[QUOTE="nVidiaGaMer"]Appreciate the game for what it is. The games all have top notch voice acting, amazing cinematics, and crazy story lines. Even if you don't like MGS you should give it credit for trying things no other games have.dvader654
YEAH, you tell them... those... uh, who?
You can add me to the list raises a greasy paw \^^^/ I'm still going to buy it, who knows maybe I will like it this time~

Who would play Zelda when there was MGS in 1998?
Aww crap, now its on.
Snap son!!! No he didn't!
This topic is pointless....
I don't hate MGS, but i don't appreciate it either.

Why bother posting in a pointless topic saying its pointless? -__-
The only MGS haters in my experience are fanboys trolling in SW. Even though I am by no means a fan of the series, I do respect the work and creativity Kojima puts into his games. PBSnipes
Whats SW?
I think almost everything about MGS is extraordinarily well done: the attention to detail in every aspect, amazing visuals, good voice acting, cool gadgets, etc. But I absolutely hate the story (well, ever since after MGS1); it is unnecessarily convoluted and absurd. Some of the characters are also way too out there for my tastes. Octopus lady? A robotic wolf? Some dive bombing bird? Liquid's arm that controls Ocelot? Maybe it's a Japanese thing, but it's way too out there for my tastes.
And what does all of this nonsense accomplish? Does it really add to the point that Kojima is trying to get across, or is it just in there for the "cool" factor? I honestly can't derive a point out from under all of the heaps of dialogue, unnecessary characters and sub-plot twists, especially when all are combined at once. If MGS stuck a bit closer to a plausible alternate reality, it would be awesome. As it is, it just comes off a bit too humorous and I can't take it seriously when I have a robot dog barking at me with octopus lady shoving all of her legs down my throat.

I agree. My fav. is metal gear solid 1 as well but the thing about mgs2 story being convoluted... well it's not really convoluted. It's like any conspiracy theory story where governments try to control people with money and technology and they monitor the tinest things. The oceliquid's arm was a black dot in the series. If I were Kojima, I'd remove it. But mgs2 is more real than mgs1 in some points.
As for the octopus, it's just a gear and I'm sure in military there are far more advnaced things which we still haven't heard of.
Its A Great series, Its Cheesy beyond belief, But I Still think they're great games :)andalore
cheesy for introducing Raiden when it was a shock to mgs fans? or having to switch controllers in pyscho mantis' bossfight? or the end's bossfight? Or having CQC? Or dual shooting system? Look cheesy and metal gear don't meet.

Very well said. :)
MGS sucks. High production values, but shallow gameplay and pathetic story telling. It's outdated gameplay wrapped around the worst movie ever made.

You haven't played any mgs game obviously.
The story-telling isn't pathetic and the game-play isn't shallow nor outdated. Anyone who played mgs games would know that well. MGS and Uncharted are among the few games which allow you to shoot in two modes and more* and max payne since those are the only games I've played where you can do that*. MGS4 features 3 different shooting modes. MGS also has a combat system which was improved in mgs3. I could go on about mgs features but MGS simply redifined the stealth genre.

I didn't like any MGS game before until I played MGS3: Snake Eater, and was impressed. One thing I don't like; the controls - it's really hard to slightly tilt the left analog stick to stalk behind enemy to get a grapple.jamestabangThat's why it's easier to stalk by pressing the d- pad left or right. You permantely stalk slowly if you use the d-pad instead of the left analog stick.

Hey, I never knew about this! I'll try it soon. Thanks so much for this, SOL1D_SNAKE :)
I don't like the game because I don't care about the story, and the actual game is pretty meh to me. I much rather like other stealth games such as Splinter Cell or Theif, though from the gameplay vids of MGS4, it looks pretty fun and rivals the Splinter Cell series.greenghost123
Metal gear doesn't rival splinter cell series. Metal gear IS better than splinter cell series. Although SC is more realist but it's boring. SC copied mgs after a spoof in the early teaser of mgs4 but mgs4 didn't copy SC.

