Does anyone else notice that pretty much every company is attempting a MMOG. I would figure at some point a company would look at the economic climate and the 11-ton Gorilla (WoW), this doesn't seem like a good idea. Sure, WoW is a PC and multiplayer icon that everybody wants to cash in on. But when the costs of producing a MMOG for this generation of gaming ranges from $30-$40 million plus the post-launch upkeep is relatively costly. Then you have the cocky younglings that think they have what is takes to take on the king (AoC, WHO) look at it's amazing user base, that's right we can't they already went back to WoW. With those two reasons I would figure developers and publishers would laugh at the idea of a MMOG that is trying to occupy the same space as WoW. Don't get me wrong I think a MMOG like SW:TOR create new space, but that's one game out of so many coming. I think gaming companies should take that money and invest in new IPs or Brutal Legend. IMO.

Source? I don't see Valve, Bioware, Hideo Kojima Productions, Insomniac, Infinity Ward, or Neversoft making a MMO. I think the keyword is attempt, but as you've shown, the few major contenders have failed. But that doesn't mean everyones playing WoW. 11 milion people in a world of 6 billion- numbers don't seem that impressive do they. I think that 11 million doesn't account for the people who purchased the game again or have multiple accounts/ share accounts/ etc.

Assuming all 6 billion people are gamers isn't too impressive either.

Lolz I did not see the news. I am not owned or own anyone. This is called slavery. It was abolished...

Jade_Monkey has a point. +1

Let's just say companies research MMO's because the posibility of profit. Corporate America sees potential in harvesting monthly paychecks from low-middle class by creating MMO's. Blizzard is own by these Corporate pac-men who control your wallet. If they really found the perfect MMO, more people would subscribe. The company who creates a perfected "WoW" clone will have to appeal to a wide demographic and capture every genre (fps, sports, action, rpg,..) fan alike all at the same time. Impossible...

I'm bored of WoW over a year ago but no other MMO's have caught my attention. I've tried out Warhammer Online, thought it was pathetic and I givern it a lot of time (got a level 40 Witch Elf) soon as I hit 40 I started to use the disk as a mat for my coffee. Age of Conan is a mess.

I'll wait for that Starwars game, not that big on MMOG anymore, I don't think that market is going to take over the gaming world like people thought it would way back when.

I'd like to see a MMO that rewards players based on actual skill rather than investing time. This is a good read: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060222/sirlin_01.shtml

You mean an MMO that isn't a time grind?! Impossible... /sarcasm I agree, I might try and MMO if it wasn't the time investment that made the difference. I also agree with the TC in the case that taking on WoW is almost like committing suicide. Even if you make the better game it has to be better and STILL not look like someone that has invested 300+ hours into a game has to start over... otherwise they play it a bit, dream of the days when they were REALLY buff in WoW and go back. The game not only has to be better but order of magnitude better to not have them go back to their current time sink.

Some players like myself, enjoy trying out a new MMO. If i'm bored of a game i'm bored of a game. I don't care how much time invested I put into it, I got my moneys worth i'm looking for the next fix.
