I personally think they should be left out. I've had a lot of games that I have collected all the trophies for except the online ones and it stops me from getting the platinum. Its very frustrating. Also not everyone has internet connection for their consoles so why annoy people more by including online trophies that they can never achieve.

I dislike them for several reasons.

  1. Achievement hogs
  2. People judging others by their achievements
  3. Instead of encouraging gamers to come up with their own goals, the game sets the goals for you
  4. The pop up they make when you unlock them

I personally like the achievement and trophy aspects to gaming. They are there in an attempt to add longevity to the title and perhaps make you try things you otherwise normally wouldn't.

They're kind of annoying. I do agree that they are unfair to those that don't have an internet connection. You know, I think a really good idea would be to enable online trophies/achievements as "add-ons." For example, Call of Duty: World at War has trophies (using PS3 as my example) from the DLC Nazi Zombie maps that you don't have to earn to get a Platinum Trophy (which is a good thing, because I was able to get it). An example of a game with online trophies is Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. You have to earn them to get the Platinum. One of the trophies requires you to get to the multiplayer cap level in the game, and I don't want to spend hours and hours doing that! I don't think online trophies should be taken out, but they should not count towards your trophy/achievement count. Another idea would be to make separate categories (one for campaign, one for multiplayer, etc). I know none of these things are going to happen any time soon, but I think it would be a good idea to implement them for the benefit of the whole gaming community in the future.

I like them. Give extra replay value and challenges. But I would be fine without them.

I like trophies/achievements for the single player portion of the game but online ones just piss me off because most of them require you to grind to get them.

I love trophies, but now that I'm Level 12, I think it's the perfect level and basically strive to keep it that way.

I don't know about the PS3 but the 360 can disable the popup, I did it and then found I missed the little sound. Can be found in system settings in 360, again don't know about the PS3.

For the most part I'm indifferent toward them, with the exception to trophies only earnable online. When well created they can add replay value by getting people to explore game mechanics more or increase the amount of stuff to be collected. When poorly made they're just add tedium to a game. When online they usually result in people doing stupid things that are detrimental to team play.

I usually replay games several times to explore gameplay mechanics anyway, so trophies good trophies are of little concern to me, and I ignore poorly designed trophies.

They can be cool in the fact that encourage challenges that you wouldn't normally go after, but they're also a waste in the fact that they make people play games they'd have absolutely no interest in. (looking at you, spaz :P )

I love achievements/trophies, one of the best new things to have come out this gen. I can somewhat understand why some people may not like the online ones but they are also there to reward players who spend a lot of time playing the games online so I don't mind them myself.

I think mp trophies should be proportional – for example, if your game is 70% sp and 30% mp, then no more than 30% of the trophies should be mp. And the smaller the mp percentage is, the less effort should be required to get the trophy. If a high percentage of a game is mp, then it is perfectly fair to have lots of mp trophies with hardcore time/effort requirements.

When I see a lot of time intensive mp trophies in games that are sp focused (e.g. Assassin's Creed Bro) I do get annoyed. But at the same time, I am also sort of annoyed that a game like COD:BO doesn't have more mp trophies. It seems like that game is out of whack the opposite way since the focus of its gameplay is mp but the focus of its trophies is sp. So I guess I really don't mind mp trophies, I just get annoyed when I feel like the trophies in a game (whether they are mp or sp) don't match up with the gameplay in the game.

I am not talking about trophies/achievements in general. That is a completely different arguement for a different time. I am talking specifically about trophies that are only earnable online. Some people collect lots of trophies only to realise that half of them are only earnable online and then they can't get them. Its kind of unfair to the people who want to get them but can't

Wow. So many posters not reading the OP, just the thread title.

Online achievements/trophies are terrible and shouldn't exist except for games focused on online, like L4D and Halo. Not everyone is willing to pay for Live Gold, or doesn't have a great internet connection.

RDR is a great example of bad trophies/achievements. At least half are just for online. I love the game and would have loved to try to 'platinum' it, but the online sucks and just isn't worth it to try to get them.

Reminds me of the 'High Score' type a systems from arcades and other type a games.

There's nothing wrong with achievements, to be honest.

I like them, but also have a negative view on them. It gives me motivation to go a little deeper into the world of the game.

Though I do wish that some games had a lot more so I can feel that the game is even bigger than it may truly be. The counter to this is now finding motivation to play games without them.

Depends on the requirements for the trophy. Online trophies in general are ok. Online modes are part of the game and so there are awards for them. But they shouldn't be to dependant on the community.

