What do you think are the most important components in a game?
@Lulu_Lulu: I can't say I much care either. Cutscenes are hardly something irritating enough to shit your pants over. Get over it. Sit back and relax for a minute while the video plays.
@wannabesbb: I warned ya. He's too stubborn to accept anything that doesn't equal pressing buttons all the time.
If you care primarily about story and characterization read a book. You will never find a story in a video game that can compare to actual literature.
If you're going to put a story in a video game you might as go all the way and just make it a visual/interactive novel.
1. Gameplay
2. World design
3. Level design
4. Graphics
5. Characters
6. Story
@Lulu_Lulu: How is gaming and literature a matter of apples and oranges when film has come to be taken just as seriously as literature?
For me, I'd say atmosphere and presentation can be a deciding factor on whether I play a game or not. I might not even be able to get into amazing gameplay if those two are subpar.
I play games for the story and artistic experience so I'm going to say level and world design. But as long as it has a good story, those aren't essentials either.
Something to consider:

None of those options.
It might seem a little simplistic to some. But the most important thing in a game is that it's actually _______________________________fun.
Everything else merely serves to enhance the overall level of enjoyment in various ways.
All of those things are important to make a game that is truly great.
I agree the whole is greater than that sum of its parts but that does not mean they are all weighted the same.
Well I'm not sure if it's the most important thing to me, but all of my favourite games have a great story & characters. So those are definitely important. World design would also be right up there.
I couldn't agree more!
Gameplay, but I feel like world and level design are also important - actually I think they should be one singular option.
At the end of the day, what matters is that the game is fun. If you enjoy the game, I think that's a pretty big determining factor in whether or not gaming is worth it. But really all of those things factor into making a fun game.
For me its pacing a lot of games I seem to play have been terribly paced and it's a chore to finish.
I guess for me it'd be single player, then playability (Little to no bugs and not excessively complicated,) followed by game-play, level design, and story. While I do play a lot of War Thunder, I almost exclusively play single player the rest of the time.
Character design differs on weather I'm creating my on or if I'm forced to use one protagonist (IE fallout 4 vs Just cause 3). If I'm forced to use one pre-selected character then it'd better be well written but if it's a custom character, then I'm more forgiving so long as I'm given plenty of choices in designing said character. Say a game like Sunset Overdrive which had a fairly excellent custom character creation kit in comparison to the one in Sword Art Online Lost Song which was so lackluster you'd have been better off to just give the player the ability to reskin the cannon character's hair, eyes, and clothes.
Depends if we're talking singleplayer or multiplayer, single --> story/immersion, multi --> gameplay
For me the gameplay and graphics are somewhat really important. I know that to a lot of peeps Graphics aren't as important as they should be but still.
After game play, story is the second most aspect while playing game. Like I was playing Far Cry 5, the graphics were awesome but story was just average or similar to Far Cry 3
It depends person to person….
Some think Game is all about graphics and in-game physics….
(Ex. Witcher 3)
some think game is all about the story of particular character….
(walking dead or any taletell game)
Some think game is not about about physics or story it all about fuN for example cs 1.6 , payday 2
I think the most important Thing about gaming is perfect combination of all of the above :D
Personally I like to play strategy games with touch of multiplayer gaming….
Gameplay. Then it has to be the story and characters, good character development has always drawn me into things, but it might also be the graphics being only 15 and coming from the new gen, stuff like Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4, Oh boy.
Gameplay of course. You can have a fantastic open world and all that, but you need the gameplay to back it up.
