Is it me or is gamespots expectations going way down. I mean look at the scores this year. I mean look, 2 games got 10s, and multiple others got 9.5s!

IMO, no game should ever be perfect, unless it is perfect. With gamespot giving GTA4 and MGS4 a 10, its basically saying you should find nothing wrogn at all i neither ofthose games. But look at GTA4 for example, look at all the complaints!

Also, giving games like Braid a 9.5? So gamespot isgiving Mario ripoffs almost 10s now? WTF.

No, just the standards of the industry in general. Remember back in the late 90s, when reviewers would tear a game in half if they found a significant flaw? Seems that a lot of reviewers brush that crap aside today.

also agree that it's the industry in general...while it was a good year for gaming overall, there are alot of games this year that, when looked back with hindsight in a year, were ridiculously overscored.

I defintly have to agree with "No game is perfect" because I love MGS4 but I think the flaw for ME is that like you only have 5 Minutes to play the game then a 1 hour cut scene.

Same here. Whatever got a 10 on GameSpot, for instance :P. 10 should almost never be used. Hell, even I wouldn't rate my top game ever a perfect 10!

No I don't think so, we're just getting alot of really fantastic games is all. I like seeing games get 10's as I don't believe it should be some mythical number that is never used. In fact I feel that there have been games that should have been given a 10 that weren't. For instance Halo 3 and Gears of War 2.

It's actually the other way around really- the vocal minority on websites like this enjoy ripping games apart more than playing them. GTA4 and MGS4 were both totally awesome, and if any game deserves a 10, those would be it. There is no point having a rating scale where the top score is unattainable unless the game is made by Jesus himself or something. I think this whole attitude is summed up when you say that Braid was just a "Mario rip-off" which makes me very much doubt that you played the game. Those kinds of misguided complaints are usually what I hear when people complain about the really awesome games that came out this year.

Nope, if a game is a 9.8, why not give it a 10? I hate when people say no game is perfect, if no game is perfect then why even have a 10 point scale then? Different reviewers have different opinions on games in general (GS isn't the only website to give GTA a perfect score) It amazes me how many people are so quick to judge GS because of the perfect score they gave GTA...they weren't the only website to score the game that high.

If no game should ever be rated a 10, why even bother having a 10 point scale at all? These are just numbers, guys. Numbers from a site that lost it's credibility in a scandal, and has yet to get it back. Let GS do whatever, and just enjoy the forums.

OMG they really have to let us bypass cutscenes..they are soooooo annoying....

like geez..who needs to watch a log-on screen going on and on ....i think everyone is just getting lazy or rushed...and putting games out before they are ready..duh...

id rather wait for a high quality game...then find a zillion glitches in one..and then download patches for months afterward....then toss the darn cd away cause the glitches drive u crazy lol

No, just their intelligence.

You know something's wrong when they expect multiplayer out of King's Bounty: The Legend.... a TBRPG. :|

GameSpot is going to make stupid decisions forever. I've gotten used to it over the years.

I think the absolute worst thing was when they gave Dead Rising best action adventure over Twilight Princess. Good grief.

How about plain out giving Twilight Princess an 8.8!?!? That was mental!

I hate that so much about all MGS games. The thing that bothers me is that it's mostly just babbling and they could condense these 20 minute cutscenes to 5 minutes very easily. I don't know why they keep torturing the player with that crap.

Well, if everyone starts giving out low scores then games are a little bit less appealing to the non-gaming crazies that end up playing everything anyways. The Video Game business is skyrocketing while the rest of the economy is falling like a rock. If critics are too harsh on games then it might affect sales, and if games go back to a undermined entertainment form then they could be out of the job cause less money means less people giving a crap about reviews and magazines. Just looking at it from another perspective. There were a lot of 9.0's this year but I haven't played most of them yet so I can't say for sure if this was right or wrong.

Not really considering just about every Zelda game besides Wind Waker and Majora's Mask are the same thing. Sure they're still great games but they just feel...to similar for games that aren't really "sequels".

The problem with this thought is that in general, the public doesn't care as much about critical opinion regarding things like game/music/movie purchases. If that was the case, lesser advertised, but critically acclaimed titles would sell much better than highly advertised, critically panned games, which has been a trend for a long time, even before games were as mainstream as they are now.

Ditto...With the new score scale either you can have a hundred quality titles all scored at 9.0, which would be even less satisfying, or you can have a bunch of games getting 9.5s and 10s because they are the best of their genre. I prefer the latter, though I do miss the old scoring scale slightly, only because it seemed like it was harder for people to find flaws with it even though it was equally as flawed. There is no right way to impose numerical scores on games or even most forms of entertainment, it isn't math and there can never truly be any objective manner of doing it as much as some people would like. The old scoring scale was just better at holding a veil of objectivity.

(That concludes my wannabe Skylock like post)

Sometimes I think they should just separate reviews and ratings into technical and gameplay to cater the increasing split among gamers who are more appealed to either of the factors. It is getting exceedingly annoying to see a game's rating getting boosted significantly due to it's technology breakthrough while its enjoyment factor is pure moot. Want an example? Look at last year's Assassin Creed. If you want a more current example, GTA IV, the greatest embodiment of boredom hidden under lots of irrelevant content, and it's safe to say that it is TESIV: Oblivion's R* cousin.

If you actually read the review or even watched the reviews, you'd know that they were aware that a 10 may come off as perfect. However, they said that it wasn't and they named flaws. READ!

People tend to forget or not even realize how difficult it is to develope and market a game that will even sell. 90% of the games released are garbage but when a game like Fallout 3 hits the market, a 10 is acceptable which surprisingly this game did not get on this site. However, to say there is no such thing as a perfect game is ridiculous.

Well according to the wording under a game that scores a 10 it is perfect, so...

A 10 score means Prime, not perfect.

Basically, it's impossible for a game to be perfect. Games always have flaws, and even when a game wouldn't have flaws, that doesn't mean it's the best game out there.

A 10 score is to be seen as a game that stands out so much above the 9.5 games that it shouldn't be in the same tier. This year two games did this, which are both amazing in their own right. I wouldn't have wanted to see them getting a 9.5 because I too think they deserve more than that. Wanting only games that have been handed to you by god himself to get a 10 basically means we push the entire rating system down .5 point, and GTA 4 and MGS 4 would've gotten a 9.5, and the second highest rated game would get a 9. If that soothes your mind, then subtract every score with .5 and you can live happily ever after.

Haha you lost me at Mario ripoff. Play a game before you bash it. Braid is pure innovation.
