How in the hell do game developers miss things like this?!

I've been playing through Afro Samurai and the camera control is AWFUL. I'm not the only one who noticed (check the Gamespot review). This sucks, cuz Afro could be a really enjoyable hack n' slasher.

Tons of games suffer from terrible mechanic, so my question is - do they not beta test? And if they do, how it it possible they don't notice some of these issues?

have always wondered this actually, if the developers themselves arent having fun, why release it?

i guess maybe, being as it is their "baby" they love it no matter how bad it is, so if "they" like it its worth releasing.\

but i duno!

i know what you are talking about

sometimes there are glitches right there in front of you, there is no way to miss it since it is the only way to go

for example: GTA4 PC many people couldn't START the game: no way it is possible to miss that

i never saw any Valve games with any serious, critical problems (for example)

I heard a lot of game developers work on spec too - like in film. So, you'd think that would be an extra incentive to polish these things up.

By the way, has anyone on here done game testing for a development firm, either large or small?

DODS stopped working for me,then started working again during Orange engine Beta and then stopped again when fully updated, only to start working again with new graphics card and now HL2DM wont work.Yeah valve screw their games quite often, just ask anyone who played a particular source game for a few months.Oh and orange engine games low memory my PC even though my specs are 3 times higher than required,I went from playing DODS on full everything with 160 FPS to low everything 30 FPS and crash's ALL THE TIME

Yeah, I've done a few beta's, but for the most part, they generally amount to stress testing. One of the other things that I've seen that can contribute to glaring mistakes is the management vs development departments. The gamers and developers know it's wrong, but the cost/benefit analysis from management says not to fix it... Then they get player feedback and realize, oh, we should have listened to the developers, uh... here's a patch... If we're lucky that is...

That's so strange, cuz at $60 a pop, even an extra 10k-20k units seems like it would cover enough hours fo fix it. A good review would definitely get that.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to patch a console game? I'm thinking no unless you're playing the whole thing off your harddrive?

Funny, I've never had any problems with DoD:S and I've played it since it was released. (As well as CS:S.) Sometimes the Dev's run out of a cash. A prime example of this was the MMO Vanguard:Saga of Heroes. They had depleted all their funds, and had no choice but to release the game. Hence the god awful amount of bugs in the game. Other than that, they may just not care and release it anyway, knowing the company name or the name of the game will sell itself.

I think that's what it is. The devs have put time and (some) effort and probably feel like the game is good enough. They've probably played so much that they got used to whatever the problem may be. Therefore, they dont see it as a problem.

Even core game dynamics like camera? If that's the case you'd think there'd be a much more active response by developers to fix so many bug-ridden games.
