And i usually hang with my friends atleast 4 hours a day. How can i convince my mom, that im not addicted? I get good grades have lots of friends. But i just enjoy gaming.

It's really like anything else; as long as you're working hard in life and are concentrating on your studies, finding a career, etc, then it doesn't matter how you like to unwind. Nothing wrong with that.

Change the media she watches to anything that isn't owner by Rupert Murdoch (Fox, Sky News, Sun etc etc.) if thats what media shes basing it of.

Sit down and make her watch something like Uncharted and ask her if she see's any diffrence between it and a movie.

Start calling her addicted for every daily routine she has. Does she drink coffee every morning? call her an addict and keep repeating it every time you get the chance. Does she watch TV everyday? listen to the radio while on her way to work? Act like you are legitimately concerned about her "addiction" to annoy her even more. Also, mention it other people when you are around people she knows, like family friends, that will really get her.

For extra lulz quote stuff like the bible or tell her that a priest told you her "addiction" is a sin.

gaming isnt the devil its not out to get you (though some fools think it is.. mainly the idiots who actually believed the late jack thompson)

Record her watching tv for 2 or 3 hours a night after dinner, or reading, or whatever it is she does to pass the time. Then hold an intervention for her and show the video. When she objects, tell her it's the same way with games.

Isn't asking for advise on how to continue doing something the wrong argument against an addiction?

She just wants you to unplug and get outside. She's a mom and wants better things for you. If she really wanted you to quit playing, then she would just take your games away. After all, she is the boss.

Just got to show her that you can do other things, give it some time and she will see that you are capable of putting down the controller and she shouldn't worry.

Every parent's worry is/should be, if they are raising a good person. Show her that she is.

First, tell her to stop watching Fox News. Then show her the news report ( forgot which network it was ) about the Russian Airport Bombing. It said that video games are used to train terrorists. Any person would half a brain would dismiss that as complete idiocy.

So i guess that will convince your mom that the media is really overreacting about video games. They're not half as bad as the media says it is. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion so...

Then again the "the liberal view should be the only view or we attack" networks are not any better.

To the TC, do what the video games should have taught you. You must control you emotions and think through the problem. First off the there is a logic fallacy in the argument that video game make people more violent. It is a faulty cause and effect.

You should get her to play games. Pick carefully. You need on that her how much thinking there is in games and keep her from leaving by just seeing some things. Then every time she die/fails, you should tell her "Calm down, You need to think and be less aggressive."

It is funny you think of what addicts are and compare that to those gold medals in the Olympics.

Bad idea... if his mom is anything like my mom, she'll just believe it.

Anyway, I know how you must be feeling right now - my parents were the same way (they used to limit me to 45 minutes per week). Anyway, just wait until your older when you will be able to completely bypass your parents. Believe me, once you're 18 you can pretty much ignore them.

I think the best advice that has been given thus far is to force her to put things into perspective. Many people who make claims of other being addicted are also ones who get home from work and do nothing but watch TV all night until they go to bed.

I would take it one step further and don't bring it up for a week. But in that week document how many hours of TV she watched or spent in front of a computer. Heck you could do that for every person in the house to give yourself a good statistical base. Obviously you can't monitor every ones viewing habits all the time, so you could just say It's for a school project. So by default if she thinks 2 hours of video games a day is considered an addiction, then so is 14+ hours of TV a week.

The beauty of this is It's a two-pronged approach. First, It forces them to take a new viewpoint on it. They were the ones who openly and admittedly told you how many hours of TV they are watching. So they cannot deny it. Two, it indirectly shows you are perfectly capable of investing time into things other than video games. Which kind of crushes the addiction claim in the first place. :)

Talk to her about it. Obviously her view is a bit warped, for whatever reason. I had the same issues when I was growing up, although you'd think parents of today would have some videogame experience and understand that it's no different than watching TV or the like. Maybe you can get her to lay off the restrictions if you agree to balance it with something else - exercise, cooking, whatever.

Just start asking her for money to go out and do things. If she says yes, you get money. If no, she can't complain that you play games for more than an hour. Win-win

Play some causual games with her like on the DS or Wi or maybe even Kinect i that are fun and you could use it as like a time for family fun and having a great time. This would convince her that games are for everyone and that they aren't a bad thing.

tell your mom you got a girl pregnant but she got an abortion but you're still sexually active with her and that you're worried about getting her pregnant again with all that free time you have not playing your video games, maybe she'll buy you all the video games you'll need if it'll keep you glued to the TV until you're 18

Ask your mom what she sees in you that leads her to believe you are addicted. She might have some interesting insights, and she might not. Ask her which activities she would like to see you doing more often, instead of gaming. It could be that you've tapered off on some of the creative things you used to do. I certainly spend less time writing, painting, and playing piano when I am gaga over a game (Monster Hunter Tri swallowed 80 hours of my life over an embarrassingly brief window of time, I had a lot of fun, but dang, man). Anyway, maybe your mom is somewhat right, and this is just her way of helping you find a bit more balance and possibly even more fun/fulfillment in your life.

