Contra 4 is coming out soon and it is getting good reviews. This shows that there will always be room for old-school traditional gaming. But it can't stay that way forever. The 3D Contra's for PS2 were pretty good, but it didn't make a splash. So I think Konami should go the Metroid route and turn Contra into a next-gen alien killing FPS.

I think the foundation and groundwork is all there for a awesome alien killing game. And two-player co-op is a no-brainer. It can definitely work, granted Konami hires a good developer like Monolith to do it.

What does everyone else think?

A change could be interesting and all, but I think there are more then enough FPS games out there. If anything, Contra would probably get lost in the shuffle. If it weren't for all the other FPS games out there, I'd say it was a good fit.

i recon it should beside scrollingonly with sommet cool thrown in to make the series fresh, mebby a right analog controlled shoot anywear thing. And then with the gcon having a analog stick it could do thiswith a lightgun, throw in 3d graphics, coop online and srawling enviroments with guns all over it's a must buy!

Why? Sidescrollers are close to nonexistant while FPSs are drowning the market.

You maybe right about there being too many FPSs, but Contra needs a overhaul and the respect it deserves. I think a awesome FPS can make this happen, IF it's done right.

Just imagine the weapons this game can have using the clas-sic Contra weapons like the spreader, lasers, etc. It will look cool!

Personally I think it's on the right track with Contra 4. It just needed a new lease of life on the handhelds the same way Castlevania is getting. As it's already been pointed out, there is already an abundance of alien shooting FPSs.

Well, it makes sense, I think it does anyway.

You got two super soldiers. Check. Shooting game. Check. Aliens. Check. Futuristic sci-fi setting. Check. Huge insane bosses. Check. And awesome variety of weapons. Check.

And oh yeah, there are a lot of vehicles in Contra which means there could be some cool vehicle parts like in Halo and Half-Life 2.

Contra to me feels like if Bungie made Halo into a side-scrolling shooter. So a Contra FPS is exactly what this franchise needs.

making a contra fps wouldn't give cotra the respect it deserves, it would b an embarassment. I thing they should just make a side scroller with really high end visuals and put it on marketplace, their case closed

Nah, something like Lost Planet, keep the third person element. But yes, a 3d game would be logical for this time, regardless of the fans opinions, since well....That's not the nature of thebiz.

Ugh......Please don`t ever make Contra into a FPS. The Ideas great but someone else has done it already. Examples. Gears of War, Halo, Crysis...etc. I thought it would be cool if Capcom would have made Un Squadron into 3D and Namco comes along and makes the Ace Combat series. Or Capcom`s Mercs in 3D....well then we got Mercenaries. I don`t want to sound negative but there`s always other game companies using older game ideas to make new games.

If this were a poll thread, I would vote no. There are enough FPS series out there now (arguably too many). And Contra is as much an old school platformer as it is a shooting game. Platforming and FP are mortal enemies.

But I can understand that you want Contra to evolve. Such evolution isn't going to work by adopting an already well-worn approach.

Why is it that people (usually not fans) want an overhaul of a series to meet THEIR demands, simply find another series or genre (fps? shouldn't be hard to find) that meets your demands, while the fans of contra can play the game that has established itself as a sidescroller action game. This is just like Resident Evil 4, it attracted another fan base while alienating the established fanbase that liked the original gameplay. I don't like Virtua Fighter because it's to tactical for me, and I'd like it to be a little less tactical, but the whole reason people buy VF is BECAUSE of the fighting mechanics. Why must people act like there is only one gaming series in the world? there are hundreds of games, surely there is one game that suits your needs.

1- metroid was about discovery, the fps view only helped with that aspect. 2- fps, is over done and with the exception of a few games always is awful 3- contra has nothign to do with fps. there is no possible simlarity. its about frantic shooting in all directions, somethign which cant be doen on a fps. 4- lets not forget the rubbish attempt at a story they would no doubt put in. 3d upgrades arnt always best, look at earth worm jim or sonic, altered beast and the fps version of C&C. other times they certianly work metroid and duke nukem. street fighter is a fine example of a 2d series, and although it needs updating, making it like tekken isnt the anwser.

