missing the "s" ;)

I'm in.

The thing with great fantasy like this, the possibilities are endless. Any time, any characters.

With the peripherals out today, Move-Wiimote-Kinect, Quidditch could be a blast.

Or how about this - when you create how your character looks at whatever, you get to choose characteristics for your character that give them distinct benefits. For example, something like "Bravery" could award your character a +5% damage increase in dangerous situations, while something like "Mischievious" could give your character a greater chance of success in stealing items. Either way, based up on the multiple characteristics you chose, your character at the beginning of the game would go up to the sorting hat and that would determine what house you were in.

Someone already said it, but there would have to be perks to get people to select the houses. One thing they could also do is place different rewards that depend on what house you join, like gear, items, spells, weapons, etc. If they don't do that, then everybody is going to probably pick Gryffindor. I don't know too many people that would pick Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw... :P

The game could start off at the home where you live and it could be a type of tutorial mode and the levelling starts after you've boarded the Hogwarts express and entered Hogwarts.

I know this may sound like a terribly stupid idea, but they could have Quidditch be a type of PvP mode(winning Quidditch matches increases rep with your house/they could throw some item rewards in). Just throwing it out there... xD

The idea of a Harry Potter MMO is actually pretty interesting, I just don't think it's going to happen for one reason in particular: I don't know how the end game would work. What raids or bosses would there be? Voldemort? The Triwizard Tournament? Every PvE aspect I could think of negatively goes against the story in some way. PvP maybe, or maybe even a Harvest Moon type game where you build up your own life. PvE? No way.

Eventually, people that want to be in Gryffindor will find loopholes by doing the tutorial stage over and over and memorizing what choices to choose, so I don't know if that would help. Still not a bad idea though.

sounds like a great idea, ive always been a fan of HP any media and have felt the games didn't do the books justice, with only HP CoS being decent and maybe PoA too. im so disappointed by DHp1 i want to get it but with all the review sites giving it below 5/10 has turned me off it.

And for endgame, there are some PvP options but also, you can base the end game on the job you choose after your school career.

Yeah, that's inevitable (I would work around it myself). Then again, if one wants to be in a specific house he has the right to.

I agree, I don't want it to be too childish, it has to be challenging, with a somewhat dark background.

Ok, but then how many of HP fans are gamers? How many of them play PC games? How many of them can afford ( if it is ) a suscription fee for a HP game? I really like the idea if it is promoted properly :D

It could make a good MMO, but I think it would be a better idea for an open-world RPG, like Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

YES. It would definitely work if it was a single player RPG type game, like Fallout 3. That would be AWESOME. I'd definitely buy it!

Surprisingly, quite a few of them are. And quite a few do play PC games. I happen to be one of them. And of course they are going to pay for a subscription fee because like that other guy said, it's Harry Freakin' Potter...what HP fan wouldn't?

It would have to walk a line though, or it wouldn't be HP. That's part of the appeal, I think--the series tackles serious issues while still maintaining an air of whimsy and playfulness. Too serious wouldn't be right, and neither would too lighthearted.

Also, Harry Freakin Potter? Watch this, skip to 7:09. ;)

Lol, that's what I was referencing!!! XD Gotta love those musicals- they capture the essence that you described of the HP series perfectly.
