FCP (because FC3 and 4 are so similar)

Far Cry 3. Far Cry 1 is fun, but its a straight shooter you can finish quickly. Far Cry 2 is a great sandbox... But have some annoying aspect such as a story that "reset" your progress at one point, basically asking you to replay the game twice. Far Cry 4 looks better than Far Cry 3 and have plenty of improvements but the setting and story are inferior.
And everyone should play Blood Dragon. No exceptions.
What differentiates Far Cry 4 from Far Cry 3:
Flying machines
Hired fighters to either assist you or use as cannon fodder to take the heat off you. They can ride shotgun on cars and trucks and/or operate mounted machine guns.
Grappling hook adds more verticality at the ground.
Vehicles have autodrive so you can concentrate on dealing with pursuers
A lot more whacked out on drugs and mystical (Shangri-La) missions. The latter usually involve bows and arrows.
Fortresses which are bigger and more heavily defended than outposts.
Certain animals can kill you now even if you're in a vehicle. In Far Cry 3, get on a vehicle and the animals leave you alone. Beware of eagles and rhinos.
The bad guys can now retake outposts you cleared as long as you don't capture the fortress for that area.
You can now fire one-hand weapons while operating the Buzzer, hang glider, parachute, and wing suit. Couldn't do that in Far Cry 3.
I think there are some more. But, the above is what I can remember right off the bat.
The mortar is also back.
Oh. You can also customize the HUD. Have all elements, some, or none.
Also..... there are still towers to unlock in Far Cry 4. But, a number of them are now heavily defended with snipers and armored troopers.
Hired gun, no HUD, Autodrive.
The Buzzer is also a personal favorite of mine.
I played Far Cry 4 maybe a year ago. The gunplay was so unsatisfying. I never realized how much I hated having my character WALK in a gunfight. Well, I did, but few games do it as badly as Far Cry. The regular movement is just so slow, and you can only really lower your gun and run when you're moving forward. Which, to be fair, is how it is in all the shooters now. With something like Battlefield there is at least good sound and oomph to the guns. Little recoil, though. Far Cry doesn't even have satisfying guns. Screw that series. Don't know how I managed to play FC3 three times. Guess I just didn't care enough then. I do now that I've played so many similar games.

I find the weapons in the Far Cry games okay. The games aren't trying to be Doom as far as firing on the move. You want Doom-like firing on the move, try Hard Reset.

The gun is lowered while accelerating anyway. There should be no problem with allowing acceleration in any direction while the gun is lowered. I'm not talking about a sideways or backwards sprint, but it should be faster when holding Shift/Ctrl. Realistically, a gunfighter can look around them while they are running with the gun down. It makes no sense that modern shooters only let you charge forward, like the head of your character has a brace around it. Regular movement (not holding Shift/Ctrl) is too slow. I realize this isn't Doom, but when my character is freaking WALKING when I'm not even aiming with iron sights, that pisses me off. There are many offenders in the genre now, but Far Cry is as bad as it gets.

C'mon. The Far Cry games aren't the worst. You obviously haven't played GTA V in first-person. ;)
Looking at my installed games..... The STALKER games and Far Cry 4 seem about the same when it comes to restrictions on movement. Far Cry 5 doesn't have faster backward movement either. But, regular movement is already faster than in Far Cry 4 once fully upgraded. It's not a big problem for me if I slow down while firing on the move. Move fast, fire short quick burst, move fast. I don't mind moving slow backward either. The terrain isn't really the best to move blindly over. Plus, where I can't move fast, I learned to break line of sight. Moving slower makes that easier.
I don't have ARMA2/Operation Arrowhead installed. But, I do know the head and the shooting can be swiveled while moving in a different direction. Strangely enough, Ubisoft allows the same when flying the Buzzer in Far Cry 4. If you watched me flying the Buzzer in the YT video I posted, I can swivel to shoot elsewhere while the Buzzer is flying at another direction.
For me FC4 is the weakest FC3 or FC5 are both good choices.
What makes FC3 better than FC4? It sure wasn't the story or the protagonist who I found annoying every time he spoke. I found the equivalent mechanics and the new ones much better in FC4.
The only thing I can see better in FC3 is the friendlies getting pissed off sooner if you shoot at them. It takes a lot for the friendlies in FC4 to get pissed off at you.
3 was awesome. It had a great villan, use of drugs, swim with sharks..the only thing I never liked is the textures and lighting are worse than FC 2.
3 is my favourite the villain is most memorable for me. 5 was very good as well I hated 4 for some reason.

Vaas? He's mostly cutscene material and I'm not very interested in those.
Good wallpaper though. ;)
Far Cry 4 has its own watery predators and I'm not talking about the crocodile. Also there's nothing like being chased by a rhino on foot or while aboard a vehicle. In Far Cry 3, getting aboard a vehicle is a patsy way of avoiding predators. Used it a lot myself. ;) Not anymore in FC4.
Drugs missions? Far Cry 4 has tons more than in Far Cry 3. There's also a separate missions branch which deals with the mystical Shangri-La.
I'm probably in the minority here. But, I loved the Shangri-La missions.

I like Vass over Pagan Min I also prefer the jungle setting. FC3 mechanics where fresh and new to the series and fun for me at least. By the time FC4 came around it was already getting a bit old and it felt more or less like a copy and paste job. FC4 was a good game but I wanted more from it and the protagonist in the game was as dull as dish water. Jason from FC3 was a annoying douche but at least he had some character.

All of the so-called "character" stuff in both games are also cutscenes stuff which is really the low parts of the game to me. So many times I wished I can skip them and get back to the gameplay. The mechanics may look similar. But, the moment I got on an ATV, expecting a predator to back off and it didn't, I knew the game would be different.
I might care more about "character" if they translated to skills I can use in gameplay. But, they're just fluff that I have to watch.
The worst part of the storyline in Far Cry 3 is the second island. Once you complete a certain stealth mission, the bad guys don't even shoot at you anymore unless you shoot at them first. It's really no fun when I have the drop on them every time.
I found the missions in FC4 somewhat better. I loved City of Pain where I stealthed my way through a party with just the knife (I didn't have any silenced guns). The party music wasn't half-bad either. ;)
