"If all our games mirror games like Wii Sports or Wii Fit, our gamers would soon grow bored," said Iwata, in a recent interview published to Wii.com. Masahiro Sakurai, the creative force behind Kirby and Super Smash Bros., quickly agreed with Iwata.

Despite Nintendo's dominant popularity since Wii's release in November 2006, many long-time gamers have expressed concern that the added focus on mainstream consumers comes at the expense of fewer traditional games.

Nintendo on Thursday said its profits have doubled over the previous year, thanks to Wii's broad appeal. According to estimates, the company has sold 20 million Wiis worldwide, followed by 16.6 million Xbox 360s, and 9.4 million PS3s.

Well, at least he knows and admits it. Excessive mini-games can be a bad thing.

i just dislike buying a fifty dollar game that turns out to be a mixture of mini games where the entertainment lasts 5 hours.

Creating games that everyone can play and enjoy is good for sales sure but what Ninty must realise and correct before it is too late is that this industry lives of the cash of hardcore (or if you prefer "long-term")gamers who don't find the aspect of buying a console just for a few hours of mindless and simple gameplay.I own a Wii,I greatly enjoyed Wii Sports but since then I haven't found something really mature on the system (and I don't mean the humorous approach on "maturity" that No More Heroes offers) like Mass Effect or BioShock.Do somethig about it quickly Nintendo, not all of us like jumping on the heads of little monsters...

I think that is an old statement, I seem to recall reading it before and if so not a lot has been done about it. Either way this generation is still better than the N64 or GC gen as the games are still coming a little faster and 3rd party support is indeed better (even if not up to the standard of its competition). It is likely we will be getting some rpg's soon seeing how successful the Wii is in Japan and that will definitely keep me happy, but this generation for me is one were a second console is essential because Nintendo just aren't covering my needs :(.

The wii is still sorely lacking meaty action adventure games and rpg's. The only game on the wii I'm really interested in right now is super mario galaxy.

Well Nintendo kind of screwed themselves by making the Wii sooo underpowered, really. If it was at least CLOSE to the level of the other guys, they'd have plenty of hardcore games because they'd be getting ports of all the great multi-platform stuff. There's also a good chance that in that situation, the Wii would truly be the best system for shooters since it would be getting all the great modern FPS with awesome controls the likes of which can't be duplicated on other controllers. But since they can't get those games, they're stuck with Medal Of Honor Heroes as the flagship shooter. Its a cool game, but its no COD4 or Halo 3.

3rd-parties were forced to choose between making hardcore games that they can dual-release on PS3 and 360, or making a Wii game that may not sell. Even if developement costs are lower on WII, it still costs a lot to make a AAA hardcore game no matter what. Its a risk. That's why Nintendo-published games are going to continue being close to the only option for great hardcore games on Wii. Outside of last-gen ports like Bully and Okami.

Bottom line is Wii's power stops it from getting a decent amount of hardcore games.

I'm glad that they actually realize this fact. Hopefully now they can start releasing some good "non-casual" games *looks at No More Heroes* *thanks Suda 51 for developing on Wii* Now... I just need to phone Nintendo on Monday and get my Wii fixed.

I gotta admit that I bought the Wii for Brawl only. There are a lot of casual games its not even funny, some of these game look like cheap knock-offs. The only good titles so come from Nintendo not that many 3rd party games. The only 3rd party games that everyone likes so far is No More Heroes.

I've had a Wii for about 18 mnts and in the beginning it was fun. WII sports was entertaining while playing with the girlfriend, and i even played through Zelda, Resident Evil 4 , and Metroid Prime....possibly the best games for the system. I have since purchased Madden Football and The Rabbid Rabits game, latter for the g/f. but never play the system anymore. Like the others here, platformers arent my thing and eventhough Galaxy may be a fantastic game i for one will never play it. I need more adult content and even though the Wii is underpowered it can still provide descent graffics and wonderful gameplay(look no further then Prime)....there just isnt enough of them coming down the pipe unfortunately(not a mario analogy).

peace

Here's just what I own:

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Metal Slug Anthology
Bleach: Shattered Blade

With the exception of the last two (especially the last one), all of those are really great games, and the two REs and Z&W are from Capcom, a third-party. Then there's Wario Ware, SSBB, Sonic and the Secret Rings, No More Heroes, Medal of Honor, Endless Ocean, Okami, Bully, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (albeit gimped), and more.

That's more than enough for me on a console. Then again, I also game on PC and not everyone has my tastes. Still, I think the above lists are quite nice.

That really is a great list. And don't forget Trauma Center and Dragon Quest Swords that's coming.

But still, no matter how good those games are, with the exception of Nintendo first party like SMG and SSBB, it still feels like the Wii's focus is on the casual market first.

I agree with you there. Its library certainly needs expansion.

You know I was thinking of getting the Nintendo Wii but after it was released, problems reared their ugly heads. The color scheme of everything related to the wii (certain games, software, menu, and accesories) really lacks personality, and it's bland. The memory of the Wii is another major problem, releasing it without a real harddrive was a mistake, and games can't release their potential (last I checked you can make levels in SSBB, but they'll only be around for 24 hours, last I checked that is). And last would be the actually games being released on the Wii, if it's not a port or a spin off, it's some circus game or excercise game. I'm tired of people actually PRAISING this sudden trend of these bland games, put short I want the whole meal, not bread sticks. I think there have been only 2 original games that are a 'full meal', Metroid and Mario. I'm all of choices, I'm glad that now casual gamers are getting games they'd like, but not at the expense of traditional gamers being left out.

What I don't understand is that Nintendo just doesn't seem to be using the resources available to them.

It has access to so many excellent franchises or can appeal to developers to make proper spin-offs to "hardcore" games that would appeal just as much as their upcoming higher-end next-gen entries.

It's not like Nintendo doesn't have the cash nor the developer ties to form the partnerships......they are probably the most profitable company in the gaming industry right now.

They should work with Sega for a Skies of Arcadia 2 if they haven't already.

Forget about Final Fantasy spinoffs.....court Square Enix for a dedicated new franchise for the Wii.

Intelligent Systems is a top JRPG developer that is actually owned by Nintendo.....what are they working on......how about an Earthbound Wii game with them at the helm.

Resident Evil 5 may not come to Wii.....but rather then that lame "Umbrella Chronicles" game, why not instead make an Ada Wong game that is RE4-like but is an all new story that follow's Ada's other spy adventures.....hell, you could practically make a spin-off series.

Why don't they appeal to Team Silent to make an all new Survival Horror franchise.

BioWare is already working on a DS game, why not court them to make a new Wii exclusive franchise.

Ubisoft as a company doesn't seem to care about Wii......so instead focus on the developers within the company that do care about the Wii and have shown to be good at making games for it......when dealing with Ubisoft, Nintendo should focus on getting Michel Ancel to make exclusives for the system.

So basically, the Wii needs to be more like the DS. I think the problem is the devs aren't willing to put a solid effort into making Wii games. We know that Nintendo will make hardcore games, but what about third parties? The numbers are there, so why don't the devs make hardcore games? The Wii being underpowered doesn't mean anything, IMO. The DS is underpowered in comparison to the PSP, but look at the backing the DS has. Every major developer is on board.

Though the Wii would be great for a last gen system, consoles aren't left alone as much as handhelds when tech is considered. They are always compared to eachother and to the PC. In that regard, the Wii is severely underpowered, especially considering that the PC always gets ahead of consoles. My PC is probably better than a PS3 on the whole, and my processor and graphics card are something like 1.5-2 years old.
