Just want to say that I know there are people who have the mentality that a gamer is gamer if they just play games, but for the sake of argument, please don't reply.

Now, let's say you're getting in a discussion with someone about games, and you ask them, "Have you played this game?" and they reply with "I haven't played any game in that franchise." Kinda makes me you go " You're not a gamer then!" Ever have that happen to you? Anyway, I think a gamer isn't a gamer if they haven't played at least one Castlevania game. It's a pretty popular enough franchise that I think everyone should experience.

Probably something from the Super Mario Bros. franchise, especially 1, 2, 3, or World.

MMh....In my case, I wouldn't say a franchise...but a system: The Atari 2600 ! :D . I wonder how many of the young gamers have felt an old fashioned control like the one from the Atari 2600. :) . Can't remember an atari 2600 franchise other than Namco.

Atari 2600.

Oh and I love Castlevania games ! I played Castlevania II on the NES ans SuperCastlevania IV on the SNES. :)

My first console was actually an Atari 800. :P We owned an Atari 5200, but never a 2600. I did game on my friend's 2600, though. Good times. And Super Castlevania IV will always remain my favorite Castlevania.

My Atari 2600 didn't have the fake wood panel. I feel cheated. As far as the topic, no I don't buy it Lucas. It almost sounds like an alternate perspective of the "hardcore vs. casuals" topics. People might say I'm not a real gamer just because I haven't played Devil May Cry or ***GASP*** haven't played a Zelda game since Link to the Past, nevermind that I've been a gamer all my life.

An Atari 800? "Does a quick google search" You owned me.... :P

The casual vs hardcore gamer argument is expected in here eh ? . That would depend largely on the age of the people posting here.

True, but that's just how I can see this thread going without some Gestapo-like moderation. Again, I see the point of the topic. I suppose there are many games that we could view as a rite of passage, but I think that gaming has exploded in variety and genre from our humble beginnings to the point where such conventions no longer exist.

And I would still look at someone like a leper for not having experienced Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Halo, etc.:P

Mario, quintessential gaming right there. You haven't played a Mario game? You're not a gamer, simple.

It is hard because everybody has there own taste in classics. I am an adventure game enthusiast, so I would say Monkey Island. I also love fantasy and roleplaying games, so I'd also say Elder Scrolls. I could go on and on: sandbox, Grand Theft Auto; sports, Madden; classic, Super Mario; FPS, Call of Duty. I feel like a gamer isn't a gamer if they haven't played the prominent series in their particular genre choice, but even that varies.

This isn't my intention, just so you know. I mean.. hell, if someone asks me if I've played a Pokemon game, I'd say no, and they'd say "How can you call yourself a gamer if you haven't played a Pokemon game!" It's more about surprise than it is hardcore vs casual. I'd appreciate it if the thread now come down to that.

I don't care if you've *played* the games or not, but I do think people should be able to recognize emblems of the gaming community. If you hear the Mario theme music and think "?", that's pretty bad. If you see Master Chief and think "?", that's also pretty bad. Being a gamer is less about engaging in the activity and more about understanding the culture. Little kids who sit around and play games all day and know all the big games are not necessarily gamers, while adults who have maybe 2-3 hours a week max to play games because they have families and jobs can still be gamers.

Probably Mario and Mario 3. I've played all the series that people have mentioned but I was never a fan of the old Castlevania games, SOTN, the 3D N64 one (not as much but I liked it), and what I have played of the GBA/DS games I have liked.

If you hear the Mario theme music and think "?", that's pretty bad. If you see Master Chief and think "?"

If it wasn't for the first Halo, I'd consider the second one to be lucky.

This is not the answer I'm looking for. Remember what I said, "for the sake of arguement." So let me rephrase the question then. What franchise do you honestly feel a gamer should experience?

I like to think a gamer would have experienced some form of RPG franchise. It doesnt have to be Square Enix, either.

If you haven't played Carnage Heart, you aren't a real gamer.

Using that indisputable logic, the number of gamers outside of Japan (where the franchise is popular) stands at just over 300.

Personally if you want to be considered a "true" gamer I would say you would have to atleast have played and beaten one game on every system.

A gamer is a gamer and there is no mandatory games that you have to play in order to consider yourself one. Is there anything mandatory in music?Or movies? It depends of what you like, and not what other people think it´s seminal or relevant in any genre. Anyway,it´s just my point of view,so...

ico and shadow of the colossus. You can be a 'gamer' playing games like Halo, Zelda even Fifa, but if you havnt touched something from Team Ico (or never even heard of them) then...well... its the biggest blasphemy of them all!

This is not the answer I'm looking for. Remember what I said, "for the sake of arguement." So let me rephrase the question then. What franchise do you honestly feel a gamer should experience?

Then you're justing asking what games you like, which clearly isn't the intent of the topic. Or you're asking what are the most popular games, which is also meaningless. It seems like a petty attempt to play up to a sense of superiority. "You don't know X, Y and Z? Pfft, casual." There are games in general I would recommend, but is there anything I'd say "Everyone, play this"? No.

I've never played a Mario game. And, guess what, it doesn't bother me. Plumbers aren't really that much of an interest to me. Well, the plumber in Freedom Fighters was cool, but he's an exception.

I was too young to experience the Atari and started getting into it with my older bro with the NES, but never really became a fulltime gamer until the SNES.

So with that said, the game that I think every true gamer should play is Super Mario Bros.

I strongly disagree with the whole idea behind the thread, but I'll play along for discussion's sake. If one has not played Shenmue then they are NOT a gamer!

Seriously though the closest thing I can think of would be if one hasn't at least tried more than two or three different genres then they haven't truly experienced much in the gaming world.

Of course not. Someone might not play X franchise because it's not to their fancy.

I also know many people that have played everything except Metal Gear. Doesn't mean that they're not gamers, simply means that haven't played any.
