I have played many games in life, including a few rpgs on the playstation. But I never actually owned an Rpg on the playstation itself. I have oer 50+ games. Not one of the an rpg... Ok, I guess the Sentient it a "WRPG" But it is more of a text adventure. So I want to know what PS1 rpgs you think are worth owning ad maybe a little sample of why. But remember, only WORTH owning.

But of course, my tastes in rpgs is weird so a little background may help. I have played many Jrpgs on MANY consoles. I have played a lot. But there is a small problem. I hated the large majority of them. Personally, some were enjoyable, and quite a few I actually finished, but based on the many, many, rpgs I have attempted to play or have finished, only certain games have kept me hooked long enough to not only finish them, but to actually go back and play again.:

Breath Of Fire 1

Breath of Fire 3

Megaman Battle Network 1-6

Phantasy Star 4

Wonder Boy 2 and 3

I have no idea why these JRPGS are the only ones that stand out to me, but prehaps ths may help you recommend me some top notch PS1 Jrpgs so I can own more of the sub-genre than I have. Because I KNOW there is something out there on the PS1 that will interest me and doesn't suck.

Keep in mind that I can't stand Final Fantasy and will not be adding any of them to my PS1 collection. So what games do you reccomend?

Well seeing as how you enjoyed Breath of Fire 1 and 3,I can easily recommend Breath of Fire 4, which I enjoyed. Suikoden, interesting game, but I stillhaven't played through enough of it to recommend it, but just letting you know you should look this game up. Vagrant Story is an excellent, albeit difficult and complex, action RPG game, highly recommend. Grandia is a massive game with fun combat, and a decent story so there ya go. Chrono Cross is a good game, but I lost an incredible amount of interest toward the later parts of the game and, regrettably, it remains unfinished. And then lastly, there's Tactics Ogre, which is more of a Strategy RPG, but still neat. That's all I can think of right now, and I hope it helped.

I too would recommend Vagrant Story. It doesn't play like the typical JRPG but it's great fun and is quite deep. Final Fantasy VIII is also one of my favorites on the Ps1. Others may say Final Fantasy VII is the best RPG on the system but I prefer VII. If Magus was around he would be praising Xenogears like no other. Unfortunately I haven't played it so I can't say either way. I'll be playing it this summer when I have more time since it has become available on PSN.

Suikoden 1 and 2 -recruit 108 people, so much to do in them, different endings, great stories (not typical kid crap...people close to you die, etc) Lunar 1 and 2 -best 'retro' RPG's I have ever played, especially part 2 Arc the Lad collection (part 1 was short and not that great though) -great SRPG series, each one connects to the past games -part 2 is an awesome game FF9 -best PS1 FF IMO

Suikoden, Sukidoen II, Star Ocean, Threads of Fate.

Stop with the FF recommends already. He isn't interested.

Grandia, I can't recommend it enough for anyone who likes RPGs. It's got a colorful and involving story, memorable characters, a great battle system and epic music. The only major problems with it are the lack of difficulty and the poor US voice acting. Check out my review if you'd like.

I didn't think it was THAT bad, but yeah, the first couple of hours aren't that great. It doesn't take long to get better, though!

WORST FETCH QUESTS EVER Playing around in the town with the bullies and looking for stupid (see trash can lid) armor/weapons was terrible. Plus it starts the game off on the wrong foot/gives a false impression of what is to come They should have just left that part out IMO. I have played a lot of RPG's and that is the worst beginning to a great game I have ever played

Now be sure to read the above post and find out what games match those I seem to ne interested in for some reason. My JRPG tastes are king of odd. Alos, I dislike most Square titles but of course, if there is a PS1 square game that is amazing let me know. Also, I clearly said I hate Final Fantasy for all the right reasosn, so don't recommend it please.

I'm not repeating after this so from now on if you recommend a Final Fantasy game when I clearly said I didn't then you are making me think there aren't any good rpgs on the Ps1. Hopefully, I am wrong and you will recomened good Jrpgs. I never could get into Saga Frontier 1 or 2, I played them, they were alright, but like I said, I don't think it's possible to pinpoint what games I like based on the ones mentioned above so recomeneding games simillar to the above could be a good idea. Ps1 only though.

I think your best bet for darn good RPG's are the ones people have listed above, excluding FF of course. But really, if you manage to get your hands on 2-3 of the amazing titles listed so far, you'll be blown away and you won't have much time left for any other games. I think your question has been answered and your search over.

How can you think there aren't any good RPGs on the PS1? Did you even read the other recommendations? I'll say it again, Grandia is a great game, and very different from Final Fantasy. I recommend it even if you aren't the biggest RPG fan. Also, if you enjoyed Breath of Fire 1 and 3, I imagine you'd also like Dragon Warrior VII.

I did not like that game, but I did not like part 8 either.
For some reason, I just find those games to be boring as all f***.
-don't like the first person perspective
-never got attached to characters in any of them
...beat them both, would never play again

Xenogears. The game i got with my PS1 in around early 2009, just to see what the big deal was with this system.

70 - 80 hours long, it took me a good amount of time to beat it, since i played it on and off, a hour - 2 hours a day. And it's pretty much one of the greatest, immersive and extremely unique piece of gaming i have ever experienced. This game will forever be embedded in my mind.

It's time for a second replay soon enough.

  • Brave Fencer Musashi - Mix-in some Legend of Zelda with Final Fantasy and throw in some comedy to boot and you have Brave Fencer Musashi. A great little action-adventure RPG set in a fantasy world.
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Okay, not really an RPG in the traditional sense. It's more of a 2D action-platformer. But it has a lot of RPG elements: A free-roaming environment, character level-up system, and new weapons and armor to equip. And it's one of the best games on PSX and one of the best game in the Castlevania series.
  • Diablo - Great hack-n-slash type action-RPG. Tons of weapons, armor, spells, and items to find. And tons of enemies to fight and characters to buff as you battle your way through hell. This game inspired many action-RPGs to come after it including fan-favorites like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath.
  • King's Field 1 & 2 - Very unique action-RPG series that is played from the first-person perspective. It has a high-emphasis on exploration and figuring things out for yourself and gives a great sense of solitude to the game. The 2nd game is the better of the two.
  • The Legend of Legaia - An early fully 3D RPG that is similar in many ways to JRPGs, except that the combat system is very unique. It has a combo system used that keeps the random-battles from getting repetitive. You are constantly experimenting with new combos to try and unlock new special and hyper moves. The story is pretty good, too.
  • Mega Man Legends - A great little action-RPG set in a 3D world based on the Mega Man characters, but totally set apart from the rest of the Mega Man games and timeline.

I like how people keep recommending Final Fantasy games in every post.

Anyway, I'll definitely second the recommendations for Vagrant Story and most especially for the Persona games. Very, very good stuff there. Persona 2 is actually 2 games, Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. Unfortunately, only Eternal Punishment made it out of Japan, but there are rumors that Innocent Sin may be coming soon. If you like SRPGs, you could also try the Vandal Hearts games and Kartia, a little game with a cool (but very difficult) battle system that gets no love.

I might get flamed for this, but castlevania Symphony of the Night was my favorite Ps1 Rpg. And for people that dont count that an Rpg, then next up I am going to say either final fantasy VII and legend of dragoon. Leaning more towards legend of dragoon

Not in my post. I hate turn-based RPGs.
