Last year was flooded with sequels and FPS games and they years before it. What happened to the variety in video games where there were great games for everyone? I think there is a reason why the PS2 sold more than the 360 and PS3 combined.

What a stupid question. this is one of the best times to be a gamer. We have such great technology and dazzling games that are all pretty top quality.
The reason the PS2 did so well was the xbox only came out towards the end of it's life and the PS2 had no competition so most devs made games just for the PS2. It got very very lucky to have so many people making games for it. It had nothing got to do with the types of games themselves. people just had nothing else really
The only genre conspicuously absent is the JRPGDJ_LaeXenoblade: Chronicles Hailed as a major step forward for the genre. >_>
[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Xenoblade: Chronicles Hailed as a major step forward for the genre. >_>DJ_LaeBah, Europe doesn't count. :P I am picking it up the day it releases here though.
We do so count
I still play games made in the 90s .nedim100So do I. Though, at least I can admit when improvements have been made.
Nope. I think this gen his the best ever, for me. I can get almost every title I loved on the PS2 on my PS3 with better visuals. Also, all my PSone titles are playable on my PS3. I have, literally, tens of thousands of hours available for me to game. Same goes for my Wii. I have all my favorite games from the past downloaded from the virtual console.
I am skipping next gen because of the sheer amount of content available now and until this gen no longer gets new titles.
I usually don't comment on spelling mistakes... since I do them to... but LoosingEnds?... it's LOSING LOSING, not loosing... Other than that, I love you. What a stupid question. this is one of the best times to be a gamer. We have such great technology and dazzling games that are all pretty top quality.

P.S.: See I did it too, hence the edit.
no, video games are doing fine. i thought last generation was better, but this one is nothing to complain about. demon's souls and limbo are among my favorites in any generation.LoG-SacramentI'm in partial agreement. There are a plenty of things to about, most of them effects of the "casualmania" that all of the bad Wii Sports wannabes brought about. There were still some advances made, and there are a few legitimately good games, but are too many bad things happening to say that overall games have advanced, and those good games tend to get buried under a mountain of garbage.
Personally I dislike last year pc gamelist. Paradox's sengoku was a flop, there were few rpgs and most of them seem to be action oriented(?). There weren't that many RTS last year either...
Excuse my optimism and glass half full mentality, but...
The way I see it, gaming gets better with each passing day. With each new day, it is an even better time to be a gamer. The reason being, video games don't disappear. I can fire up my PS1 and play Final Fantasy if I feel like it. I can fire up an NES and play Contra with a friend if I so desire. These games exist, they aren't going anywhere. Lets say you prefer the 4th generation. Stock up on 4th generation consoles and games, have yourself a damn good time. The biggest misconception that gamers have is that you have to live and game in the present. There's no unwritten rule that says you must be confined to only playing new releases or games from this generation.
As far as I see it, with every passing day and with every new game release, gaming can only get better, it's literally impossible to become worse.
Nope. I love being a gamer as of now. I get to spend a bunch of my time with fantastic older games, and get to experience the fun of new releases. Win Win.
Nope.
Been playing since the 80's, I'm having more fun now than ever.
But I do get what you're saying, we have less VARIETY of playstyles than ever.
Basically everything now is cinematic 5 hour rollercoaster with arrow pointing to your next objective "Go this way and press X for something awesome"
Gone are the days when you need a PhD in RPG to finish one.
Gone are the days of spending the whole night playing Duck Hunt.
But that's all nostalgia.
There's still alot of awesome games out there.
Terrible time what are you smoking ? while i dont agree with the Wii or Iphone in terms of its games they paved the way for a more understanding of video games, video gamers are not considered basement dwelling virgins anymore. Plus the quality of games we can now make is mindblowing and is only going to increase.
I'm pretty happy with the overall selection of games. Sure there are tons (and tons and tons) of sequels these days, but there are more than a few new IP's out there if you look a little bit. About 50% of them get ignored or downright shunned by the gaming media, who are apparently so anxious to get back to playing MW3 online that they can't be bothered to actually play and write honest, thoughtful reviews of them. But the other half receive at least a modest amount of attention.
There's plenty of variety out there if you're not too lazy to look. XBLA, PSN, Wii VC, Nintendo e shop. Plus there are loads of great non-shooter games outside of the mainstream spotlight, and great games within mainstream gaming.
I don't know what you're talking about.

No.
well, life is changing, so are games, yes, nowadays high qualty game means either an FPS that sells a couple of dozens of millions, or a chalengeless-graphic-stunning game like Assassin's Creed and Uncharted. no one like searching for a key for an hour or begin the mission again if died anymore. that's the reality. so if you like challenge, your best bet would be on RPGs like souls, or arcade games like braid or meatboy.
Sure, the market has been and still is saturated with first-person shooters, but they are far from overbearing to a gamer. Off the top of my head, I could name BF3, Crysis 2, and a few others. On the other hand, there are plenty of non-FPS games to play. There are more non-fps games than fps games that I could think of off the top of my head from 2011. The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Batman Arkham City, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (PC), Dead Space 2, Bastion, To the Moon, Portal 2, LA Noire, Dark Souls, Dungeon Siege 3.. I could go on. All wonderful games. So, what were you saying again? ;)
Improvements in graphics and physics?Sure.Improvements in everything else?Nope.nedim100Care to elaborate on that substantial claim... or are those pink goggles comfortable?
The Tales of Series, Xenoblade, Last Story, Resonance of Fate, SMT series and spin offs (Persona, Devil Survivor, etc), Radiant Historia, etc.The only genre conspicuously absent is the JRPG
Yes and no.
The quality of today's games cannot be understated, but there's a large part of me that yearns for the past (and not all from nostalgia). I really, really miss 2D games. Seriously miss them. Yes, there are some games recently released (Rayman) and arcade titles that help, but it's not enough. I want to see Gradius and another 2D sprite based Metroid on consoles. Another Symphony of the Night. Streets of Rage. I find myself getting the most enjoyment from simple games on Arcade.....Renegades, Limbo, Meatboy, Shadow Complex, that Dishwasher Vampire one (can't remember the name). I think much of the enjoyment of what made gaming so great in the past has been overlooked: simplicity.
I also think other genres are far too neglected; mostly RTSes and simulations on PC. It's just I remember back in the day it seemed that many more developers took more risks. Now, 75% of all games on the market are FPSes. The quality of games is better today, but the variety and innovation is lacking.
At least the way I see it.
It's a wonderful time to be a gamer. Coincidentally, it's also a wonderful time to be alive. We sojourn amidst a green and growing day.
Yes. Absolutely horrible. There are just way too many high-quality games representing basically every known genre, and not enough money in my wallet, or time in the day to enjoy them all as much as they deserve.foxhound_fox
This represents my thoughts. So many games I want to play, so very little time.
I wouldn't say its a terrible time right now, but with rumours of the xbox 720 having forced Kinect intergration, I'm worried that eventually every next gen console will force us to use motion controls.
Then it will be a terrible time to a gamer. Well, a real gamer anyway... Not one of those soccer moms who play nothing but Wii-fit. They'll probably love it.
I strongly agree with this perspective.:D The classics will always be available to fall back on in the modern day, even better with that there are still so many i havent played.Excuse my optimism and glass half full mentality, but...