In BlazBlue for example we have a trophy that requires three consecutive victories in ranked matches. That's just too hard for many people and therefor a trophy that I don't like.

BC2 on the contrary has online trophies that I find reasonable. Destroying a helicopter with a stationary rocket launcher or drilling a hole into an opponents head with the repair tool are challenging but achievable even for sub-par players.

I don't dislike achievements, but I do feel they could be better. The approach that steam took to making the achievements more of a statistic of everything you do is a better way of doing it.

I don't mind online trophies in general, but a lot of developers have to screw it up by setting insanely high amounts of exp or whatever you have to accumulate. Get all the offline trophies in 30 hours, take 200 hours to build up enough online points for the platinum. In a game that's mainly single player with a fairly mediocre online component that even the biggest fans of the game would be sick of in 50 hours.

That's ridiculous.

As long as there's a balance in the online achievements then it's fine. If there are some achievements that require long-term play or someone to be very skillful there's nothing wrong with that either. Not everybody can get every achievement and that's ok.

It ads a HUUUGE new part of the game.

RE5 was my first PS3 game, i finished the campaign in 8 hours and never played it again.

But along time later i decided to look trough the RE5 trophies, and i suddenly decided to play it again. Now i have all the weapons in the game, and many of them with infinite ammo. I used a few hours on trying to get that trophy, and hell... it was worth it! :D

They're fine But people took them the wrong way and become trophy-thirsty maniacs, forcing you to do something you DONT want to do (10K kills on Resistance2),or making you dont care about other modes (completing HardCore mode in Ratchet ACIT)

At the moment, I don't really like the online Trophies.

I have been trying to get the Platinum for GTA IV, and am stuck trying to find a R* dev to kill for one trophy.

Not too impressed, but that's the down side to getting games years after release.

They should not be included for the Platinum, but I think they should be in there.

I don't like online achievement/trophies because the longer you wait the more difficult they are to get usually. I went online the other night because I still need to get the achievements for playing interceptor online in the new Hot Pursuit and I couldn't find anyone to play with.

As a whole I like achievements. They give a bit more incentive to play a game again, or to try playing the game a different way than you may otherwise. It's a meta game for video games that lets you feel like you really got your monies worth.

However I generally dislike most online achievements. Mostly because people are so obsessed with getting the achievements they cost the entire team the match. On top of that, as soon as they get the online achievements they tend to dump the game entirely. So it's not as if they are contributing to that games community in any positive way at all.

Onilne achievements are fine providing they actually encourage you to PLAY the game. As opposed to ignoring the game in order to get said achievements.

I can't speak for any PS3 game as I don't own one. But the online achievements in Halo 3 got really absurd as more map packs came out with stranger and stranger online achievements. Gears of War 2 and Bioshock 2 also have a few that are nigh impossible or would require playing for an uncalled for amount of time IIRC. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 also had some silly ones that you could never get unless you randomly got that 1 in a million chance during a game. Don't even get me started on the laughable achievements for the versus mode in Resident Evil 5.

I haven't seen the trophies for the others, but if the acheivements for 360/PS3 version of RE5 and Bioshock 2 are the same... you really didn't have to go out of your way, in RE5 it incouraged you to try harder i.e. "Get 100,000 points" in Team Versus or "Reach Level 40" in BS2, not to be rude, but how do you consider those examples going against the team and such?

Some of the latter not in so much of going against the nature of the game as opposed to just asking too much of the player. Sorry for not being clearer, I kinda mashed two different gripes into one post.

But one for RE5 I was thinking of specifically was getting X number of kills against another player with melee attacks. Now I didn't play RE5 versus much (because it wasn't very good) but trying for melee kills against another player as opposed to shooting them in the face from a safe distance was typically suicide.

So I would extend the idea to any achievements that would force you to play a counter-productive strategy that no one in their right mind would ever try if it wasn't an achievement. Which I'm aware it a bit of a gray area. Which is why I prefer any online achievement to not relate directly to gameplay at all. Maybe It's just me, but I would much rather see an achievement that says "Reach level 100 in online ranked matches" over something like "Kill 50 opponents in an online ranked match with a sniper rifle without using the scope."

I am on the fence about it as long as the online trophies are reasonable. Some are too hard or take forever (looking at you 10k kills in Resistance 2) But what really annoys me is Uncharted 2, I had the plat, had played the online to death for fun, and I mean to death, then they release online trophies afterwards? Screw you Naughty Dog....
