...Dark and mysterious: as regarding both atmosphere and storyline, if possible.

I've already seen to and finished with the Silent Hills and Fatal Frames, as well as Manhunt, Forbidden Siren 1 & 2 and Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit.

They needn't be survival horror, just very dark in tone.

The Kingdom Hearts games. Yeah, I know what your thinking. "What?! A game with Disney characters couldn't POSSIBLY be dark and serious." I thought that once too, but the storyline is EXTREMELY deep. Love, mystery, betrayal. All that good stuff. Not to mention they'll last you 30 hours or so each.

Maybe you should try shadow of Destiny / shadow of memories.

Its about a guy who has to travel through time to prevent his death, but there are twists and turns along the way. It also has multiple endings depending on what you do and don't do, the more endings you get the more of the story you uncover.

It was a great game when it first came out, but its very dated these days. It's kind of similar to Fahrenheit / Indigo prophecy.

Here's a vid of the start of the game, may interest you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpoZWNeseuU

Thanks for that Franky-the-bat. - And yes, I should also look to the RE series...I've only completed the fourth.

SMT games in general. Digital Devil Saga1-2 is the most awesome SMT game though in my opinion.

The Suffering 1 & 2 are your best bet, especially if you liked Manhunt. Go get'em!

We're making progress; I've ordered The Suffering and Shadow of Memories - both were quite cheap. I'm happy to say that I currently own a number of Shin Megami Tensei titles: Digital Devil Saga 1, Persona 3 & Persona 4. None of them have been completed; I'd better get busy...

Shadow Hearts series if you're into turn-based RPGs that is.

Give Trapt and Haunting Ground a look. The Clock Tower series as well, the first two are PS1 but the third is on PS2.

Try out the Suffering. It's cheap, dark, gory, and is also one of the manliest horror games I've ever played.

Shadow of the Colossus?

It's not bloody or gory but it is very gloomy, quiet, and mysterious throughout the game and the ending' sad.

You "VERY MUCH need" recommendations for darker PS2 games? What, is it for a science project, or did somebody make fun of you for having Cookie & Cream?

Well, how about Devil May Cry? At the very least, the gothic tone in that game (which is pretty lacking in all the sequels) makes Devil May Cry one of the best looking games on the PS2. The game is old as hell as far as PS2 games, and chances are you already spent the $10 to get a copy.

Well, umm... Grand Theft Auto is dark, but I'm very sure that's not what you mean. I've been replaying Hexen on the N64 lately. They don't make awesome looking games like that anymore. It's totally demonic, red apocalyptic skies and hellspawn everywhere.

I'm afraid after that, I'm pretty much tapped on really dark games. I don't really play anything with mansions and serial killers much, I prefer playing one in real lif.... I mean... umm... I really like petting kittens, 'cause they're soft. :3

All I have left is the obvious Resident Evil stuff, Twisted Metal Black (and the rest of the series, especialy Twisted Metal Lost), and both Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, which you should play regardless. They aren't really too dark, some of the enemies actually look almost comical, they have some humor hidden in there (especially the latter), and after multiple playthroughs I still can't really tell you why they earned an M rating (I've seen bloodier games rated T, like Samurai Shodown Anthology, and much worse language in Shadow the Hedgehog with it's damnfest. At least LoI has The Forgotten One, but what about CoD?). It's really popular to hate on the PS2 games because they're 3D and not SotN, but they're actually pretty fun, even if they recycle too much.

Blood Will Tell has you play as a guy who's missing far too much of his body, and he fights a ton of enemies (read: boss battles) to get each one back. He starts out with no proper vocal chords and you see everything in black and white, which is cool, but most of all he his freaking knifes for arms. It's based on the Osamu Tezuka manga Dororo, and it may not be "dark", per se, but the main character certainly has a ****ed up backstory, and though the gameplay is lacking, it's based on Dororo and therefore has a story worth playing for. You don't need to have read the manga to enjoy the game at all, they even change some of the story in the PS2 game.

If you want a mysterious game with a dark setting and storyline? Go with Baroque. I really can't stress enough how deep this game gets. Only problem is that this game is quite rare, it took me months to find.

I was going to try Baroque when it came out, because I'm a fan of dungeon crawlers and I heard people in the community talking about it. Apparently, 9/10 people agree that it sucks. So, is it any good, and is it in the bargain bin yet? Ah, I've heard nothing but bad about the game since it came out.

Shin Megami Tensei games. They are all very dark (Persona 4 isn't as dark as the rest though.) Be warned, don't play them if you hate JRPGs.

Twisted Metal:Black had multiple storylines that were very dark. Some of it's cutscenes sent chills down my spine.

^ Chills, huh? I'd say like dark humor, it made me smile at the least and laugh at the most. Maybe I'm just twisted like that, but my friend laughed as well during No Face's ending. Yeah, I've heard those Shin Megami games are pretty dark, with people shooting themselves in the head or something.

I wouldn't know, though. They sound like complicated RPG's for people already involved in the series, so I never bothered to care about the series at all.

These suggestions are diverse and 'very much' appreciated; thank you all. I do already own Persona 3 + 4 (unfinished), Manhunt (unfinished) and the Hitman games - but good recommendations anyway; here there be taste.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Shadow Hearts (but not necessarily the sequels (though they are good games)) should help fill the void for you.

Dark cloud (original, i don't know about the second) skirts somewhere comfortably between dark and uplifting. I very much recommend it.

man what about god of war? how much darker can you get than being betrayed by your god into killing your wife and child... only about as dark as then killing the god who made you make yourself into a monster... then, you get screwed out of what you did the whole thing for by some technicality in language that hobag, athena laid on you -- what a trickster. that's some oedipus junk there... that'll mess with you for life. other than that, onimusha series is darkish... are zombie samurai dark? you'd do well to not forget that your ps2 also plays the aforementioned castlevania sotn, or any other ps1 game... some of which are quite dark and enjoyable today; blood omen: legacy of kain/soul reaver, loaded, the plethora of dark playstation rpgs.
