are you the kind that plays only RPGs, or only FPSs? or do you play a variety of genres?

do you like to play all the latest games, or are you a so-called 'retro' gamer? perhaps a mix of old and new?

anybody play just nintendo, just sega or only on live arcade etc. etc.? or do you have multiple consoles?

do you try to play or buy all (high rated) games for a system, or maybe only 'the best'?

i used to play RPGs solidly, but now i like to play a variety of games on different consoles and on my PC. i haven't got a lot of money so i try to play the 'definitive' titles first. i don't really play games 'just for fun'...when time and money come into account, i need to play the best and regardless of genre.

i tend to play and keep older games. you can always discover a new way of appreciating something as deep as say, super metroid. i don't think it's necessarily nostalgia, i just prefer the feel and design of some older games. i don't get all teary-eyed and say stuff like 'they don't make em' like they used to', but i would say older games are unique and feel unique because they were designed on older systems a long time ago. new games are unique too, but it's nice to have a balance of styles.

i also try to always keep track of the games that are called 'sleeper hits' or 'under-rated'. i foster a collection of little gameplay experiments.

Whatever I find fun. There aren't too many genres I don't like.

I like a variety. I like to play good story-driven RPGs, fast racing games, and even the wrestling games. Collections of old Genesis and SNES games are always a hit with me.

Games are a bit like an alternative movie to me. I don't play cutie crap like Spore and Little Big Planet, but I respect those games for what they are and find they keep girls entertained for a while. I want to play a game with a story, a beginning and an end. This is often RPG's, FPS or 3rd perpective action adventures, the last being my favorite.

I'm looking for the next thrill, I don't play retro, I like graphics and I want to be impressed. I want to see games evolve, I like violence, I like drama, I like a bit of raunch. I don't want the games industry to be held back, I want it to have the freedom that movies get, if not more.

I often play with an audience. I have a games room which has 2 Pc's, 2 wall mounted 34 inch TV's plugged into Playstation 3, X-box 360 and Wii, plus all with broadband connection. When I have visitors who share the same interest, they are often playing something on the PC while I dabble about on some high action impressive skill based game. Quite often they don't mind this, since most my friends prefer RPG's and PC games, they admire games like Dead Space on the PS3 but wouldn't play it themselves.

I don't feel like I have time for retro, i've introduced a lot of people into gaming through my life and i've learned a different perspective into it that I find hard to explain. You see, if I wanted to show a friend what Final Fantasy is all about because they don't understand the big deal, a Final Fantasy Fanboy will run up and say "Final Fantasy 6 is the best!" while spitting out drool all over the place. But if I was to boot up Final Fantasy 6, my friend would be like "What's this crap" and the 2d sprites wander about along with the text that neither of us can be bothered to read. However, I boot up Final Fantasy 10, with it's fantastic blitz ball intro, the funky music and dramatic stroy telling and Auron's awesome narrative voice, I got there attention.

I play Contra and my dad walks in the room. "Hi dad" I say. He won't even glance at what silly game i'm playing, he doesn't care it's an arcade classic. I play Gears of War, my dad walks in, his words where "Wow come look at this Jen!" as he calls for my mum to take a look at the game, having not been aware how games have come on over the years.

Have I gone off the subject? So anyway, to sum it up, when it comes to games i'm a bit of a thrill seeker cross junkie: always looking for the next fix.

i play every genre, and i normally play 2-3 games at once.

Whenever a new pokemon comes out (d/p/etc) i normally play that for like 2 years straight. :)

I play games from pretty much every genre except for JRPG and wargames (the board games type), though I do want to get into wargames some day. I play old games, newer 2D games, indie games, a lot of obscure stuff in general, and I also play mainstream games a decent amount. I value creativity, orginality, innovation, challenge, depth, complexity and simplicity (if varied and well-done).

