I was of the same mindset about 4 months ago. I found that, unlike other recent years, I have purchased very few games and had gotten excited about the release of even less! It may not have been a coincidence though that the amount of time I have spent reading about and following games prior to their release has dropped significantly this year due to real-life commitments. Now that I've taken some times, played through Deus Ex: Human Revelations (a game a had little expectations for but pleasantly surprised me,) and have looked forward to games like Batman: Arkham City, Assassins Creed Revelations and MW3, I've got to say that 2011 isn't looking as bad as I first thought.... :)
Not even close. The last bad year I've seen was the mid-90's when there was a glut of me-too FPS (PC) and fighting games(consoles); that time period between the SNES and PSX. Sure there was the 3DO (and Atari Jaguar) which I liked. But, the list of great games for it was tiny.
The only one that matters :P I'm still on the fence about War In The North; I doubt I'll get it.
But other than a few other games, there hasn't been a lot that has intrested me this year. So full of shooters and very liitle else, so yeah I'd say it has not been very good.
Well, many games that have been in development for many years (or ones that have been garnering much hype) finally came out in 2011. eg. Rage, LA Noire, Deus Ex, The Witcher 2, Skyrim,
I didn't find L.A. Noire to be dissapointing at all. I think it has a very high chance of being game of the year actually. And this year is great. We've got L.A. Noire, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Witcher 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Modern Warfare 3, inFamous 2, Resistance 3, etc. Little something for everyone.
The problem these days is that no games really push the boundaries. Look at a game like Tony Hawks pro skater 2. You could tell that alot of time and effort went in to the game. There was even a cheat to make your character fly. The game was fun, impressive and something new. These days we have games like gears 3 and call of duty. Sure they're good games and everything, but they just feel like updates of previous installments. Even La Noire stank of a game that could have been better.
Hmm... yes, it's been a pretty bad year. I mean, we've only had: Killzone 3 LBP 2 Pokemon Black/White The Witcher 2 Ghost Trick Dead Space 2 Mortal Kombat Portal 2 LA Noire Bulletstorm Disgaea 4 Dragon Age II Professor Layton and the Last Specter Outland Marvel vs Capcom 3 Infamous 2 Motorstorm: Apocalypse Dirt 3 Kirby: Mass Attack Crysis 2 Dead Island Shogun 2: Total War Radiant Historia Frozen Synapse Resistance 3 Catherine El Shaddai Shadows of the Damned Gears of War 3 Xenoblade Chronicles Dark Souls Bastion Rage Forza 4 AND the best game of the gen, Deus Ex: HR. That list is ignoring remakes and ports (Zelda 3D, Starfox 3D, GoW Collection, ICO Collection, Halo Remake) Also ignoring games that came out originally in former years, but now are available on more systems (Mass Effect 2 PS3, Crysis consoles, LIMBO) And then we're still waiting on: Skyrim Uncharted 3 Batman: AC Super Mario Land 3D Skyward Sword Kirby Wii Battlefield 3 CoD: MW3 Assassin's Creed: Revelations So yeah, I'd say it's been pretty dry this year. ARE YOU INSANE, OP? What the hell are you waiting for????
2011 started slow, but is finishing off very well ( Skyrim...cough...cough!). Also, there are alot of good games coming early 2012 that make 2011 seem a little weak on the AAA list. But I woudn't say it was that bad a year for gaming.
I wouldn't say so. Like every year there's been a pile of generic, uninteresting, or dissapointing games, but there have also been quite a few gems (ex. Bastion, Terraria, Catherine, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky). There's also some good recently released games and soon to be released games. (ex. Dark Souls, Skyrim).
