I know they are very different but is the gunplay in gta4 anywhere near as fun as Mafia? And I really loved the story and characters in Mafia...they really made the game for me in the absence of a open world that is more than just a way of getting to the next mission.

GTA4's story is not as coherent as Mafia 2's. While Mafia 2 keeps the story divided between a handful of characters and a few side characters, GTA4 has a single main character with tons of supporting roles. There are a lot of diverging stories that do not have anything to do with the main story line. You may not play a single mission that has to do with the main story line for hours at a time only to be shoved into one or two and then sent back to piddling around the streets. I enjoyed GTA4, but it seemed long winded without a clear purpose. Mafia 2 had a movie quality story line. GTA4 is a much bigger game with tons of things to do. They are different, but both are great in their own ways. GTA4 is certainly worth a buy.

Mafia 2 is much more story driven, has better characters, GTAIV leaves you more freedom and more guns to play around with, bigger explosions, but it's a bit tedious, I had to push myself to play GTAIV to the end, while I devoured Mafia 2 in a few days (granted, it's a pretty short game)

They're not that different. It's just that Mafia II is a good game, while Grand Theft Auto IV is a classic.

The games are pretty similar, although I think GTA is a better game. I think you should get it and I think you'll like it.

I havent actually played GTA IV but if it was like Vice City and GTA III in any way. GTA IV is a definate have. I am trying to Stop playing games that degrade women and degradethe idea of Sex, so I dont really plan to play it either.

The second half of Mafia 2 wasn't as appealing as the first. Too much driving really made things stale towards the end. It could have been an incredible game, but it's still a very good one. I actually enjoyed it more than GTA IV. But that's because I'm not much of a GTA IV fan. I preferred Episodes from Liberty City over GTA IV.