Because?.....
Anyways I believe Splinter Cell is better because it gets the stealth mechanics right, the camera is better oriented for stealth, AI is better, more moves to help you sneak around and all around better level design. Metal Gear Solid is simply a joke when it comes to stealth. If you didn't like sneaking around, then you didn't have to in Chaos Theory, you could run and gun and throw stealth out of the window as long as you did the main objectives to proceed. Splinter Cell is simply the better game series, who cares if it wasn't the first stealth game? It does it better.
I don't hate the game, but I certainly don't like it.summer_star17x

Simply put Splinter Cell would not exist if MGS never came out. MGS is the father of stealth games.

its more realistic to me. you're a hitman. how cool is that? you can change your outfit to fit into the crowd and have many different weapons to kill people with.
my favorite is the fibre wire.
i think poisoning a drink or rigging a barbeque and watching your victim blow up is much more fun than hiding in the grass.

I played every MGS game, even if I couldn't finish force myself to finish #3.
The story in the game is wordy and extremely cheesey. Listening to 5 minutes of inane talk between people every time I save the game is not my idea of fun. What's bad about the story? Everything...including a Fat guy on roller blades, spraying hair spray to defuse bombs, comic book eletricity shooting cheese enemies. The worst thing about the story is not just how bad it is (alot of games have bad stories), but how much time they take showing it to you. They actually think that it is good, but it's painful.
I'm not against a big story either....I like the Final Fantasy games. They blast you with long cut scenes, and can definitely be cheesey, but it's actually done fairly well. That is NOT the case with MGS....the story is bad in every way.
The characters are shallow and boring. Snake has a mullet, smokes cigarettes and looks like he came from a trailer park. It's borderline racist that this is some Japanese game designer's view of an American character. Oh, and Snake is the 'cool' character, lets not get started onRaiden.
The gameplay elements are pretentious if not just outdated. In Metal Gear you hide in closets and under boxes, while games like thief and Splinter Cell have used lighting and real cover for years. MGS's gameplay really hasn't changed since the PS1 era. I'm not a fan of Splinter Cell, but its 'stealth' elements actually make sense.
Finally, the whole series rides on hype. MGS 2 sold twice as many as MGS 3.....so there were obviously alot of disappointed people. Compare that to a game like Halo, also overhyped, but Halo 2 sold alot more than Halo 1 and Halo 3 is on track to way outsell #2.
Just my opinion though....

I wouldn't say the Splinter Cell gets it all right, but the series gets it mostlyright. Whether its the better game in the series is where I would have to strongly disagree. I don't really know if one series can truly be rated higher than the other as both bring something positive of their own to the table.
Many people don't like SC because it's a more realistic stealth game and just for that reason. Oh yeah, and Ubi Soft's fascination with including "badittude" into a series just for the sake of marketing appeal doesn't help either.

While of course everyone is entitled to their opinion if we cannot debate and argue against their opinions on things then there is no point in having form of discussion. Just becase people are entitled and have their own view of things, doesn't mean they can't or shouldn't be chanllenged in fact I think the opposite holds true, especially if there is to be any form of conclusion to a discussion. Obviously ignoring what other people have to say isn't the way to do things either.

