does anybody look at the preview of a bad game to see how the prewviews did not catch the problems of the game. its kinda wierd cuz like everygame gs previews seems like its a great game and then bam its horrid. not dissing gs or anything cuz if they werent real i would not be here but do devs like make the demo of a game better then the final copy to generate hype??

not saying that all games that have good previews are bad cuz you know GoW FF12 Resistance and so and so are awesome but still its pretty wierd

I think it's kind of funny sometimes how off the previews can be. :P I haven't looked at it, but I wonder what the preview for Daikatana contains...

Yea, they hyped Brothers in Arms DS it seemed like, but it received a 6.0, which sucks. I bought the game too before i read the review, and it really deserves a much higher score, at least an 8.0. I've never disagreed with a review so much.

Go play a PSP game. GS reviews for PSP games are awful, ask anyone who plays a good variety of games on the PSP. I've had serious problems with multiple games, they judge them as if they were PS2 games, it's ridiculous.

And they judge Wii games on Xbox 360 standards. Hell, they do the same for VC.

Yeah the preview section has very little journalistic integrity. I don't think I've seen a single preview for a game that said anything even remotely close to "well this game has a long way to go..."

but it's like this way with every site... I guess they're worried that if they preview games too hard, they won'y be allowed to preview them any longer.

Well its just a preview so they dont want to say "wow this game blows a$$ so hard". You can tell if its a bad game from GS previews because they always have atleast one derogatory sentence about the game.

Do you want a preview to tear apart an unfinished game? What good would that do? Often that is not the game that you end up playing. Such a preview easily could be entirely inaccurate as a finished game could address most if not all present issues. I think it is just understood that previews are descriptions of an unfinished game and thus you really can't draw many conclusions about the final quality of the game, rather it is just there to describe what components there are.

The problem is that they have no qualms about stating things they like about the game. They may as well point out the faults if they're going to do that; it's not as if we don't know it's a preview and not a review.

I think it is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation where if you slam a game for missing something... there's a good chance that will be fixed anyway and what good is that preview to anyone? Mentioning what is good :so far" seems to be the best route to me as that likely will still be in the final game. Is it a perfect solution, no but it isn't a review and the game is unfinished... there's no way to review the game before it is done ;)

I think we should also consider that previews are often select portions of the game that are provided by the developer. They're not going to show the previewer absolute crap...

That is not to say it is all sunshine. I have seen previews point out negatives, what was unfinished in the game they played, and what promised features they didn't see at all. I've also seen plenty of previews that don't take much (if any) reading between the lines to find plenty of warning.

Previews aren't "bad" mostly because the game isn't finnished yet and there is still time for a lot of immprovement.

And they judge DS games as if everyone has to be as innovative as Elite Beat Agents or Nintendogs. As an owner of a PSP and DS I can honestly say there is no way in hell the PSP should have more AAA's or AA's then the DS, not saying that the PSP is bad it's good and all, but the DS is just awesome. As for the Wii, while I disagree with the scores I agree with it's place, it really isn't that good right now, but the VC is amazing though.

But to be honest we all should know being long time gamers that reviews=garbage.

I mean how does Odin Sphere not get AA, but Kingdom Hearts does is beyond my imagination.

ThefirstKHwasamazing, evenifitdidhaveatonofdownpoints, how KHII managed to score higher then the first is what really bugs me, everything that was good about the original was gone in the second.

Lets see.... hummm... Ok lets look at Bethesda's press preview for Fallout 3.

Source: The Washington Post

(The company flew in about 60) "writers in from as far away as Australia and Japan to give them an early look at the company's Fallout 3, scheduled for release late next year.
In addition to an hour-long demo and chats with the game's designers, the trip included a two-night stay in downtown's swank Helix Hotel, dinner at Logan Tavern and a private party at a nightclub in Adams Morgan. Airfare, hotel, food, drinks and shuttle bus were provided, courtesy of Bethesda Softworks. Although a few attendees paid their own way, most did not."

How many bad Previews do you think came out of that little party?

Another quote from the same article.

"With this type of investment to recoup, Hines said, his job is to whet the appetites of gamers, and that process starts with getting the press salivating. To build interest in the upcoming Navy SEAL game Rogue Warrior, for example, the company flew writers to Las Vegas, where they visited a firing range and tried sniper rifles and AK-47s."

See where this is going? It isint like its some big secret, every industry does it.

Now if a company were to just Fed-EX's a pre release copy of a game to everyone and say "have at it" you might get a little more honest preview but their never going to do that and even if they did I still wouldent count on the preview being too harsh. After all you don't want to bite the hand that feeds you until the product hit's the hands of the other people that feed you. That would be us consumers. 8) That's when its time to tell the truth or at least try to.

If the gaming industry does not thrive then the video game press/media industry does not thrive.
It's as simple as that.

Well, I have a test I use on magazines that you can use on websites. If you see a nice positive preview for a game then take a look around the website at the banners. Are they related to that game or publisher in any way?

You can go through any gaming magazing and the game that has the big 5 page preview probably has a 2 page ad some where in the magazine.

I definitelypreferpreviews that are honest with the material. It is possible to say "they have a long way to go" or "we encountered problems that will need to be corrected" and still be positive about expectations.

Previews are garbage an annoy the hell out of me when the game gets hyped beyond belief and then gets rated like a 2.0 yeah...good work. I stick to trailers and some developer interviews to stay knowledgeable on the game but dont hold any weight regarding buying decision on previews.

Isnt the most likely scenario one in which the various testers and sites such as GS are given only parts which are 'good' or show intense promise??? I hardly think developers would show them the parts they know wouldnt be any good

And as mentioned they base is on the fact that they are unfinished

Finally a very decent unconventional thread!

It would bebad practice for a writer to give a game a bad preview. How many of you would even bother to give a game a look if it has a negative preview? The closest to a not so good preview I have ever read was when the writer, after having some time with the game demo, suggests the game needs more work to contend with other existing games. So it is all about hype, hype which means marketing. They are actually helping us (keeping us informed)and the game developers (to push their product to us)at the same time.

You can pretty much tell whether a game's good or not by the tone of GameSpot's preview.

For example, check out the last paragraph from the latest preview of Hellgate: London...

"...Flagship has even more unusual quests in mind, including at least one that blends elements of real-time strategy into it, though we'll have to learn about those later. Still, Hellgate: London is turning out very nicely. Like Diablo, it's the kind of game that makes running around and killing demons seductively easy and compelling. The fact that you can do so in single-player or in cooperative multiplayer makes the game even more tantalizing."

You can pretty much tell this game's going to be a winner. If a game's bad, GS won't say anything bad outright, but they won't sound enthusiastic about the game either.
