What's with the obsession with old old games? I mean yeah they were good back then but compared to games now they just fall short. Take Mario for example. It was utterly epic when it first came out but now the idea is not only old but really not all that impressive. It's essentially jumping and dodging and what not. Platforming at its simplest. Thats fun but not really that impressive. I mean The Guy is the same thing right (except impossibly hard and therefore much less fun) and it's for free yet people still bought the new Mario (which is basically the exact same thing).Obviously there's been thousands of games just like Mario and obviously they were all just copys but thats my point it's so damn easy to copy!

Now games like God of War take that kind of simple platforming and incorporrate it into other styles of gameplay seamlessly. Not only is there great platforming but great hack and slash action, great visuals (not needed but a definate plus when it's that good), and a great theme overall (my humble opinion of course). Now I know we all have our own opinions and you can say that Mario acheived a level of fun higher than God of War but one thing you can not say is that it does anything better because I'd love to see you try and prove that. That's basically all I'm trying to get across.

(Yes I know there are games that copied God of War but somehow they never seamed to get it right like GoW did)

(^^^Except for Dante's Inferno possibly)

Most of it has to do with nostalgia. But I think your selling retro games really short. Some of them are great and really hold up.

I understand what you're saying. Most older games can be beaten in a single sitting, and for a modern game, that would be completely inexcusable. However, there are many old games that are just as fun now as they were when they were first released. Super Mario World is a great example; the game is 20 years old, yet the graphics still look vibrant and beautiful and the secrets and fun powerups are still great fun.

the thing is games like mario are just plain entertaining for everyone. not everyone likes GOW not everyone likes COD but everyone and literally their mother can pick up and enjoy a mario game. does this mean that these types of games shouldnt evollve? of course not but even if they stayed as simple as they are now people will still find enjoyment in them. and then dont even get me started on the nostalgia factor...

That's pretty much the reason I use to explain why I tend to prefer older games. Take somthing like System Shock 2 - it's old, and plenty of games have borrowed heavily from it since then (like Bioshock and Dead Space), yet no game has ever managed to do what it does just as well.

More gameplay features doesn't always mean a better game, either. The old Mario games might not be brimming with different moves and so on, but they pretty much perfected their own formula, so they'll always be great games.

I would say you were either born in the 90's and never got a taste of the 80's gaming revival or you were not much of a gamer back then and could not appreciate the simpleness yet addictiveness these games have brought. It is very difficult to translate what older gamers find in games like the old Super Mario Bros. to the newer generations. The definition of a hardcore gamer is not a person who plays the coolest and only the new games, but also plays the old and very hard games of any system. The very idea of a hardcore gamer came when videogames were not what the cool kids were known for. Now a days to be cool you must own a PS3 and play a certain demographic of games which by that is actually limiting your scope in gaming which is why I would believe you would be posting that you have.

In other words if you don't get it why people love Mario games and the oldies, you don't think about it cause you'll never get it. You don't have to, you were never meant to. Somethings are never meant for you to comprehend because you missed out on them.

BTW, I played God of War and waiting for part 3.

It allows gamers to participate in parts of gaming history they may have missed. For example, I played mostly computer RPGs and did not play games on the NES, SNES, etc. Perhaps there will be a time when I'd want to go back and experience how it all began because I missed it the first time around and feel that I might get deeper enjoyment from the current Mario games by playing a part of Mario's history. There are also computer RPG's that I've missed, so one day I'd like to go back and experience them because it adds to my overall gaming experience and enjoyment. Also, there may have been games in the past that I wanted to play, but couldn't afford them all at the time, so now that I can better afford them or they have become abandonware, I am able to finally play them, while still enjoying newer games too. Sometimes I do replay older games out of nostalgia or just because they are just really good games that the better graphics of lesser games just cannot diminish, and have a lot of replay value. I do love the newer games, but I love many of the older games too and still have a bunch on my backlog.

people play older games for alot of reasons, nostalgia is one of them, or maybe they prefer a simpler sort of gameplay and graphical design.

as for me, I really couldnt care how old a game is, I play both new and old games and like them both equally

right now im playing Eternal Sonata on the PS3, as well as Policenauts on the PS1, simply because I can appreciate the simpler graphics.

same goes for gameplay, I can appreciate and enjoy a simple 2D side scroller, just as much as a modern action platformer like Uncharted 2

Some older games simply haven't been done right in later generations. It's not all nostalgia.

It works like this - Retro Games = fun, but not that impressive... Modern Games = impressive, but not much fun...

Some of it is the nostalgia factor. Plus everybody can have their own opinion. Some people are just retro game fanatics.

If you actually grew up in the 80's, (or at least went back and played what you missed) you'd show a lot more appreciation for what the gaming industry has gone through and achieved. Something that most gamers nowadays have no incentive for.

I think you're confusing complexity with quality. The most popular game world-wide today is probably chess, and fundamentally, that's not a very complicated game. But more importantly, it's elegant. A lot of older games have a kind of elegance in their design that transcends age. Also, an argument can be made that Super Mario Brothers 3 looks more attractive than a number of modern games; it has a vision of a bouncy dream-world, while many modern-day games consist of replicating human beings in boring, stiffly animated detail. That's not necessarily more visually appealing. Elitism, either old-school or new-school, misses the heart of videogames; to produce whatever works, within whatever limitations. By that measure, Super Mario Brothers 3 is still in my top ten games of all-time. Also, are you sure that your children won't say about the FPS we play today that all you do is point and shoot while they play games they think are so much better by then?

Well if that's the case, then you might as well argue that Zelda: TP and RE4 looks visually inferior to SMB3 just as well.

But really, I don't see how something that looks basic and possesses a few frames of animation is any more attractive than a fully emotive 3-D character in a living, breathing world.

People who only find pleasure in the nostalgia they have from the NES/SNES era are simply pretentious snobs who refuse to have fun with current generation software.

Pressing A to jump over a pixelated turtle was considered primetime gaming in the 1980s, I think we as a civilzation and more specifically, a gaming culture have evolved with the technology.

Let me put it another way.

Why bother advancing science, or coming up with new works of art or literature if the classics were "so much better"?

I do look back fondly on games like Contra, or The Ocarina of Time and Megaman 2, but I also show favor towards your Metal Gear Solid 4's, Mass Effect, Gears of War and so forth. Honor the past, don't dwell on it or you can't move forward.