Eh? I completely disagree with your sentiment, having beaten all three games multiple times (and owning multiple versions of the game, including Twin Snakes). Most of the stories have always managed to achieve the perfect balance between reality and science fiction, with enough HUMOUR thrown in to make things interesting (if you don't enjoy the series humour, that doesn't make it cheesy).
You says whats bad about the story, listing Fatman, the bomb difussing mission and Volgin, while clearly omiting some of the most breath taking scenes from the game. Snake jumping off from the Brooklyn Bridge, Gray Fox fight with Metal Gear Rex, the Halo Jump in Snake Eater, not to mention some of the BEST bosses both in terms of design and character design from any game, The End, Psycho Mantis, Fortune, Gray Fox, just to name a few.
Hate the game all you want but credit, where credit is due. MGS has created some of the most iconic and prolific characters in video game history together with an increadible mythos and excellent bosses. To focus on elements or characters you may not like is to ignore the whole series for what it is.
Characters shallow & boring? I suppose thats what you get when you don't have the attention span to listen to the codec sequences or even watch the cutscenes. Again I suppose someone like the Master Chief or Sam Fisher are somehow deeper characters... please? Games like MGS3 fleshed out the characters beyond anything Splinter Cell or Halo have ever done and have raised both moral and ethical questions that far surpass the scope of what one might consider to be found in any video game.
Also if you knew anything about the inspiration for the design and creation of the character you would know that he is based on many American block buster action heroes/movies, the most prominent being Kurt Russell from Escape from New York. I suppose Sam Fisher obviously a way cooler and less stereotypical hero? Not to mention the character depth portrayed by Snake and his various incarnations make him anything BUT a stereotype.
Also pretentious gameplay? I'm sure that just making sure your meter shows that your hidden in light or dark, is much more advanced than what any MGS game could hope to achieve... please. Sons of Liberty bosted some of the most advanced and FUN interactive AI seen in a video game when it came out and the gameplay has always managed to be FUN and accesible, allowing for any st-yle of gameplay you want to impose on yourself. Want to run and gun? Go for it? Want to stealth through without killing a single enemy? Bam, done!
Also you compare MGS2 to MGS3, fair enough quite a few people were dissapointed with MGS (for whatever reason), however the series has still managed to maintain itself as one of the strongest selling franchises around, with a rabid fanbase and a following that would do most games shame. You compare to Halo which is THE biggest selling game the Xbox has to offer, apples and oranges.
Yes you do have an opinion and you are entitled to it, but its based on a narrow minded perspective of the game as a whole with an obvious deficit regarding the games goals and aims, not to mention the overall mythos surrounding it. You choose to ignore and avoid those points of the game which you think don't support you argument. MGS isn't for everyone, but to lay such shallow negatives against it, is to not see the game for what it is, and it is different things to different people and something much more prolific in the grand scheme of things than say Splinter Cell. Its like trying to compare Mario to any other platformer...

Gameplay: Splinter Cell --> Metal Gear Solid
Story: Metal Gear Solid --> Splinter Cell
That's my opinion in a nutshell. But to elaborate, I appreciate and respect MGS for all the things the topic creator stated, but I seriously feel that the gameplay of MGS 3 was outdated. I hated how the game switched between third-person and first-person views when you went prone or wanted to aim your gun, and I never understood why they couldn't just stick with one view. Fans of the game will probably say that it was to better immerse you in the experience, but I'll counter that by saying that if that's what Kojima tried to achieve, he should've gone for first-person all the way. But that's just my opinion.
So yes, I appreciate and even like MGS for things such as story, sound and voice acting, but the gameplay (or rather, the controls) is in dire need of an update. And I'm hoping that with numero 4 they will finally get that right because if they do, then it'll be an absolute A+ game.
Whenever people start talking about stealth games and how MGS redefined the stealth genre, I feel the need to post the truth!
Way back in 1998, MGS hit the Playstation and was a huge hit. Being sneaky wasn't something that gamers were used to at the time, and making a whole game where the main character couldn't just kill everybody in site was a change of pace.
However, that same year, Thief came out on the PC. It wasn't nearly as popular, but it was the game that nailed down what it means to be a stealth game. Where MGS deals with vision cones and soldiers who forget you were even there in a minute, Thief had you take into account the lighting of a room, the kind of floor you moved across, and how fast you moved across it. Add in the awesome (for the time) AI that would hunt you down in the shadows and some fantastic, non-linear level design, and even a level where you must infiltrate a building in a disguise like in Hitman, and you have the foundation of the modern stealth genre. Splinter Cell may appear to share more in common with MGS since both feature heroes who are super spies with a high-tech arsenal, but under the surface, Splinter Cell aspires to play more like Thief than MGS.
Appreciate the game for what it is. The games all have top notch voice acting, amazing cinematics, and crazy story lines. Even if you don't like MGS you should give it credit for trying things no other games have.nVidiaGaMer
people have a right to voice their opinion about a game weather you like it or not.
