most overhated game series on Gamespot

what whould you say is the most overhated game series on Gamespot?

In my opinion, the GTA series. I only really enjoyed SA. With that said, it's critically acclaimed not only by critics but users alike, so it must just be me.

I was going to mention GTA as well. Weird that SA was the one you enjoyed most, I think that one is an emberassment.

But either way, the sad thing is that GTA isn't a BAD game, the concept has just been driven into the ground time and time again. Yeah GTA4 had someexciting newaspects but they were fun for maybe 5 minutes. Sad to see a series that revolutionized gaming in a pretty sick way become so washed up due to the fact the companies were too worried about the money, so they never stopped releasing them after GTA3. One right after the other, with weak tweaks like 'well u can aim the gun when u drive by now' or something such as that. Say they would have made 3, and then Vice City, just skipped SA, waited a few years, and boom GTA4 comes out. It would have been a much more respectable game, especially if they would have even done away w/ all those side games to the series, yuck.

But, overall, whether its overrated by the kids who have an xbox cux their cousin got one, or have a ps3 cuz thats what a kid at school has, or even by the numb nuts on this site, Rockstar is still banking huge. Good job to them.

The older Tony Hawk series. I was a big fan of the series and still is, but THPS3 got a 10,THPS2 got a 9.9, the forth one got a 9.5.....

I mean they're good games but not THAT good....

I also came in this thread to state I feel that the Grand Theft Auto series is way overRated (GTAIV getting a 10 here still puts this site to shame today, and all those other reviewers too).

But now I see its overHated we are talking about. I assume you mean a series that is hated more than it deserves. Hmm... thats much tougher. Its harder to judge this than with over rated, since the ratings are obvisouly a numeric score, and hate is well, a very harsh negative feeling. But basing on forum posts, it would probably have to be some Nintendo franchises that have been great games but have ignorant posters screaming "kiddy" and what not in the past.

Edit: Darn typos. And back to overRated, Tony Hawk needs a mention to, somce of the games are good, but overall the series gets higher scores than it should too (it just shouldn't be up there in the hanful lof tens).

TNA Impact - regular fans of wrestling games hated it for a multitude of legitimate reasons, but as someone who rarely plays such games because the Smackdown series nosedived after SD2, it was far more fun to me than SDvRaw has been the last two games I've bought (2008 and 2010 being the most recent games I bought in that series).

Also, Star Ocean 4. Everyone, including Star Ocean fans, seems to hate it, but I enjoyed that more than any other PS3 RPG I've played so far (excluding Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles as I don't count SRPGs in the same category). Enjoyed it more than SO3 as well.

I think it is GTA if we are talking unfairly overhated, its a top class IP which has evolved and grown with each iteration yet it gets so much hate since it moved away from the more arcade like feel of the PS2 GTA's.

Gamespot, and while they don't really HATE it, they never seem to give the series the praise it deserves.

Ah my bad, over-hated lol. Probably Poke'mon but thats bcuz its also overrated, so I dunno. Even I hate Poke'mon and i'm giving it props lol.

Probably GTA series still, but thats just because enough ppl realize its so damn boring and nothing is ever really new.

In response to a former message, GTA and GTAII possess real arcade gameplay. Not to mention fun games, no worn out or over used game mechanics and storylines, just pure mayhem... and awesome difficulty. Any game that throws people 300 feet upinto your television screen when you blow them up is awesome in my book &rare to see, unlikekilling cops til you can steal a tank anymore, BORING.

Sonic the Hedgehog. There would have to be a half ounce of poop inside the case to merit the hatred these games garner. Not defending a single one of the titles but people start hating new Sonic games the moment they are announced.

Far Cry 2. I don't understand why people didn't like just because enemies respawned at checkpoints. It would be pretty boring if I killed everyone and they didn't respawn.CRS98

I don't think it was just one thing or the other with that game. I think people wouldn't have complained if it was just the fact that the enemies respawned. It was a combination of the enemies respawning; too much driving for too long, vehicles breaking down somewhat easily, repetitive missions, eagle-eyed enemies where stealth seemed somewhat improbable, and very limited fast travel to be found.

After saying that though I would like to point out that I happen to love Far Cry 2 anyway. I know this shouldn't be used as a way to measure a persons love for a game, but I got all of the singleplayer achievements. All of those damn diamonds, celltower missions, safehouses, ect ect.

Halo. I an understand some of the hate for GTA 4 because in a way it was a step backwards, but it was still great.

People hate CoDs and specially now when they turned into Modern Warfare,I like this Modern better than WW2.

Final Fantasy has a very unpleasable fanbase since every game is different.

Compare the last five games and they wouldn't seem to be in the same series

I don't get the GTA IV hate. I really don't. I love that game and was addicted to it for a long time. I think it deserved a ten. I dunno. Maybe just because it really sucked me in.

I mean yeah 3d sonic sucks but it's not as bad as people say.

I think that 2d sonic had such a great lineup of games that it would be tough to follow. I just wish they'd try harder...
