recently i have been playing mount and blade warband (obviously). so far my army has consisted of nothing but 50/50 of Nord Huscarls and Nord vet archers. (with an army of 40, i defeated a khergit army of 100+ XD) anyway, over the past few days i've made some changes. i've added a few Rhodok sergeants and sharpshooters, as well as 20 Sarranid cavalry (for when the enemy starts running away). i usually have my archers behind a wall of Nord and Rhodok shield, pelting the enemy army with arrows and bolts as they charge (meanwhile i'm off harassing the enemy cavalry) and my cavalry is behind my archers who i eventually send out to clean up what's left over. in general, i take a defensive tactic and let the enemy charge me. normally i win but i'm going to bring my difficulty settings up nice and high soon, so.... (and finally the question) any suggestions to tactics or troop types i could use to improve my army?

Well first of all if your computer can handle it download the mod that allows you to have more units in a battle at the same time, the default 150? is kinda crap! The bigger the better :D The way i play it, which is pretty successful in the hardest difficulty consists of nord huscals + rhodok sharpshooters + swadian knights, I would position the sharpshooters at the top of the nearest hill with the huscals at the bottom of the hill, and let them come to us! I would then take my swadian knights, with me in the lead :D...around to the right to charge into the side of the enemy lines!

I used to use any old mixure of crap and make do with it. As long as I shoved archers on a hill I let the rag tag bunch of whatever charge in and sort themselves out, of course I waited until the enemy was in good range of my archers.

I found that due to the limited number of arrows, the fact they bottleneck all the castles, no tactics worked that well, it was all down to letting the archers thin down the ranks and then go charging in. Nord Huscarls are the safe bet as they are the best ground troop to move in after the archers.

One thing i can say, as the hero use the Awlpike and a nice sword and shield secondary weapon combo. The Awlpike is far better then using a lance, it's flipping lethal! I would wait for the enemy to get in range of the archers, then as my infantry charge my calvery come in when the lines broken, or sometimes I get inpatient and charge in early. I would stab enemies in the face in a canter / gallop, one shot kill fast, stab, stab, stab, stab, stab!!! People die, blood, murder and rape. I would impale the enemy vassal on my awlpike at the end of combat and watch him slide down slowly, except the game didn't let me.
