I was just thinking about it, and - laughably - I have only finished 8 of the 53 or so rpg's between the ones that I have owned, and those I still do own. Yikes! For the genre that I used to consider (and to some degree, still do) one of my favorites, that's pretty... pathetic? Normal?

Anyhwo, feel free to chime in! :) On the numbers, not the pathetic part ;)

I've finished the majority of the RPGs I own.  I usually find the stories to be worth seeing through. But, like any serious gamer, I do have a backlog and it includes RPGs, although mine isn't as extensive as some other peoples'.

It´s probobly because rpgs are becoming more and more openworld. Without that strong driving story it´s easy to have playing-experience just run out into the sand when you lose sight of that main narrative. I really hope we will see more of the Dragon Age-like games in the next generation, or at least longer deeper storylines in the o.w.rpgs.

ATM about  60% of my rpg collection. I do have a huge backlog which seems to stays the same or grow slowly... Do you guys feel guilty to keep buying more games when there are another 100 to play still? lol I usually play a game from each console at a time. i couldn't finish Zelda: Skysword though.. the story didn't really entice me enough to keep playing it... this is the first zeld that i didn't finish quickly after starting it. I didn't finish Deus EX: Human Revolution either.. i don't know why... I probably changed my focus to another game... I enjoyed it thoug... i think... lol

I'd say around half, maybe a little more give or take. If it's real story based like a Mass Effect or a Final Fantasy I have no problem getting to the end because I want to see how things are resolved. That said, in expansive games with a story I don't find all that interesting, like a Skyrim, I play for quite a bit of time but can end up getting bored with it before I get to the end.

I've finished the main story in most of the ones (90% that I have played.) Although I still have quite a backlog of games that I still have yet to play. As I seem to pick up quite a few games at $20-30 range when I see them available. I also try to finish most of the sidequests on my games so sometimes I'll be playing the same game for 1 or more months.

I would say that's pretty normal. Given how extensive some of these RPGs are these days. Plus (I'm not speaking for every gamer but) a lot of gamers I know will go out and continuously buy new games and once the new game is in your house it is kind of hard to resist opening the package and putting it on, getting absorbed into this new world and put off finishing the game you ere working on previously until you buy a another new game and the cycle continues!
If I am finding the story really interesting and/or the combat flows really well then I will more often than not see it through to the end.
Hmm but I would say I have completed the story of about half of the RPGs I own.
But if you mean finish as in collect ALL the achievements as well, then there's only a hand-full of them.

This pretty much sums it up for me. Though, back in like 2002 - 2004 I was getting some and not even touching them (like Hoshigami). And to this day, I still haven't played my copy of Xenogears!

The majority of them, unless I either get really stuck or bored with the story/ battle system.

The ending of Oblivion is the best part of the story! I finish about 80% in my first play through. And the only thing that really takes me away from a good RPG is another game that I've really, really been wanting to play. But normally I'll stick to it through the end. Admittedly sometimes I just wanted the game to end so I could go back to another. I'm looking at you Darksiders II....
