I dont get it.
Why bundle the game that will sell consoles anyway? I dont know what kind of arrangement they have with Konami, but this just doesnt make sense to me. However, i did read through the thread and I guess it has got alot of people to consider buying a PS3. But is it still a profitable solution for Konami's $50 mil investment?
- Sony is already making a profit on both SKUs, and I expect them to slash the prices by atleast $50 by the time GTA4 arrives. So maybe they will have a stand alone version with the DS3 for $450 and another MGS4 bundle for $499 which means savings of $10 bucks for new buyers, but that still doesnt make sense. Price conscious consumers would rather buy the $399 PS3 and the game seperately, will cost them less. Besides, I was hoping that the 80GB would get a $100 price cut soon.
- Konami said it needed to sell a million copies before it could make a profit on MGS4. It doesnt make sense for them to bundle this game and lose some of the profit. I understand Sony gets some royalty from each copy of a PS3 game sold, but how would they distribute it now? Would they give $50 to Konami from each of the $499 80 GB PS3 sold? I doubt it.
- ONe thing this could do to MGS4, is make it a HALO like phenomenon (atleast sales wise) for the PS3. MGS games while big hits, dont really sell to the tune of 8-10 million copies. Bundling MGS4 will definitely add millions to the number units sold. Just look at MotorStorm's sales. It's going to be the first PS3 game to cross the 3 million mark, and it had mediorcre sales before it was bundled.
I really hope someone here can help me understand, maybe i am missing something obvious but bundling a third party exclusive, that you paid millions for, doesn't really make sense to me.
P.S I just hope we had more data on how these exclusives get bought and for how much. I really wonder how M$ paid to get all those exclusive extra missions and stuff.
