terrible controller, small selection of good games and games in general. waddyu think?

It's my favorite console ever. I have no problems with the controller as it fits comfortably in my hands.
The controller is not terrible. It's not the best either, but it works great for most games on the console
I don't where you get your information, but there are tons of great games on the N64. It's overall library is a bit small compared to the PS1 or even the SNES that preceeded it, but it has one of the most quality library of games on any console.
So no, it is not a terrible console, in fact it's one of the best.
the N64 is the console that soured me on Nintendo, and it remains my biggest dissapointment in gaming.
my pesonal reasons:
- the aboslute worst control paddle ever designed; wonky analog, bad button layout, and an ergonomic nightmare.
- cartridge based system when discs were optimum (as an rpg/horror gamer, the FMV and CGI stuff on PS1 was great)
- severe lack of the genres I prefer (rpgs, shmups, 2D platformers, survival horrors)
- got the short end of the 3rd party stick (CastleVania64 vs CV:Symphony of Night, lost Square & Enix)
- no sequel to my #1 favorite SNES game (super metroid)
there were a few other minor reasons, like the fact that most of my friends went with PlayStation, but the above were my main reasons.
Though I'm a Playstation fan at heart I always had a lot of fun playing the N64 over at my friends' house. The controllers felt pretty good in the hand, the buttons were good but the infamous joystick did break really fast.
I can't comment on the singleplayer experience but the multiplayer was a lot of fun, especially the plug and play 4 player games.

I don't think the N64 is bad at all.
-The controller setup is a matter of opinion, so therefore you cannot use that.
-Cartridges had no loading time, while the PSX and the Sega Saturn both had long ass loading times and are notorious for it.
-The genres on the N64 are my favorite genres. It's just a matter of preference.
-It's first party combined with 2nd party Rareware made up for any loss of 3rd party and those games are all highly regarded.(Goldeneye, Perfect Dark)
-It was dissapointing to not have a sequel but wouldn't you agree it was far better off on the Gamecube versus the N64?
I am completely fond of the N64 and it's Pros totally outway the cons to me.
It's a terible cosole, if the hype for it's games were legit, then the Gamecube would not have lost to the Xbox even with a 2 year unopposed gap. Which still makes no sense to me, the only logical explanation is that the hype burned out people and they started to realize how poor the hyped part of the library is. The only games worth owning and N64 are hidden gems, and very few of them are actually good. It's just like the PS2, it had tons of great games, but then companies including Sony and others just started over doing the systems hype and it crashed on the PS3. And no, the controller was not good, and used properly for gaems, it was not designed to only use half the controller, which also makes me question more with what they were thiking, but also the games that do use most or the whole controller are forgotten and were ignored even by Nintendo. The only thing that makes people say the controller was not bad is nostalgia or having warm feeling playing there favorite game(s) with that controller. Like some people like OoT It was only on N64, so hey, they remember liking the game, it's their favorite or one of their favorite games, so they will exclude the fact the controller is bad just for that alone. Works with all games as well.Shockwave-DASH

So the N64 lost all support, and the Gamecube failed to gain any and lost last gen because I am blind?[QUOTE="TheKungFool"]

The genres on N64 are also on PSX ans Saturn.No.
The controller is terrible, but that doesn't change the large selection of excellent exclusives and downright revolutionary games that appeared on that console. The magnificent output of Nintendo and Rare alone compensates any damage done from the relative absence of third parties.

I liked the PSX better back during that generation, but the N64 was an awesome system. I'm not sure where you got the idea of it lacking good games. It had several good platformers, what many people consider to be the best Zelda of all time, Goldeneye, Goemon games, Harvest Moon 64, Ogre Battle 64 and Turok games were actually good back then. However, I'll be fair and say that the cartridge format did hamper 3rd party support and the system was starved for jrpgs.
i felt that it wasn't as good as the snes or the ps1 and it was the start of nintendo's first party support and lack of 3rd party games that nintendo has been doomed with for over 2 genselbert_b_23I agree with most of that, except, not having played a Game Cube, or Wii I think those systems aren't as bad as the N64 was. Having grown up with a NES, and SNES, I have a high standard for Nintendo's consoles. They use to have great games on the NES and SNES. I only played Super Mario 64, Mission Impossible, and Killer Instinct on N64, and none of those were great. MI I spent the most time on, but boy did that not age well. I actually thought the N64 controller was kind of neat, and I liked it, but the system no.

