Hi...

Recently I've been thinking about playing monthly paid games like Warhammer online or WOW, because a lot of my Internet and real friends play WOW.

But is it worth it to pay just to play a game ?

I was thinking like : lets say I've been playing WOW for 3 years for example, once I get bored of it, I will be thinking that I could had used the money I spent it on Wow on better things like PC hardware, FTP game...etc.

So whats your opinion ?

Sorry for the bad grammer:oops:

I personally don't like it a lot. They should have it to where you buy a certain amount of time on the game, kinda like Xbox live. You could buy monthly, 3 months, 6 months, a year, etc, when you start the game, and be done with it for that amount of time. However, I don't know how much money it takes for an online game to keep its servers up, so that could be one of the reasons also.

For me, my play time is very inconsistant, sometimes I barely touch any games for a month or two, then go crazy. It just really varies due to life and stuff getting in the way (haha). So, I stay away from the online games like that, I did try WOW once, and liked it, but it just didn't feel right to me. I try another one sometime, I think I'm gonna give FFXI a try at some point.

Well, I think its definitely worth it for World of Warcraft. Even though I'm burned out and haven't played it for 2 years, still its awesome.

I have never personally grasped the allure of paying a monthly fee for a single online title. I can understand paying a monthly fee for access to an online gaming community and a platform as a portal to additional online services (like an XBox LIve account). I think that it is awesome that there is a customer base for this market place that provides s different business model within which gaming can exist.

But I have determined that it is not for me. I am like the earlier poster who indicates that he (and I) spread our time over several titles (and platforms). I typically play on three different platforms in the course of a week, so the thought of spending time on a PC for a predominant amount of that time to play one game has not appealed to me.

Each time there comes a title that I think may be the one that brings me over. City of Heroes came close. The concept of Champions Online and the Star Trek MMO may be the ones...I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I was a huge Warcraft fan Pre-World of Warcraft. I can't call myself a Warcraft fan nowdays because instead of discussing the best way to get the original game to run on a DOS emulator, you will talk about LOL OMG RUNNING INSTANCE PVP LEVEL 70 PRIEST RAID EPIC MOUNT LULZ XDDD... >:|...

I spent $60 on World of Warcraft (midnight, best buy, whole deal) only to bring it home and find out that I had to use a credit card. I didn't have one back then. So it was back to the store for a $30 game card. With tax this puts me at about $100.

Tried the game, HATED it, of course I couldn't return it for obvious reasons. The game wasn't even in the same GENRE it was REDICULOUS, its like if someone suddenly decided to make Halo a role playing game.

Basically, paid $100 for a game that I thought would change my life but ended up costing me $100 only to feel sad and dissapointed.

Uhh... What was I talking about again. Yeah monthly fees are stupid unless its Xbox Live, fabulous service.

No. IMO MMO games are the most pointless games ever. All you do is level up your character and talk to people online. And you pay for it. You could just go outside and talk to people for free.

i can understand if people do not personally want to pay monthly for a game. however, if you think they should be free, you are a fool. dedicated servers with thick pipes for all that bandwidth are insanely expensive. customer service reps are not free either. if you dont think its worth it, dont pay it. however, you wont get the service for free. this topic comes up like once a week and its really pointless. a game like WoW would not exist if they did not charge. if you really want to debate something, call for lower pricing. something that is actually feasible..

If it is required in a game to use servers which the game developers need to spend money on to maintain and keep running, then I think a monthly fee is acceptable. However buying the game shouldn't be as expensive. Otherwise no.

Here's the deal. Gamers that pay monthly fees probably spend less money than gamers that don't.

If I was to spend $15/month on WoW for 4 months (assuming the only game that I play is WoW for those 4 months, and from what I've seen, people that play WoW really only play WoW) that's $60. Now in these last 4 months I've picked up Fallout 3, Call of Duty: World at War, GTA 4, and a few others. Each of those games runs me about $60 each. So I've ended up spending far more money than the WoW addict has in the last 4 months.

