Because from the looks of things, loads of people seem to have gotten GTA IV. And you got to be at least 18 years of age to get the game. I had no idea there were so many older people here getting the game.

Or maybe everyone just encouraged their parent to buy the game, or somehow cheated to get it? (not accusing anyone, just want to know) It must've been hilarious to see packed game stores with clerks checking everyone's ID, that would definitely make the wait in the queue longer! Or maybe game stores don't check for ID anymore? Anyone want to confess? ;) :D

So wait, if you're an old man at 26, what does that make me at 32?

18. You only have to be 17 to get it though just so you know. I just got home a few minutes ago. I just need to quickly finish DMC4 (4 more levels) so I can move on to GTA4.

If I don't shave, then I almost never get carded, but I'm curious to know whose parents are buying this game without even realizing the content.

It's true, the majority of gamers are between 18-30 years old. Seems like we have proof in this board :)

I'm 20 myself, and now after seeing the gameplay marathon, very excited about the game.

System Wars, yeah, check your age at the door :P

Huh. Of course the average age of gamespot users is around/above 20. I don't see what it's got to do with GTAIV, though. I'd estimate the average GTA-player at about 15...

Ooh, that's controversial...! I believe any kid under 18 shouldn't be allowed to play a M-rated or 18+ game, but I know other people think that the age probably doesn't apply to a person's mental maturity to accept such content.

They don't even have to have parental consent or anything actually. If a store wants to sell it to a pre-teen, nobody will be able to do anything about it.

Every time somebody says there is a law in the U.S. stopping children from buying M-rated games, my brain dies a little. Every time somebody says there should be a law like that, the Constitution dies a little, and the person who said it moves a little bit closer to being the angry old guy who chases kids off his lawn with his cane.

Whoa, I thought you would say something around the lines of, "They shouldn't be playing it because it has stuff they shouldn't know about?" but instead you said there would be no point? I don't get it...

In my country, the average age of gamers are 15-20. If you are 25+ and still play games, people here would look at you as childish.

You have to be 17 or older in the US to buy an M rated game. Not to play. If someone can convince their parents that they are mature enough then they have every right to play the game. Some kids are spoiled though and too immature to play the game. But if they snap and shoot up a school, it wasn't the game's fault. They would break eventually.

Edit: I am 16 and am as, if not more, mature than my sister who is 18 and my brother who is 22. It should be noted that age doesn't always equate to emotional stability; responsibility, maturity, etc.

Clarification: In the US ESRB ratings are an industry guideline they are not mandated by the government or any other regulating body. However most retailers do enforce them as a corporate policy, which is completely different than legal enforcement.

In the UK and other countries they are mandated, correct?

Yeah, I have to say that every time somebody makes a thread like this. Nobody seems to figure it out. A law like that would be struck down by the courts in an instant, and in fact, they have been in many states. If I ran a store, I could sell GTA4 to a group of middle schoolers without any fear of the police fining me or something.

No kidding, age is a number. It has never been an indicator of maturity. It only indicates how many years you have managed to stay alive. I know people in their late twenties I would feel uncomfortable being around had they played GTA4 recently. I played FF11 online for a year or so. Found a good friend, we adventured together a lot. Rare person really, mature, intelligent, and friendly. Found out before I went cold turkey on the game, that he was twelve. But the best person I was ever able to party with anyway.

Exactly. I knew all about the difference between fantasy and reality long before I was 17. But I did and still do see a lot of 30+ year olds still going through the "gangsta rapper/girl" and "I got x women pregnant" phases. Funny how you rarely hear people complain about the many adults who act that way, yet there's always some idiots who think that all teenagers do it.

I have always been under the impression that to purchase an M rated game you only had to be 17, especially because last year I purchased Mass Effect, Halo 3, and Bioshock, and showed my ID for each purchase, yet I didn't turn 18 until February of this year.

Oh, but I have no interest in GTA, so I haven't bought it.

Here in my country, you can buy any game whatever your age is. I bought GTA III when I was 15 and Vice City at 16.

During the PS1 years, I bought Residnt Evil 2 at 12 years old.

Parents here doesn't care if their kids play violent games, because it's only a game. They raise their kids well.

I would say that the average age of people on the gaming board (system wars excluded) are 20-22. Older in PC and PC hardware boards. I'm 21.