I disagree. With the Dreamcast controller you don't need to move your hand in awkward ways to reach all buttons. While with the N64 controller you do. You either hold it by the middle handle and have to remove your hand to press the left shoulder button or d-pad, or you hold it by the d-pad handle and stretch your thumb far in to reach the analog stick. The N64 controller always gets alot of heat. It's probably true that it's not a great controller but I bought a DC recently and I tell you, its controller is far from good. I rate the DC controller worse than the N64 controller.

this, the game library is great, but the controller is terrible. the analog stick I can forgive, but the whole design of it is uncomfortable. @andmcq the DC controller is indeed pretty bad, but Im not sure that makes the N64 controller any good, both are mediocre at best.I think it's a good console that has a terrible controller.

You know, N64 carts are capable of FMV's. Granted, they had to be somewhat compressed, but hey, better than nothing. The N64 port of RE2 had it and Pokemon Puzzle League had an anime FMV.

Not at all, I had a great time with it back in the day. It had a lot of great exclusives and some of the greatest games ever but certainly lacked in many genres. When I look back at it now, it has aged poorly other than a few titles and is nowhere near as good as the Gamecube and SNES IMO.
The controller is my least favorite, The Nintendo 64 my most dissapointing console. but it is not terrible.
You know, N64 carts are capable of FMV's. Granted, they had to be somewhat compressed, but hey, better than nothing. The N64 port of RE2 had it and Pokemon Puzzle League had an anime FMV. What I hate most about that generation is that everyone thought the N64 was not capable of FMV. Yet popular Blazing Star on Neo-Geo had it, and we all know the N64 crushes that machine in power. Heck, anything that played CD was also considered better graphics than N64 because of FMV as well. This thread in general seems like it's confused. A lot of people are discussing the 64 looking at it from the present instead of the past forward. The goemon games were mentioned for example, but who actually cared about those games? Most likely you didn't own them. I tried to get someone to play Mystic Ninja, and they kept wanting to play Musashi because they thought it was the more complete game and they thought they were basically the same. Mind you these are the adults so who knew what the kids were thinking.[QUOTE="TheKungFool"]

Now it is. Out of all my consoles, I think it has aged the worst, In its prime, I'd rank it near the top though.

Which controller is better for 3D platformers than the N64 controller? The answer is - no other.
It's great for 3D shooters too and even FPS.
Racers are enjoyable on it too (try playing Star Wars Racer with two N64 pads).

the PS1 dualshock is far better than the n64 controller, and thats including for 3D platformers.[QUOTE="nameless12345"][QUOTE="andmcq"]

the PS1 dualshock is far better than the n64 controller, and thats including for 3D platformers. That's opinion. I find the analog sticks on DualShock are just "slapped on" and on wrong positions. FPS is also worse on DS. Only case where DS has the upper hand are fighters and some racers imo.

The N64 port of RE2 had it and Pokemon Puzzle League had an anime FMV. its always "possible" , there are several Mega Drive games with FMVs, like Red Zone , or Sonic 3D blast , hell even the Gameboy version of cannon fodder had an opening FMV. just because its possible doesnt mean its suitable for it, I dare say the N64 would have never been able to have all the FMVs of the FF games, no matter how compressed they were.[QUOTE="TheKungFool"]

I still find the resistance and size of the dualshock pads are better than the N64 one, and this takes into account the wear and tear factor on both.[QUOTE="Darkman2007"][QUOTE="nintendoboy16"]You know, N64 carts are capable of FMV's. *can't see new posts*DudersaperThought I was the only one. I saw -8 new posts next to the thread below and was like "huh?"
Is it just me or does that FMV intro in Pokemon Puzzle League look and sound really good?
N64, the unknown FMV king? :P