I don't think so, I find it kinda rediculous that we are charged $15 to play a game we already paid $50-60 for and then another $20-30 per expansion pack. If it was say $5 a month for a MMO I think that would be fine but $15 is too much. Seriously that is $180 per year, thats three other games you could have bought and had equal enjoyment out of.

I don't mind paying $5 a month for Xbox Live though because that covers all games as opposed to only one and comes with some nice features.

Hehehe I agree with you :D Once I upgrade my computer again I will give it a try but the problem is that I want to play the third expansion (The Wrath Of The Lich King) which means I've to buy the first game + the second expansion which in total might cost me $80, I guess I decided to play the game in a bad time :P

Not worth it for me. I tend to focus on playing one game at a time. I will play it loads until I get sick of it, then move onto another game. Even really engrossing games that take me ages I will play a lot for a couple of months, then probably not play for another 6 months. With online subscriptions you have to keep playing it every month to make it worth the money. I also look at it as spending money on a game I already have rather than getting a new game. I like to have a lot of variety while playing games, so would rather be buying a new game every couple of months, than just pouring more money into the same old game. If you are looking to get into an MMO then you could look for things like Guild Wars, where you pay for the game, but then there are no subscription fees. That way you can have your MMO fix when you want, without being tied into it financially.

It depends on the price. If it is more than $10, then NO WAY. If it's around $5-$8, it's pretty acceptable imo.

It all depends on how much you play it. For a little over a year I played WoW and nothing but WoW, and the amount of time I put into it made the cost a bargain. I came away with about 3,000 hours played and probably paid somewhere around $300 total for that. That's ten cents an hour, which is a pretty good entertainment value. Add in to that the fact that I thought WoW was a great game, and it was a bargain in my opinion. If you don't play it more than once or twice a week though, then it's much harder to justify.

$15 a month for WoW is completely reasonable considering you don't have to pay extra for things in WoW. For example, MapleStory may be free but it's very easy to burn through $50+ a month on things that should be free in the game :/

I have done it in the past and O have played MMO's that use micro transactions, to be honest if they provide a god service with friendly support they deserve the cash :). I doubt you will be paying that long though if you go to WoW, great game but I don't see how people play it for so long because it is a little on the easy side :(.

A game like WoW is utterly worth $15 a month, because you'll spend such an insane amount of time playing it, you won't spend money on much else.

Honestly, though, it includes dedicated servers, customer service, and content updates.

A peer-to-peer matching service, like XBL, should be free. The only reason it's not is because it's the only way to play online. Instead, they charge you for the service, AND cover their interface in advertisements. It's the worst of both worlds.

If I had a good computer then I would buy WoW and pay 15 dollars a month to play. Just think about this logically. Think about unlimited texting on your cell phone. This runs me 20 bucks, and honestly do I need it? Absolutely not. I didn't have texting 3 years ago, and I did just fine. 15 bucks a month comes out to about 50 cents a day. It's really not that bad, considering that we all probably spend 2-10 dollars a day on food, 5-10 dollars a day on gas, and so on. If you play the game for 15 hours a month, then it comes out to 1 dollar an hour, and I think that's a really good deal for a game like warcraft. I know some people that play 15 hours a day. They are really getting their money's worth. If you can only play a game like 5 hours a month, then I would shy against it, but if you can play a game for 15-100 hours a month, then it is most certainly worth it.

In my opinion no. That $15 every months would add up and I would rather spend that money on a game.

Exactly. Most MMO's out there today really suck you in for a while, and then one day it leaves you and you're stuck grinding away until you quit, and realize that you've wasted a whole lot of money and time on something you didn't really need. I don't hate games like WoW, but I've demo-ed them, and let's just say I was at a point of grinding after a few days. All I remember was click, slash, loot; repeat.

If you have nothing else to spend a measly $15 on, and you want to play, I see no reason why not to.
