I appreciate everyone's comments, and I appreciate that this has remained a civil debate. Now, two things:
I hate it because it embodies everything that's wrong with the industry these days. Yearly sequel rehashes, overpriced DLC, overly linear/scripted gameplay, and a excessive reliance on generic multiplayer to increase the longevity of the title. It doesn't help that multiplayer is populated by the bottom feeders of the videogame audience.DJ_Lae
The COD franchise is.... a billion dollar industry. Once a game begins to make this much money, the publisher, which exists as a money making business, will 100% of the time proceed to produce yearly sequels and DLC. It is, quite simply inevitable. Trying to blame Activision or Call of Duty for the over exposure is like blaming the sky for being blue. I guarantee you that ANY franchise will inevitably turn out this way once it begins to generate 1 Billion + dollars. That is simply a fact, not a reflection upon the developer or publisher.
I have fun with Call of Duty, especially Black Ops. I'm not expecting to be blown away. It's the equivalent of a popcorn flick. You play it simply to be entertained. COD may not push things forward, but it does what it does very well, and people buy it in record numbers. romans828_2002
You my friend have gotten right to the point, I believe. I think too many gamers have this mis-guided notion that every game must be an art form which constantly evolves and moves forward and pushes the boundaries of gaming. While games can absolutely be considered an art form to some extent, the bottom line is that games are played because they are fun. And apparently, a crapload of people think the COD multiplayer is just downright fun. COD4 was innovative and did evolve the genre. It has since settled into it's formula of success, where it continues to satisfy most gamers. End of story.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is this...."Take it for what it is". Modern Warfare is simply a fun fast paced multiplayer shooter. It has unarguably achieved a (temporary or not) pretty solid formula for competitive online gaming. It just really bugs me when people want to make COD out to be a "sign of the times" or a "symbol of what's wrong with people today" or "the end of the FPS genre". It's not that serious. It's just a really fun game that most people agree is very entertaining. I give Jason and Vince props.
