They might have sold a little better on the GC in Japan but those games likely would've failed the same as on Xbox. I've never actually played GunValkyrie. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for it.Eikichi-Onizuka

They would've sold ALOT better in Japan if they had been on any system other than the XBOX. I've no doubt about it.

They even made a special system edition with PANZER DRAGOON ORTA in Japan, and it sold so poorly that the few units that got around are now highly sought-after collectibles.

Hell, I even would call the 2 million units it sold in Japan "dubious" at best. A whole lot of that came from clearance sales.

makes you wonder why the Xbox, and 360 for that matter, did badly in Japan. is it a "we Japanese will only buy Japanese electronics" mentality? or maybe just more games that appeal to Japan on the Japanese made systems I guess.

Call of Duty games always top the charts in Japan, so I suppose it's the former.

Okay fine, you guys win. You guys can declare it as a crappy wrestling game. But I'm gonna continue to play Goldberg vs. HHH and other dream matches in glorious XBox shine & polish.

ok fine for you, I can play goldberg vs hhh on wwe here comes the pain on ps2, which is a FAR better game. just visit any reasonable wrestlinggame forum and ask.

isn't that clear? japanese buy japanese products. just look at the utter **** they accept from nintendo every generation. although I will give them that microsoft and especially 360 are consoles you really don't need if you own a ps3 or ps2

This system doesn't get nearly enough love. It was the powerhouse of consoles last-generation. It had the best version multiplatform games in most cases. It had XBox Live when Gamecube and PS2 were struggling with the online thing. And the hard-drive was great for having tons of room for game saves rather than managing miniscule memory cards, and it was great for in-game personal soundtracks.

But more importantly is the library. I hear it talked about around here like it had the library of the Jaguar or 32X or something. It has a huge a library of great exclusives and the best multiplatform versions of games. And it has a great selection of action-RPGs, which is great for me personally. My favorite genre:

Great Exclusives:

  • Arx Fatalix
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • The Chronicles of Riddick, Escape From Butcher Bay
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Dead or Alive 3
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition
  • Fable: The Lost Chapters
  • Far Cry: Instincts
  • Halo 1 & 2
  • House of the Dead 3 (exclusive until the Wii got a port a few years later)
  • Jade Empire
  • MechAssault 1 & 2
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Panzer Dragoon: Orta
  • Project Gotham Racing
  • Shenmue II (exclusive in the U.S.)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
  • Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse
  • Tecmo Arcade Classics Collection
  • WWE Raw 1 & 2

Great Multiplatform Games:

  • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2
  • Capcom Classics Collection
  • Darkwatch
  • Destroy All Humans 1 & 2
  • Grand Theft Auto Series
  • The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
  • Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
  • Mortal Kombat Series
  • Mega Man Anniversary Collection
  • Need For Speed Series
  • Red Faction II
  • Sonic Mega Collection Plus
  • Soul Calibur II
  • Spider-Man 1 & 2
  • Star Wars: Battlefront 1 & 2
  • Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection
  • Tony Hawk's Underground 1 & 2
  • X-Men: Legends 1 & 2

MW3

BO2

MW2

All 3 are in the top 5 at least. So I think it's safe to say they do.

I couldn't find the charts for the first BO and the first MW though, whenever I googled them it would only show the charts for the latest BO/MW.

although I will give them that microsoft and especially 360 are consoles you really don't need if you own a ps3 or ps2bultje112
^This is probably what Emerald meant about people not giving love to the XBOX here. Note that I'm not bashing what you're saying, bultje, I'm just using what you said as an example, as people saying stuff like that is probably what inspired Emerald to make this thread.

I personally can't really speak for the 360/PS3 thing, I haven't even played much of either, and both have lot of exclusives I'd like to try out. But the original XBOX is more than worth having even if you have a PS2 (I don't think it's worth having OVER a PS2, but even if you own a PS2 it's worth getting an XBOX, I thought otherwise until I was given an original XBOX about a year ago).

topping the charts is something else than selling in the top 5. and overall over a year doesn't come near the top 10 best selling games anywhere close in japan.

