Is it me or does Battlefield 3 look terrible on consoles?

So... I've been playing the BF3 beta on XBOX today and the game is ok I guess, though there are no vehicles in the demo map and I don't like the fact they dumbed down sniping.

What really shocked me are the graphics, look:

Why does it loook so bad? Everything is in low resolution, the characters and objects are made of an incredibly low amount of polygons, there are graphical glitches everywhere, visible texture seams, pop-up, screen tearing. Try walking up to a tree and zoom in, see what I mean: you can see the tree is made of a few huge polygons stacked up on top of each other.

I know it's a beta, but the game comes out in a month, I don't think the final game will be much different (also considering the Bad Company 2 beta was identical to the final release).

If you can, BUY IT ON PC!

Sigh :(

There's a reason why PC Gamers keep saying consoles are holding graphics back. BF3 is one example.

If you are zooming in to look at a tree in a battlefield game, you are not doing it right.

I will download the pc versoin and the ps3 version tonight, and do a comparison.

Well, it doesn't look as good as it was hyped to do. But the graphics are still alright, the glitches are too heavy to survive until the final release and the gameplay works fine. I'm having fun as long as I stay away from the first Alpha M-Com (ground diving, anyone?).

What did you expect? It's a PC port with many features removed and it's tech toned down. For amazing looking graphics on consoles stick with Killzone 3, UC2 (I hadn't played or seen 3 in action), Gears Of War 3 or even more artsy games like Child Of Eden or El Shaddai.

Since its a beta I don't get too down about the graphics and issues that are popping up. Isn't that why we are playing this beta in the first place, so devs can fix the problem before release? I would rather have this happen now then have it happen on launch. But yes, PC will look a lot better. Nothing we can do about it.

Graphics look good to me, sure there's pop in textures but its not surprising; almost everyone knew the game won't look as good on consoles compared to the trailers they've shown for the PC version.

When I saw the console footage, I took it off my list of games to buy. It will most likely be the game that gets me to buy a new PC after many, many years.

Dice said in an interview that the console versions are running on a level equivalent to the PC's "low" spec. As for why it's running at such a low spec on consoles, it's because the game is running on consoles. The low resolutions are necessary because consoles don't have enough VRAM to do good textures. The low polygon counts are needed because the GPUs are too weak to render a full polygon model in BF3. This is why PC gamers have been saying for the past several years that consoles are holding back PC gaming. If you want to see what BF3 would have looked like if consoles were the lead platform, look at BFBC2.

That's the thing, PCs have 10x the amount of power as either console. The reason some console games like GeoW3 look good on consoles is because the gameplay and level design has been designed in such a way so as to limit the amount of graphics processing the consoles have to do by as much as possible. (ex: avoiding open areas in favor of tight corridors, limiting the amount of enemies/players on the screen, keeping environmental objects to a minimum, designing levels so that only a single room or city block has to be rendered at any one time, adding fog/smoke to hide low draw distances, etc). Since BF3's lead platform is the PC, none of those design limitations were implemented and as a result the consoles struggle to run the game even on the lowest settings.

FarCry 2 renders 50 square Km of stunning-looking Africa without intermediate loading times. That game runs like a beauty on consoles and that's because the Dunia engine is scalable to the point of holiness. Wouldn't a console that can handle FC2 that well also be able to make Battlefield 3 look decent? I'm not saying good, I'm saying decent. I think the problem here is that the Frostbite engine is showing its huge limitations.

Mutliplayer looks as good as any other shooters. It just looks bad because they advertise the PC version. If the PC verison was never shown as the "marketed" video the way Squaresoft use to use CG for FF then no one will really think the game looks like crap. Its graphics is on par with most games if not better. Can't say that for the beta as a whole however...its crap.

True but the fact that consoles exist means dev's make games for them and not PC cos they make more money at it. Perfectly fine I don't care. But if you think about it, if Epic and Naughty Dog and all other dev's made games ONLY for PC imagine what they could look like? They can make games look THAT good on such old hardware, imagine what they could do with newer hardware. Dev's wouldn't have to scale things back as much and port them if consoles didn't exist

I think it looks ok myself. There are quite a bit of glitches and oddities though which will hopefully and likely be fixed for the full release. There were a number of times it looked like I had gone through the ground in the game while crawling with a vast empty void beneath me.

I just played the beta on the ps3 and really, I don't see a problem with it. It looks better than BC2, and since the BC2 servers didn't work for me I'm rather excited to be getting this game, or skyrim, or dark souls, and well yeah, good thing it's the only fps this winter.

It looks the same to me. ALL games look the same as their PC. ps3. 360 versiions. Its only when you over analyze everything do you notice the differences but for the most part it looks identical.