The only "constant" gaming habit that I have is that I'm always playing some kind of shoot 'em up (games like Ikaruga, Gradius, etc.). It's the one genre that I never get tired of. The genre is really deep and challenging, and it contains a ton of really awesome and varied games, and each of them has unlimited replay value. It's one of the rare genres that when you beat a game, you know that you still suck at it and need to play it more to get better scores, play its second loop, etc.

while it's good to see that you have an opinion, i can't understand why you'd call spore and little big planet, 'cutie crap'. but you respect spore and little big planet for what they are ('cutie crap' that keeps the girls entertained). is it only girls that are entertained by those games?

i have a friend a little bit like you. at least you're a little more open-minded and have a wii (is that reserved only for the girls you entertain, and you mum?). my friend has an xbox360 and ps3 with a hdtv and plays the latest games. he would kind of laugh now at games with older graphics than the first xbox.

you say you want to see games evolve, but surely you are hampering your perspective if you look only to the future? it's not like graphics in the 2D generation are any worse than graphics in the 3D generation. final fantasy 6 for example is, graphically, the 2D equivalent to final fantasy 12; i think it looks superb still. the characters are a little blocky but the backgrounds and monsters still look awesome. and games aren't just there to show off to people. you can play those older games when your friends aren't round.

I like a bit of variety, old and new games. I have racers, extreme-sports, sports, platformers, rpgs, fps's, adventure, rhythm, arcade I like it all. But the majority of my games consist of RPGs and FPS's as they are my favourite genres.

Ok for a start, since it might look like i'm having a bit of a debate here and as soon as someone starts a debate the other guy tries to point out spelling mistakes in order to get some leverage. I am aware I may have spelling mistakes, my English is bad and I can't be assed to use the spell checker.

I loved Fallout and Fallout 2 when they came out, And I love Fallout 3 now. But I won't go back and play Fallout 2. It's old, it's dated, leave it for the retro gamers. I played it when it was in it's prime and got my fun out of it. Now i'm ready for Fallout 3, the next thing, I don't want more Fallout 2, I don't want the same game with the same engine and prensentation, bored of it, need a new fix.

Does that put it into perpective for you?

I been through this about 3 times in this forum already, it's trendy to say you like retro games and feel like your all buddies with the indie developers, but don't get me confused with one of those guys. I never played Persona - Fes for the Playstation 2, I heard it's a good RPG game, but it won't entertain me because i've played games like it so many times now i'm bored of it! I've done the text scroller, still anime character comic storyline games a squillion times before, i'm bored of it! It won't entertain me anymore. Give me the sequal, Persona 5 or whatever it is, bring it on a current generation consel and put some proper effort into it, otherwise i'd rather be studying or doing something productive, or sleeping!

The differcultly of putting my view across is I will now get some moron who takes what I say to the extreme and think I won't play anything unless it's state of the art. I'm a bit broader then that. Let's just say I enjoyed No More Heroes and I consider it a modern game. It had character, style, dialog where needed and a fun game to tie it together. That'll speak for itself I hope.

As for the Wii, yes it's for girls, nephews and neices who come around. I havn't touched that thing since I completed No More Heroes and Metroid Corruption. And yeah Spore and Little Big Planet is cutey crap and I won't touch it with yours.

I usually play action-adventure, real-time RPG, sandbox (GTA type), platformer, and NBA based game. I only play 1 story-based game at a time together with NBA game. I don't play another game until I beat the game I'm currently playing. I want games to last at least 1-2 weeks (depends on how long it is).

And it depends on the genre or type of game on how I play it.

Sandbox (GTA type) - 2-3 missions a day

Short action-adventure - 2 savepoints a day

Long action-adventure and RPG - 3-4 savepoints a day

Shadow of the Colossus - 1 colossus a day since there are only 16

Star Wars TFU - 1 mission a day since the game is too short

I try to play as many types of games on as many systems as possible. You're limiting your options and missing out on some great games if you don't. If I was forced to pick a genre I'd pick action, but really I try not to limit myself to anything.

How do I play games? Generally in front of my television with my kids doing whatever they can to disrupt me. Sometimes I play sitting in front of my computer but not so much anymore.