I was under the impression the XBOX was the second best-selling system of the last generation. Way below the PS2, but outselling the GC and DC.

The system got lots of love from how I see it.

Emerald_Warrior

I meant around here. I see people bashing the console on a regular basis.

This year, blame "you know who" for the "bashing" really.

I guess, but PC doesn't really come into play when talking about console exclusives. Or else lots of PS1 and Saturn titles (Final Fantasy VII, Panzer Dragoon, etc etc) couldn't be considered exclusive since lot were ported to PC. btw, Katawa Shoujo is freakin' awesome :P

They still took them a year or more to port those games. In the case of the XBOX, a lot of games were released for the XBOX and PC at the same time or nearly at the same time.

Also, for some reason a lot of those 32-bit console games that were ported to PCs weren't as good as the PS or SS originals, whereas when it came to XBOX and PC versions, the PC versions were often the best ones.

Oh I definetly agree, I'm just saying that I don't think PC should come into play when discussing console exclusives.

Especially because, if one wants to use extremes, you could say PC can play anything because of emulators so nothing is exclusive :P

thats because the Xbox was a PC, it had a Geforce3 card and a Pentium 3 CPU , I mean , the PC versions were the same, just with the extra resolution and graphics options. with the 32bit consoles, youre looking at totally different systems, so not all ports are going to come out well, although I personally can't remember too many games being worse on the PC (especially once 3D acceleratos started being used)

Again, it's not quite the same case. There were no emulators in the 16-bit and 32-bit generations. You couldn't choose the PC as a real alternate platform for playing the console games you wanted back then.

Nowadays, even if you don't take emulators into account, there's plenty of alternatives to playing those old games, whether on game compilations or as digital downloads across most console and handheld systems.

With the XBOX and PC however, people actually could weight down whether to purchase their new games on the XBOX or PC. Just how is that different from multiplatform releases between consoles?

I don't see how you could say you can't take that into account when I'm sure a lot of people were making that choice, just like nowadays.

I just say that because PC doesn't really "participate", for lack of better words, in console wars, a PC isn't necessarily from a certain generation either (5th or 6th or whatever). PC versions also have the whole being able to change graphic settings, crapload of mods and other advantages, etc etc.

Emerald_Warrior

If it's the same case than with the XBOX, sure.

However, the PS2 definitely didn't shared as many titles with the PC as the XBOX. There's uncountable games which only appeared on the PS2.

Honestly, most people don't even know half of the PS2 "exclusives". Specially those which never left Japan.

Looking back I wish I had played the xbox more. Playing Halo 2 at it's prime would have been something. Seeing how the Live service matured from there would have been nice.

yeah I agree. a few certain original Xbox games in their prime were pretty entertaining. Such as Jade Empire, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Ninja Gaiden/Ninja gaiden Black, Fable, Far Cry Instintcs and Doom 3.

In fact they're still fun to play even to this day

I have always enjoyed the original Xbox. I ended up getting mine during launch for christmas from my parents. I still remember opening it up, and playing the original Halo, and Dead or Alive 3. Man I sure enjoyed it, I own all game consoles but ever since Microsoft came to the scene I have been more of an Xbox guy.

Xbox Live was awesome I still remember playing MechAssault. It's amazing now it is standard to play people all across the world, and the Xbox also got rid of the long dated memory card, and made it standard for hard drives.

Miss those days but I have enjoyed the Xbox 360 just as much. Great system, great games, and Xbox Live was just awesome. I miss last-generation quite a bit, I thought there was a lot more quality titles, and all three systems(GC, PS2, and Xbox) just brought unique games to the table.

I like the original Xbox. It had so many great games and honestly. Out of the Ps2/Xbox/Gamcube generation of systems I think the Xbox was the best.

I honestly wasn't that impressed with Xbox Live. It just seemed like something you had to pay for that PC gamers had for free, and the only reason I even bothered paying up was that the Steel Battalion: Line of Contact community utterly refused to move to Xlink Kai or XBConnect until XBL itself went down for the original Xbox. That said, it did help push console online services harder than the Dreamcast did, which is pretty nice.
