Beatmania is the greatest rhythm game available.

Just read the gamespot review of it, it sucks, the song list is lame. Brittany Spears Toxic?? please?? Give me something good. Techno also sucks, so that is a reason also.

*smacks forehead*

Oh that's why! You've never played it and are basing your opinion about the game off of the review of the American version. I completely understand now.

And please tell me another form of music aside from electronically composed music that allows for the complexities and challenge that Beatmania offers.

Problem is most if not virtually all rap songs use a looping beat, usually simple, rap is more about the lyrics.

Although not very good there is:

Get on Da Mic for the PS2

Lowrider for the PS2

I highly recomend both Parapa The Rapper games for the PS1 and PS2 they are very cartoony but have hip hop style music.

There really is not very many Hip hop music games out there

Beatmania does suck though. My friend bought it full price, played it at my house, and returned it literally an hour and a half later. It blows.

Anywho, Def Jam Icon is sorta rhythym-based. You have to time your attacks with the music. Never actually played it, but that was a big feature it had.

Let me guess... another victim of the American version?

Try the Japanese version... you know, the version actually made and supported by Konami. The version that gets played professionally and has some songs within new mixes that no human on Earth can play.

Yeah, I also did play the American version, I just did not read the review like other people in this thread said, I experienced it crappness in person, with the controller, one of my friends roommates had it. And yeah, I was in the middle of a Def Jam Icon career when my 360 crapped out on me, and yes I did love the way the gameplay went with the music.

I have Parappa the Rapper for PS1, and loved it. Maybe I'll look into get on the Mic, if I can ebay it cheap, what the hell.

Thanks for the help guys

The American version of Beatmania is garbage... that is why it received such poor reviews. You cannot call Beatmania garbage until you have played the "true" version of the game. And as a matter of fact, Beatmania is easily the best rhythm game available. It is the most versatile in terms of musical selection as well as level of quality in the charts.

Just because something is hard doesn't make it bad.

I would love to play the Japenese version, but I really don't feel like pimping out my ps2 so that it can play Japenese games, I think I will save buy a PS3 instead, seeing my 360 is broken under my bed

Sorry if I refuse to import games. We didn't like it because it got boring fast, not because it was hard. DDR had dancepads, Guitar Hero has the guitars, this had...buttons. It was almost like playing DDR with a normal controller. Except the songs sucked.

I heard of a game called Get on Da Mic which let you sing along to rap songs, although I don't know what kind of reviews it got.

Here's what would happen with a Hip Hop rhythm game...

You'd get all the songs that are played on the radio 15 times an hour... you might enjoy that track list buuuuuut therein lies the problem.

most of them have looped beats shorter than music on a See and Say (tM)

so playing the same 6 second pattern over 5 minutes would be an exercise of repetition.

To actually get a good hip hop rhythm game, they'd have to use underground producers buuuuut therein lies the problem... it won't have Soulja Boy, Lil Jon, and any other near-talentless hack therefore it would never sell well.

it's the nature of the beast
