The fully 3d Grand Theft Auto's.xxxMoreBeerxxx
Not original since driver was similar.
Original probably Okami, ICO, and Mirrors Edge.
Super Mario 64. Every 3rd-person action game is in some way a ripoff of it.UT_Wrestler
Good game but its not the "great game ever made." Rip-off or not other 3d games did it better like Spyro, Zelda, POP, God of War, etc.

Sounds like you need to open up a dictionary and figure out what the word "original" means. Spyro, Prince of Persia, etc, wouldn't even exist as they are if not for super mario 64's "original" ideas.[QUOTE="nVidiaGaMer"][QUOTE="UT_Wrestler"]Super Mario 64. nolan-
The most original game too me is without a doubt Morrowind .I never played the past elder scroll titles and never played a role playing game this huge and had that much fun.You could do almost anything you wanted too do and had a blast doing so.
Runners up would be Mario 64 it was the first of its kind no doubt but it was so freshly original in idea and presentation when it came out that its not even funny. Another runner up would be Shemue for the dreamcast another off beat game that offered a lot more than the norm.
Mirror's Edge definitely trumps everything followed closely by Shadow of the Colossus. The only problem with Mirror's Edge is that it wasn't exactly executed all that well.
ummm. Portal, obviously. And IMHO, I think Destroy All Humans! was original. It's not every day that you play a psychotic little alien bent on stealing human DNA.
I don't understand unique as in no game like it? cause theres people saying like halo and mgs and zelda those game are original concepts there great beautiful one of kind games but not original. Now my two cents is JUMPING FLASH for the ps and BUST-A-GROOVE
Everyone has a different opinion on what "original" means. For the sake of this thread, I consider it as a well-executed idea or concept that has never been done before and probably never even thought of. But there's the obvious fact that it's more difficult for a game to be original these days since so many things have already been done. Which is why you have to take into account the era in which these original concepts come to be. Oh, and I want to give props to another game that I think is deserving of mention: WarioWare.I don't understand unique as in no game like it? cause theres people saying like halo and mgs and zelda those game are original concepts there great beautiful one of kind games but not original. Shadowrun.
A shooter game where you can teleport through walls, turn into smoke, see through walls at the click of a button, use a glider, resurrect teammates, summon minions and lots lots more + four races to choose from. Besides that, it actually worked. It's a sad thing that this game was criticized so much for not having enough maps, doing nothing with the original shadowrun and missing a freaking ladder animation. Because once you look past all that, this game was definately more fun than any other fps online. In my opinion.
MGS1. It's the first game in that generation to base a game on pure stealth. The game itself was a masterpiece and an innovation in the sense that the game needed outside physical & intellectual input, in order to progress.liquidvssolidI think Thief: The Dark Project is the first.

didn't tomb raider come out before mario 64? i don't think mario 64 was like, the first 3D game. lara was doing sommsaults and hand stands in 3D before mario, but mario 'did more', and is more fondly remembered and probably more influencial.
anyway, it all depends on what you define as original or innovative. it could be divided into hardware and software innovation/originality. for example, boktai to me is one of the most original games because it allows you to use the sunlight from outside and beam it into your GBA to kill vampires. but the actual design of boktai isn't that original, borrowing much from MGS and plenty of other adventure games.
someone mentioned rez, and while it is unique, a lot of people could see it as a basic on-rails shooter. rez bears a lot of resemblence to star fox if compare both of them side by side.
ico is unique in its style and atmosphere, but borrows a lot from the games 'another world', 'flashback' and 'zelda: ocarina of time'.
and as stated above, i think tomb raider came out before mario 64, but even then...bubsy 3D came out in the same year (but that was a load of crap).
i don't know, but i would say either katamari damacy, super monkey ball... or.... parappa the rapper.

I think they both came out close enough that saying which one was first doesn't matter too much. With video games, it isn't like you can take notes from the game that came out a week before yours.
That being said, Thief had a much more convincing game of stealth, one that MGS has subsequently taken from itself. When people today make a stealth game that doesn't suck, it usually takes much more from Thief than MGS.
[QUOTE="RandolphScott"]HALO, I mean... obviously. *runs away*Fantasy_Devil
But its just a very good fps, originality?
Regenerating shields in place of only using health packs or something
2-weapon limit, or at least not having an arsenal on your back
Awesome controls for a console FPS
Grenades being assigned to a button so they are ready in an instant
These are all things the FPS genre has since borrowed and made almost standard, for better or worse. Halo had a ton of original ideas, it's just that it also happened to be super popular, so threads like this ignore it. It might not be THE most original game of the last 15 years, but to say it isn't original would be selling it short.

wasn't halo popular for its superior A.I?
Definitely Okami man, no other games is near Okami...Fantasy_Devil
As great as Okami is, it's definitely not the most original game in the world. As it shares a lot of similarities with the Zelda series in terms of gameplay. The only real original thing in the game was, the Celestial Brush. Which is something that no other game has tried to duplicate. Everything else (well, the visual style could count as something original too I suppose) wasn't anything new.
All the developers did was take existing gameplay mechanics and used them well. Not that that's a problem, of course. It's still an amazing game, it's just not that original is all.
Pong, I win.Treflis
the topic was the most original game from the last THREE generations. so, you don't win. :P

And even if it wasn't Space War or Tennis for Two would beat Pong. YOU LOSE TWICE!
I worked in the creative field long enough to know there's NOTHING original...none whatsoever. sorry...whatever you think is "original", it has been done before. Nothing is "creative" in creative field, all we're doing everyday is taking what's already out there, break it down, take something away, add something up, and put it back together. and there you have it, something new.
But that doesn't mean creativity is dead. New is always created based upon the old. That's how human creativity works...but enough about all these good for nothing cynical argument. for me, the most original game is Myst. A puzzle game that doesn't collect trash or push levers. The game world is build upon its unique logic system, and every puzzle is different, yet the underlying logic remains the same. And eventually, when you figure everything out, it all make sense. I've never played anything like it before or after.
