It depends on what model of ps3 you have. I know that SOME are backwards compatable but not all.

You can also download some old games off of PSN.

I've a 60GB PS3 and all my PS2 games play just fine, I've only one PSone game that doesn't play at all (keeps freezing at start of game), that's Return Fire, but my other PS1 games play just fine. Anyhow, they've a decent selection of PS1 games on PSN, though not nearly enough of the games I wish to play. Anyhow, I see on Amazon you can buy new 60GB PS3s for like $700 new, used for around $300, or the 20 GB models for $250 used, these have pretty much full BC, suggest buying one and updating the HDD to a larger one. If you got a 20GB for $250 and pay like $50 to get a 500GB HDD... might have to pay for additional component or HDMI cables though (you can get HDMI cables for like $5 from Fry's)... and if you're really into BC gaming like me you'd be willing to pay for additional PS3 repairs if needed, keep that in mind. Luckily I've not needed this yet. EDIT: oh, I think all PS3s can play PS1 games, just not all play PS2 games. I think you can check your PS3 serial number to see if it's BC by checking it on the Sony website (somewhere). First off, do you have a phat PS3? Only the phats have BC (but not all phats), PS3 Slims do not have PS2 BC.

I own a Phat ps3, and like you I love BC. Thanks for the info, I just didnt want to risk damaging a disc that may not work.

oops, sorry, way too much info on my part, but yeah you should be able to put the PS1 discs and PS2 discs in the PS3 just fine without a problem, though if they don't work then maybe you have to download some BC patch off PSN (through the PS Store), I've never needed to download it myself but I think it's needed for the 80GB models that use emulation
