If Mario wasn't the mascot of Nintendo

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Mario. Actually, I love a large majority of Mario games that were made. But I just wanna alter something just a bit. My question is what if Mario's games weren't successful and he didn't turn out to be the main mascot of Nintendo? Who exactly do you think would be another choice for a mascot of Nintendo??? Better yet, who do you think would've took the cake of mascot for having the most successful game?
