The team at FingerCramp has their Babies' Guide series aimed at teaching people some of the basic concepts of fighting games. The episodes are centered around Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but the lessons can be applied to other fighters. The tutorial mode in Skullgirls is also pretty good at helping you understand how to approach a match, rather than just showing you how to flow a fireball. If 3D fighters are more your style, then the tutorial suite in Virtua Fighter 4 is the best of the best. It will teach you everything you need to know, though the presentation is pretty dry.

Fighting game professional EG Justin Wong also has a series called 'Step Your Game Up' that might interest you. You can find the first entry here. Hope this helps!

I always take my time in training mode getting used to the game whenever I get a new fighting game. I check out the command list, I try out each move a couple of times until I can pull it off easily, then I try putting them together between punches/kicks, then I start putting the enemy moving, etc etc. I got the hang of Guilty Gear in less than a week like that, and I used to suck at the game before I recently picked up X2 #Reload.

Or if you suck at doing combos trying maybe being a zoner, personally i don't like zoning but people say its legit.

zoning = keep your opponent away from you and can't touch you, you spam fireballs or whatever moves you have to keep your opponent away at all costs.

In games like mortal kombat you can spam with kitana or kabal look up videos and see what i mean, street fighter games you pick sagat and do fireball wars or something ahah..

Zoning is just controlling space, be it with a normal or of course with a fireball.

Fireballs are good for zoning because they are a moving hitbox that force your opponent to take chip damage or jump over tham and risk being hit by something in the air.

Keeping your opponent away is...called keep away.

Also, explaining what game you're trying to play helps. They're all very different, gameplay wise.

The better fighting games feature a training/practice mode that also tell you how to do combos.