I have a similar problem. but not with my mum, with mu girlfriend...

When im sitting on the forum, or have a gaming time for 1 hour or 2 she flip's

She wants me to focus more on book's, classical films, classical music, she don't like me listening to rock or metal, she actually told me that if I ever buy a single game again she will leave me?!

I barly play anymore beacuse of her atm, before i played maybe 2 hours 2-3 time a day, when I had my own time, but instead she got angry about that, that im not open minded, and I will be like the comic guy in simpsons.....

Why can't a hard working man do what he enjoys without to be call that your a child for playing a game consols?

Don't what to do tbh...

You could always resort to "there are worse things I could do," but here are five positive approaches:

1. Gaming is interactive, vs. the passive activity of watching TV, so it's definitely better than doing that. And, if you play on-line gaming (Xbox Live, MMORGs, even - ugh - Facebook), then the gaming you do is actually social, not antisocial. You are interacting with your friends in the way teenagers have for decades (yacking on the phone), but gaming also involves cooperative and/or competitive play. If all your friends are online, and you aren't, then you will lose out on important social time with them. And good social skills are important.

2. Gaming promotes skill sets that are useful and highly desired by employers. You can Google some scientific articles that show this to be true. RPGs, strategy games, etc. exercise your analytical (puzzle-solving), critical thinking and organizational skills, etc. FPSs enhance hand-eye coordination and observational skills. Some games require focus and long attention spans. The careers open to this generation of kids will be by and large technology-based, so you need to be saavy with computers. Gaming helps.

3. Crime has gone down in the US in the last 3 decades, exactly corresponding to the RISE in gaming. I'm not saying there's a correlation, but if gaming caused kids to become criminals, wouldn't there be an observable INCREASE in crime among the gamer set? Every generation of parents thinks that what their kids are interested in is going to destroy civilization. They said it about rock'n'roll. Back in the day when kids played D&D with nothing but a group of nerdy friends, a pair of dice, and their imaginations, the media was saying the same thing about that.

4. Remind her that the most important thing that will save you from becoming a social liabilityis concerned adults taking an interest in your life, so thank your mom for her concern and tell her you appreciate it! Give her a hug and reassure her that you're going to turn out okay. Moms worry about those things, so do that often.

5. Talk to her about what's going on in your life besides gaming, but including gaming. Show her games you think she might like based on her interests. Talk to her about which games you like and which ones have disappointed you and - especially - why, so she sees you can evaluate games wisely. Tell her your plans for making more goldwhich shows you have a grasp of economics. Tell her how another game has used Greek mythology or some period in history which you're studying in school. If you pay your dues, so to speak, by communicating with her once in a while, she will likely relax and back off because she'll see the benefits of gaming in your life.

Explain that the same experiments that have demonstrated negative consequences of gaming have also demonstrated that movies and tv are even worse. My bet is she watches movies and tv. I'm a psychology major by the way. I've read the research articles first hand, so my info comes straight from the source not the biased media sources. Yes, gaming increases aggression. But it's not as bad as the media makes it out to be. And movies and tv produce a larger correlation. So if she's getting after you for games, and then sitting in front of the television set for an equivalent period of time. Then she's a hypocrite.

Attacking a fallacy with a second fallacy makes your argument implode.

On a more serious note, when i was growing up my parents set the rules, and I was to abide by them. Questioning rules, or trying to explain why they should be changed was usually met with "my house, my rules."

The point is, not all kids have the wiggle room to enact changes on their own environment. As such, just accepting the situation is the best they can do for themselves, because harping on the issue will more likely result in getting smacked than actually changing anything.

Tropictrain

LOL when I was a kid, I called my step-mom a hypocrite once. About 2 seconds later, I was picking myself up off the floor, with the imprint of her hand across my face.

The fact that the media has time to mention video games with all the other stuff going on in the world is proof enough that they're fairly useless.

Good for weather though;

Not to be a party-pooper, but your thread title lacks pronoun antecedent agreement. Anyhow, just because you have a hobby that you enjoy a lot doesn't mean you're addicted. Let your mother know that it is simply a fun activity for you and say that though you understand her concern, she is worrying about nothing.

Not to mention the capitalization error, the mission apostrophe and the improper ending punctuation...
