Neither. I think its level of appreciation is just right. There are some people that don't know about it or care for it, buts its got a pretty large, dedicated fanbase. Having MGS4 hyped to GTAIV levels would just make the game seem more pretentious when the hype eventually dies down.Silent-Hal
That is most likely the best comment i have ever recived or heard in a while, mabey your right it has a good balance were it stands.
I have been disliking MGS before for being overrated.
But when I played MGS3, I knew then why it is a popular and highly rated game. Simply one of the best games ever made.
This is by far the most highly overrated game there is.
Bad story, shallow gameplay and overrated graphically. Just play the MGO beta to see. It's a slow, clunky shooter that's nearly impossible to aim.

The story is bad....just real bad, and that's a fact. You can like it, but it doesn't change this fact.
The game mechanics haven't really evolved since the PS1 days. In MGS you hide in closets, while games like Splinter Cell and Thief have been using light & sound for years. MGS 3's additions....camo, hunting, etc....were weak. You have every right to like it, but just judging the mechanics....this game has been surpassed and outdated since MGS2.
You can like the game. A lot of people like it. I just think the reason all these people like it is cause they are impressed with the production values (the money that went into the game) and not the end result.
Combine all the attention it gets with the end quality.....that's why it's overrated.
Or, imagine if the MGO beta was a demo version of a no name game......no one would give it a second chance. It's that bad. It's a slow, clunky shooter....where you can't aim at anything.
Halo is overrated, but you can bet that more people will be playing Halo 2 online in a couple years than MGO online.

I completely agree.

It's really hard to have a conversation with someone who gets opinions and facts confused with each other. It's not a "fact" that the story is bad, it's only a fact that it doesn't appeal to you.
I tried MGS2 and I laughed at how awful it was. Maybe it is just not my cup of tea. Maybe it is overrated. :PGSU28
Silly? No my friend. The dangers of slippery pigeon poop is serious business, and only Hideo Kojima has had the courage to tackle this very real and deadly issue.
I've grown sick of peoples opnions on games. They are always like "this game is bad becasue its story sucks, its gameplay sucks etc". You respond well I really enjoy the game and that person responds again with "DOESNT CHANGE THE FACT THAT IT SUCKS". Constant stating of your opinion as it facts makes my head want to explode.
Heya,
I like the metal gear series i just like all the features like the hiding and camoflauge and i think the story was confusing and took me about 3 explination to understand because of the way each game was brought out.
I personally like the game and enjoy playing it. As for MGO beta i think it's awesome ^^. I think it's easy aiming and nice controls. Maybe slow at the start because you have to level up your speed but i dont care :P.
The finding snake mission is most fun and hilarious that you can use most of the features from the metal gear game in online situations.
(May be off the point to the topic)
But i like MGS. 3 was my favourite and i'm looking forward to MGS4!! Looks sexy, the features are sexy, snakes voice is sexy and the overall gameplay is sexy
Metal Gear Solid was perhaps the second best selling game in the history of videogames but before that it wasn't given great scores which means it was underrated. Metal Gear Solid 2 had the right ratings. Metal Gear solid 3 was underrated too because it was one of the best looking games on the playstation 2 along with Resident Evil 4 and it pushed the console to its limits yet it didn't get the right score. The story of metal gear series is very politically charged and anyone who bashes it has simply failed to grasp the point of it. gamingqueen
I do agree number three:snake eater had allot of politics in it and a very long twisting storyline but despite all the politics of war they still kept many busy with it's slit throat game play..hehe my favorite way to take out some pesky guards..but yes you relay cant trash a storyline that is all about "war politics" i mean its tricky to do and i find most people who hate the storyline, hate it because it takes up precious killing spree time.

Not that my English is superb either but I didn't fully understand what you said. Perhaps the game-play wasn't revolutionary but there were other ways to take out guards in mgs3 including CQC. CQC didn't only include slitting throats as you could knock off the guards, twist their ribs and chauk them. Along with CQC, you had a good variety of guns and items to use to kill guards as well as other tricks to distract them.
I think they are great but probably overrated somewhat. At least the previous games were. The controls are and have always been cumbersome, the games are never that long and are only challenging on the hardest difficulty and for the most part have been the same game in a different location with updated graphics. Not true.
MGS had many additions over MG2 and MG2 had many additions over MG and so on. MG2 included A.I., dialougs, radar, life bar, more weapons and more moves. MGS was 3D, cut-scenes, voice acting, stealth tricks like using the box, flattering against a wall, crawling, CQB, thermal goggles, stealth camoflauge, new and improved radar and more weapons. MGS2 had first person shooting and katana fight. MGS3 had camo system, stamina system, CQC, chase sequence and more weapons.

exactly.
i'm tired of dumbs... if you are a kid that cant comprehend what is told, just play mindless shooters for your taste. also MGS is not a shooter game, thats additional feature.
i also think its not overrated nor underrated. its more than satisfying for fans and thats more than enough
Very underrated. Halo gets so much more attention while the single player in MGS has always been a billion times better, and a billion times better written.TallicaFan2005
halo was the only fps on xbox, so its natural. leave the kids alone, they didnt see any real game. halo shlouldnt be compared to MGS, it should be compared to FPS games and real FPS games are on PC.

MGS2 was the black sheep of the Solid storyline, yet it was scored the highest by critics. Imaginary fingernails still run down a chalkboard in my head when I see a review for Sons that is higher than Snake Eater. Compared to Snake Eater, Sons was a huge, huge letdown. Not for the new mechanics it introduced, but for the janky storyline. Snake Eater had the mechanics from Sons, mated with the best story in the series. It was truly Kojima's swan song, and I'm more than a little apprehensive that he won't be able to match it with MGS4.
And while I agree with you on Snake Eater, I couldn't disagree more about it being merited by graphics. Snake Eater was the best game in the series for a multitude of reasons above and beyond its visuals (which were gorgeous). I've played a lot of gorgeous games that were snooze-fests.

MG2 actually had a lot of those. You could use a box and crawl, and had thermal goggles. MGS took a LOT of game mechanics and items from MG2 .
Which was the one where you fight PyschoMantis and he affects your controller?
That was the last one I played. I thought it was pretty good as far as graphics and gameplay. But I haven't been able to find myself drawn to future MGS titles. I suppose there's just something lacking. Perhaps originality or innovation, I'm not sure.

Quite the contrary, I felt that the storyline of MGS3 didn't even match the standards set out by MGS2.

I won't get started on it, because I could go on for about 362 pages on why MGS2's story was a mixture of the final Matrix flick and a bad Hendrix trip. So instead I'll just say: Yeah, NO.

Ditto.
But about how the MGS2 storyline was great.

No do elaborate please... I'll be more than pleased to explain about every silly bit in mgs2 including the hydrogenated water Vamp walked on.
In short, the most important stories in the series are, MG2, MGS and MGS2.
I thought MGS2 was a great game althought not as good as the first one or the third
but Id have to say undderated in a way I mean really you have halo which has a decent multyplayer but crap single player and it gets praised?
MGS has a freat single player and the mulyplayer is innovative in a few ways and is also tons of fun