Why would Contra need an overhaul? They tried several different things, and anything that deviated from sidescrolling shooter ended in failure. Contra is Contra. Let it be! There's too many FPS games out there anyway. That's why Konami had Contra IV go back to its roots... and they're saying it's the best one in quite a long time.

To each his/her own, but why not?

I think it would be great! I didn't say don't do traditional Contra anymore, I just made a notion that a killer Contra FPS would be awesome...IF done right.

I'm going to pick up Contra 4 so don't think I'm discounting that. But what I'm saying is Contra as a first-person shooter can work. People were going crazy when Nintendo announced Metroid would be a FPS and look how that turned out. ;)

So I see the same potential in Contra. I think Contra is very American. The early Japanese Contra posters were obviously inspired by American action movies of the 80's. So a FPS is a perfect match.

I can see some games morphing into first person shooters (Alien Syndrome springs to mind) and still keeping the faith with the old games, but Contra (which boasts a lot of jumping/platforming) doesn't really fall into that category.

Sure, Contra's popularity isn't what it was, but that is an argument for staying the same. If the name Contra inspires yawns among all but a few, why bother to slap said name onto an fps?

Konami should make a true Contra game for PSN/XBL and offer up a demo to give people a taste of what they have forgotten.

They could make a 3rd-Person Shooter spinoff, but not an FPS. There are simply too many out there.

How about Sin & Punishment style gameplay. It would work even better with a Wii-mote for aiming and nunchuck for moving.

I don't know about that. Personally I think 2.5D is about as far as I'd like to see Contra go. I loved Shattered Soldier on the PS2.

No they shouldn'tbut...

Here is a list of what a next-gen Contra should look like

Graphics: Cell Shaded, or in 2.5 (As Archy said)

Genre: Action/Rpg within a 2D sidescrolling world

Modes: Co-Op & Versus, Online Co-Op & Versus, Some Kind of Time Attack Mode also

Gameplay: Same old contra, but with an exhuastive list of upgradeable weapons/costumes/armor/skills (100's or so would be nice), and of course even more epic boss fights.

Basically I'd want the game to play like a next-gen sidescrolling version of the Megaman Legends series.

im with you but no one seems to want to take the plunge on a next gen 2.5D game. castlevania, sonic, and contra could all benefit, but i think someone smaller is going to have to come along and do it successfully before an established franchise is going to take the risk.

We don't need another generic first-person shooter. Contra works best as a side view run-and-gun game. Previous attempts to bring the series into 3D have not gone over well. I don't think turning Contra into an FPS, already an extremely crowded genre, will help.

If they made a Contra game with 3D models and whatnot, but retained the cIassic 2D gameplay like in New Super Mario Bros. or Castevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, I'd be okay with that.

problem #1... the Japanese suck at making first person shooters. this means they have to license out their IP in the hopes that someone might do it justice. This might work with a comapny like Nintendo that can take a hit if the game doesn't work out... but Konami?

problem #2... like everyone else said, the genre is way too saturated with this kind of stuff, even as a third person shooter I dont see how it could be original and keep the contra style.

Some games are better off in 2D and will never make the transition... it's as simple as that.

Well, I was thinking in the lines of Konami collaborating with a good westerndeveloper to make the Contra FPS like the way Sega is doing with Sonic and Capcom with Bionic Commando. And remember Konami is making the next numbered Silent Hill game with a western dev.

And, by the way, did you know that Contra 4 was developed by a western developer? ;)

ASK_Story

your points make little sense in this context.

1. a western dev working on the next silent hill doesn't matter much. the game already had it's fanbase and is much more of a hit than the last bunch of Contras... there's really nothing to lose here.

2. Capcom generally produces better games and is a more financially sound company than Konami... Capcoms stocks are doing very well... they have a few blockbusters lined up... they can take a hit from a failed experiment better than Konami can

3. Contra 4 already has it's planning and ground work laid out for it. Konami doesn't have to pay much for this dev to develop and plan hardly anything as it's staying like it always has been. Switching the game to FPS would take a year or two in development time alone (if they plan on doing it right) and I don't think Konami's up for footing the bill on a series that has a very small fanbase.
