The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. What do ya know about it? What I know about it is that it's the best Zelda game, the highest reviewed game of all time with a Metacritic score of 99/100, and many critics hail it as the best game of all time. In my case, I don't think it's the best game of all time, but it is one of the top 10 greatest games of all time. Personally, I think that the best game of all time is Super Metroid. Do you think OoT is the best game of all time, or are you like me, another person who thinks differently about what is the best game ever made? In that case, please let me know. Thanks!

It's all a matter of opinion. No one game is the definitive greatest game of all-time.

I am of the opinion that it's not the best game of all-time, though. I don't even think it's best Zelda game of all-time. That honor goes to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on SNES for me.

No, it's not. It's a great game, and has historical significance for the industry, but it has been outdone by both Majora's Mask and Wind Waker. Other games have surpassed it as well. That being said, it's still one of my all time favorites. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play and has an orgasmic soundtrack.

The best Zelda game (and BGOAT) is Majora's Mask.

How is MM and Wind Waker better? Well they are more confusing, so I guess that makes them better.

Because really, the problem with OOT is that it wasn't confusing enough.

To me, of course not. That honor belongs to Super Mario 64.

I used to agree with that, but over the years I've come to realize that Majora's Mask is a much better game in my eyes. Better world, better characters, better gimmick (dynamic gameplay with the masks vs. time travel), side quests were plentiful, and while both games share a lot of the same music I like the exclusive tracks in Majora's Mask more than the exclusive tracks in Ocarina.

no, crash bandicoot is mediocre. Sega only had a few good games, all of which were arcade games like nights which tend to age much better.

If everyone's opinions held any weight to everyone else, all of gaming is overrated and all of these so-called "classics" are just overhyped trash compared to other overhyped trash.

It all comes down to personal preference when comparing great games. The only sure-fire way to call a game great is to measure its impact on gaming as a whole, in my opinion. Games like Space Invaders, PONG, Doom/Wolfenstein, Mario 64, etc.

That's like asking:

"Is Citizen Kane really the best film of all time?"

The reason why the likes of Citizen Kane and Ocarina of Time often get the "all-time best" label is not so much because they are technically the best and have never been surpassed, but simply because these works represented a huge leap in quality for their respective media.

This.

Some genres are so completely different to each other that the best of each are incomparible.

It's probably the best ever Action-Adventure of its era on the N64 (not played it).

I can think of several Sega games of the time I prefer over Ocarina of Time, Shining the Holy Ark being one of them

and I can think of many games before and after that were better than Ocarina of time, both in 2D and 3D

I'll even list a few:

Outcast

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Shining the Holy Ark

Final Fantasy 6

Final Fantasy 7

Every Wizardry Game

Most Ultima Games

Admittedly only outcast is in the same genre as Ocarina of Time, yet it did things SO much better imo

I like Majora's Mask and I'm sure there really are people who prefer it to OoT, but it seems like these days a lot of people are just jumping on the "MM > OoT" bandwagon because it's become the cool thing to say.

Ocarina, along with Mario64, are given so much acclaim because they were Thomas Edison moments, of sorts, for the industry.

It's no where near as overrated as Wind Waker though.  At least Majora's Mask was a really cool and well made side game, some things were better than Ocarina, but it had very limited effort, planning and time put into it.

Wind Waker gets drooled over while the game responsible for Current Zelda design, Twilight princess gets spat at.  Internet...

Nope. Compared to most N64 games it's aged pretty decently, but even in '98, it couldn't sniff the title of G.O.A.T.

I don't think Windwaker is overrated at all. It's probably the tightest 3d Zelda to date. I thought the way combat was handled was rather brilliant.

Ocarina of Time isn't even the best N64 game.

Heck, Ocarina isn't even the best Zelda N64 game.

Ocarina is a pretty clinical and souless experience as far as I'm concerned, Majora has a far better story with FAR better characterisation and atmosphere, it also has better music, and better graphics, and better pacing.

Not to say Ocarina wasn't a fantastic game, its still easily 9/10. It may have had next to no story or personality, but it was highly polished and had clever dungeons and gameplay mechanics, as well as good battle controls and bosses.

Haters gonna hate.... Some comments here made me laugh.

About the game.

It looks technically great and runs at constant 20 fps, the soundtrack is gorgeous, camera is fine, various useful items, interesting npcs, nice combat system, and there's no other game with such perfectly designed dungeons.

Is Zelda OoT the best game ever made? No, a best game in general doesn't exist.

Is Zelda OoT the best game of its genre? Yes, remis with Majoras Mask for that title.

The N64 Zelda games are the pinnacles of action adventures.

The problem with these comparisons is that no game you mentioned is really comparable to OoT.

Especially not Outcast, despite a similar genre and, likely, being inspired after it...

edit: I also think that it didn't have as good design and a little "broken" shooting & movement mechanics. (keyboard & mouse limitations)

It's definitely up there, but I would personally choose either Doom, Chrono Trigger, Deus Ex, Metroid Prime, or MGS before it.

No. Although I spent a lot of time with ocarina of time[hell, i'm replaying it], its got a lot of things i hate about it. it gets boring after about an hour of play, the pace is slow and a lot of the game just seems like plodding, it's not much of a challenge either. for its time its technically impressive and definitely holds its spot as one of the best n64 games, but a link to the past is the best game of all time.

Admittedly only outcast is in the same genre as Ocarina of Time, yet it did things SO much better imo

I'm not sure if outcast was inspired by OOT seeing as how there's like a 6-7 month difference between the games

[QUOTE="BigBen11111"]Majora's Mask is over rated online, Ocarina of Time is the true masterpiece.Renegade_Fury

Internet...

Wind Waker is a steaming pile.

I like to think WW fans are a loud and obnoxious minority. The game is trash.

How in God's name is WW trash? It surpassed OoT!

In terms of suckage, yeah, it sure has OoT surpassed there.

- Crappy barren dungeons
- Boring ass ocean and sailing
- The wand is annoying to use, and sucks compared to the ocarina
- Fetch quest
- Ridiculous currency format
- Lame and unmemorable characters
- Extremely easy. I had zero motivation to get the extra equipment
- No adult Link or awesome transformations
- Worst kid Link ever. He's a crybaby wimp
- The game praises the Hero of Time so much, it makes me wish I was him the whole time
- Cell shading and art design in general. After watching the Space World 2000 demo, this was such a huge slap in the face

WW was a dumbed down and boring game, hence "trash" describes it perfectly. I think Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are better games, and I'm not joking. About the only things I liked from WW was the opening scene and the ending credits music.

Could have stopped at the starting credits if you had already formed an opinion on the game at the 10 min mark. Why  play it out? Why think its gonna get better if you hate it? Why be such a whiney **** about a game thats clearly not below great on a scale? Just keep you're terrible opinion to yourself, you must know its wrong by now.

90% of game sites say the game is of great quality, I think game is **** Hmm maybe the game just wasn't for me and I shouldn't have played it, NAH CAN"T BE THAT.

Valknut4

lol, my friend, the only one that is looking like a whiny **** is you if my opinion offends you so much. I love the Zelda series, and so why wouldn't I give this one a chance? It just happened to turn out to be a terrible game 'tis all.  Am I supposed to care what a bunch of yahoos on gaming sites gave it? I don't for any game, so why would this one be any different? I played it myself, and I came to the conclusion that it blows. Sorry if that pisses you off. :(
