EDIT: Sorry folks

Update: A statement released by Official Nintendo Magazine reads:

The details printed in Official Nintendo Magazine 21 regarding Mario Kart Wii were healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an official announcement from Nintendo.

"We are sorry if we have mislead anyone. We do not set out to mislead our readers. ONM apologises profusely for any misunderstandings that this has caused.
Update ends

Original story: As Reggie told a crowd of journalists at E3 earlier this year to "wait and see" how many players would be on the course at once in the new game, a trailer behind him clearly showed 12 karts lined up on the starting grid, as NGamer rightly pointed out in this huge preview.

The latest ONM sheds some light on what we can expect from the latest entry of the series, including the online side of things...

The latest edition of ONM reveals some information concerning the latest Mario Kart title, which is heading to the Wii early next year. When it was first announced, it was also claimed that the game would feature online Wi-Fi play, like it's predecessor - which launched Wi-Fi for the DS, including those friend codes...

ONM have stated that the popular battle section of the game would in fact feature 16 online player battles so people can duke it out to see who is number one. Players will also be able to pull stunts in mid-air, though it is not yet known if it will help game-play in a specific way, for instance avoiding those pesky blue shells.

And if you thought that wasn't enough, all the tracks that are available on the DS version of the title will also be available in the game, as well as brand new tracks. Gamers will be spoilt for choice. Not much else is known about the online mode at the moment, though we're clinging on to the hope that the friend codes might somehow be alleviated...

Here's hoping the DS tracks will be spruced up a bitbefore being included in the Wii game.

I second that on the DS tracks. I just hope they don't port tracks like they did with the retro-tracks on the DS.

But other than that, I think Mario Kart Wii can be even bigger than Super Smash Bros. Brawl all because of the online play. This could well be the Wii's most successful game. I know if I had it, I'd never put the controller...um, excuse me...Wii-mote, down. :P

As for what I want personally is lots of tracks, original ones, not just recycled or mirrored. The game should feel like a whole complete game with plenty of original tracks. And any recycled tracks should just be the cherry on top of the cake, not the icing. The icing should be more original tracks.

I thought it was confirmed in the trailer that Yoshi Falls looks way better than it did on DS?

ONM sucks, NOM was much better in my opinion.but thats not the point

even if it was true i dont think the wii would be able to handle 16 players online racing, for other racing games maybe but MK? no way. the place would pretty much be a colourful warzone  but more impotantly think of the number of people getting that blue shell? the first person will be bullied until he is in last place.

and then the snakers... i wouldnt mind 16 players but i think they would need to tone the game down abit to make it playable.

Why not? MOH2: Heroes has a 32 player online mode on Wii and on PSP. Mario Kart 16 player would be mayhem, but really fun.

thats exactly why. a regular racing game, the wii would have handled it no problem (assuming devs bother to do it right) but for MK i think it would be too hectic. imagine brawl 8 player, think how much chaotic that would be.

so umm were just pretending that nothing was said, right? anyway on a side note, sadly, nintendo still feels they know what we want for an online model more than we do. in the recent game informer they interviewed reggie, and they are still beating the same drum. when are they going to realize that the wii needs online the same way that it is being utilized on the other consoles?

It's probably that they said that reporting it as solid facts, Nintendo contacted them saying they shouldn't have given away the information, they pretended it was speculation.

Something like that.

SuperMooseman

Eh, from what I've been told, ONM has more or less lied in the past, though I'm not sure exactly what the circumstances were regarding what they said.

I'm not really worried about the online model for Mario Kart, because outside of snaking (which really was just a general game design matter than anything else), it worked well enough for what I wanted to do, and Nintendo has shown some degree of forward momentum regarding their online models in the case of something like Mario Strikers.

I don't care how many players you can have, I'm just looking forward to some mario kart online. I'm hoping we eventually get a Mario Party online as well, that would be nuts!

Arrgh. Why does Nintendo still seem so hesitant to bring their games online?

Anyway I sure hope Mario Kart for the Wii does include online because that would be awesome. So many of Nintendo's games are just screaming for incredible online fun.

Mario Kart /will/ have online, this is the official word on the game as of the E3 Press Conference. What isn't certain is how many people you'll be able to play against online, though I thought the number was suppose to be around 12 people...not sure where I heard that from, but as of this stage, Nintendo's official word is that Mario Kart Wii will be online.

Ah that is very good to hear. Teh interwebs, they can be so confusing. :P

Yeah 12 player online seems to ring a familiar tone for me like I've heard it somewhere before.