Pretty much.

I admit that they aren't "make you weep" graphics, but by no means do I think it looks bad at all. Given the size and scale of the game, I think it looks pretty good.

I only played the PS3 and xbox version, and I admit I have the habit of stopping and checking out the details of a new game most people rightfully overloook (I used to work 3D modeling) and graphics-wise Battlefield 3 looks like an early 360 game. Keep in mind this game has been on my day-one buy list for months, so I'm pretty disappointed. Oh and they dumbed it down to death: it's basically Call of Duty now. I actually saw people running around knifing people like in CoD. Ask S0lidSnake, he was in my squad

I would just like to say that consoles are not keeping back gaming on the PC or gaming in general. When PC devs make a game for the PC they have to make a game that is scalable for a variety of configurations. Placing the consoles into one of these configurations would not keep the game any more back than a low end gaming PC.

Well, i just played it and it doesn;t look bad. I will have to disagree with BlackKnight here. It looks pretty good in the tunnels actually, there is some fancy stuff going on in there with the lighting, fire and light sources, i would say it's pretty impressive for a huge map. The animation is out of this world, you really have to see it to believe it.

And yes, I did get stabbed a couple of times but the game quickly went into a stabbing animation which lasted a good three to five seconds. In COD you can stab and run through three to five guys in that time. There is terrible hit detection though but that's another story.

I thought it looked absolutely great on my PS3, especially the lighting. Battlefield 3 looks far from terrible on any system, you're just sounding biased. Unless you're talking about the uninspired art design that is, in which case, switching to the PC wont help.

I downloaded this on my PS3, mainly due to limited hard drive space left on my 120gb 360, and BF3 isn't living up to the hype visually as announced. I know this is just the beta, but how much more can they improve in less than 3 weeks? I think they may have fooled us console only gamers into believing those videos were actually 360 videos, which even Gamespot had a few videos up of gameplay footage, claiming it was 360/PS3 footage, and I can tell you it looks nothing like what I saw in those videos. I'm not sour over it, it's just that I had high expectations for it from a visual stand point, not to mention the fact that some of the Dice devs were claiming that they were working miracles with the 360/PS3 hardware, and they were basically giving us a PS4/Xbox720 game to play on current gen consoles! I hope that isn't how next gen consoles are gonna look, if so I'll just stick with what I've got. lol

I just played the PC version and tbh, it doesnt look that special on the PC either. The game I'm sure will look spectecular in Single Player where it doesn't have to worry about 24 players wrecking s*** up in a huge map.

Here are some screenshots from the PC version, running at 1080p on ULTRA settings.

Well from what I hear the ultra settings aren't really ultra, they're just placeholders before the real game. It will probably look better, but I gotta agree, as good as BF3 looks on PC, its not mindblowing. Its not like Crysis blew me away back in 2007, it looks good but not great and a lot of the power is in the effects ans huge maps with all the players.

That's because you haven't actually played the real beta, Caspian Border. That map is amazingly good and brings back the bf2 feel that was missing bc2.

not as great as I expected visually, but it's still going to be fun to play my biggest complaint about the visuals thus far is at times curved surfaces look to have low polygon counts and flat looking textures, I notice this when I go prone to avoid being seen or avoiding fire, and often the camera clipping through surfaces looks pretty bad I honestly wouldn't mind though if they dropped the resolution if it'd boost performance in other areas

I'm not so sure about that. In the games I have played there wasn't a lot of knifing going on..mainly due that it seemed to be a challenge to even get close before getting blasted in the face. Not saying you are lying, mind you. I'm sure those who got the beta early really invested in best routes or where to sneak up on someone. I saw one player who was already a lvl 26...2 days at most into the beta. That's just insane. I think once you see more people becoming adjusted to this style of gameplay, the less like CoD it will be. I can say that after getting a couple of games in, getting close enough to stab me is not as easy a feat as it was my first 2 games.

Just give it some time. I understand your complaints, but I think you are being too harsh on it.

I hope that isn't how next gen consoles are gonna look, if so I'll just stick with what I've got. lol

S0lidSnake

I just played the PC version and tbh, it doesnt look that special on the PC either. The game I'm sure will look spectecular in Single Player where it doesn't have to worry about 24 players wrecking s*** up in a huge map.

Here are some screenshots from the PC version, running at 1080p on ULTRA settings.

I read somewhere that when you choose ultra in the Beta you only get medium-high. Probably because they are still optimizing the game.

Wow that looks much better than the 360 version... but I still wasn't impressed enough by the gameplay to warrant the purchase of a new PC right now.
