Bethesda just announced a new Fallout title for the PS3, XBox 360 and PC due next year called "Fallout New Vegas" during their London News Conference. Looks to be a sequel/expansion to Fallout 3 large enough to be its own seperate game release.

I swear I checked my calendar to make sure April 1st hadn't come again. Regardless, I loved Fallout 3 so much that I'm already eagerly anticipating this new title.

It looks like Obsidian is going to be handling the dev duties on this new Fallout game - leaving original developers Todd Howard and his team to continue working on their unnamed project (Oblivion?????).

Obsidian was the dev for such titles as Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Neverwinter Nights. They were also working on Sega's Aliens RPG, but that project may have been scrapped.

Fallout Vegas? Are these guys serious? As if it wasn't bad enough that F3 had nothing to do with 1 and 2, now they're dumping the setting for which they dumped the original setting? Please stop ***ing your own games Bethesda! I mean, am I the only one to whom it is obvious Bethesda will turn Fallout into yet another cash cow ready for milking?ShotGunBunny
Indeed, I agree. But, it's only natural that they want to squeeze out some more millions.

Well, of all the RPG-centric studios left, Obsidian is the one I'd most like to develop a Fallout game....so this is a bit exciting for me.

Sweet. Fallout 3 was/is a fantastic game so I'm eagerly looking forward to this one even if they aren't developing it internally. Hopefully this means that they are currently working on a new Elder Scrolls game because I loved Oblivion.

I am so happy ^^ not that they make another game, but because Fallout is finally known by most people... It is one of my favorite game series of all time.

Besides Obsidian is not the worst dev to make it ;)

That was a shock, thanx for info CrimsonpugTwo. Fine with me I love both Elders Scrolls and Fallout I think they may have done this for a specific reason though.

I know right? Fallout 3 wasn't even turn-based. The horror!

Honestly, i didn't think the game was that great and I loved Fallout 1 and 2....but if you still haven't gotten over the fact that Fallout 3 is VERY different in more or less every way.....seriously, it's a miracle that we even GOT another Fallout game in 2008.

If they have Vegas in mind, I'm sure it's because they've got a lot of cool ideas. That's not "***ing your own games," that's keeping it fresh and trying to do something different. Overreaction ftw.

Fallout 3 was a a great game, got good reviews (but deserved better). In fact I loved it so much I got the platinum trophy for it :D

Well the map may be slightly smaller than Fallout 3's but it may have more quests and a longer storyline :P

Obsidian is like a whore in this industry. They will take any franchise, have they ever made anything that wasn't a sequel to a hugely popular game that the original devs just pass along to them.dvader654

Yeah, and just like Bethesda, Obsidian has a penchant for making incredibly buggy games.

Obsidian is pretty good so more Fallout the better. Also, I think, from what I experienced, Obsidian focuses more on story and they make deeper characters and story. Am I right on this?

Wouldn't you rather have the original Fallout 1 and 2 developers working on the franchise than anyone else? That's essentially what we are getting with this news. It seems too good to be true to me. I'm confident that Obsidian will put blood, sweat, and tears into this game as many of the people working on it probably thought they would never have a chance to work on their most brilliant IP again.

Why Vegas?

What's up with Vegas trend?

Great, now the game that was already too barren for it's own good will get even more barren thanks to the desert setting.

I was hoping for more interesting location like NYC or something.

But whatever, I hope this game comes with good main storyline, something Bethesda never has done well before. Also involvement of factions, so it will feel like my character belongs with a group instead of just another loner in the empty world.

Vegas might be interesting. The barren land will be a part of it but what's happens in Vegas? Get it? It can be compelling with a lot of unexpected things that can happen. Plus, I'd love to see if the developers put in Hoover Dam. Imagine the scale and setting that can present!

mobs, hookers, and gambling.

eh, not really interesting.

I'd probably enjoy more of the political plots that existed in Fallout 3 (Big Dog vs President Eden, Slave rights vs Slavers, etc)

Only thing I didn't really enjoy in Fallout 3 is the lack of factions. I felt like they had a chance to really expand on that, especially with slavers, but it was left untouched and bare minimum effort was put into by making it simple side quest.

and wasn't big selling point of Fallout 3 was seeing historical landmarks ruined? Is there anything in Vegas that people can recognize immediately? Ruined Empire State building and ruined Statue of Liberty would catch more attention in my mind. Sure it's been done in movies quite often, but not much in games.

Well, I think it'll be interesting and fun. I love the whole mysterious and unexpectedness in games like these. Exploring and discovery is part of the fun. And since Bethesda is probably working on Elder Scrolls 5, so the more Fallout the better. Obsidian are ex-Black Isle guys right? And they did a admirable job with KotOR 2 and NeverWinter Nights 2, so I expect Fallout Vegas to be good too. Not as good as the original, but it'll definitely be a good expansion of it. But yeah, Fallout 3 New York or LA would be crazy. New York would be too huge and LA would be crazy. But I think Vegas is crazier than LA with more things that can go on....more crazy mutants and inhabitants that's for sure!

Well at least Bethesda isn't making the game.

They are HORRIBLE when it comes to coming up with decent plots. Obsidian actually do fairly decent job in it. KOTOR 2 to me, was superior when it comes to plot and character compared to the first one (again in my opinion)

I do like the whole Fallout 3 setting and gameplay design, but that lack of plots (main and side) really denied me from getting too deep into that game.

As for NY, I don't think it would be too large. Just make it seem like everyone is sort of stuck on Manhattan, stuck because bridges are all broken and then you get yourself a fairly decent size playground to work on.

I'll be looking forward to this game, but Vegas setting isn't really selling it to me. Mild interest at this moment I'd say.

KOTOR 2 had a far better party system and NWN 2 with MOTB expansion was great. MOTB won story of the year here when it was released i believe (either that or NWN 2 did)

Sucks. Fallout 3 just came out last year then another Fallout next year. Where's Elder Scolls V? Elder Scrolls IV came out 3 years ago, we need a new one! Hehe.

Bethesda should release ES and FO alternately.

Fallout Vegas is from Obsidian. Bethesda is working on a secret project, which is probably Elder Scrolls V. Also, don't get too excited for Elder Scrolls V yet...there are rumors that it'll be a MMO.

I'm definitely one of the 20%. KOTOR 2 was a perfect sequel from a story stance. It was wonderfully dark (Empire-esque) and there was an absolute perfect mix of old vs new. (KOTOR 1 carryover) They even shied away from the "big twist" that everyone was expecting after KOTOR 1. The fact that there was no twist was a twist in my book. Class act from a story perspective.

I am very excited to see this news. Obsidian doing a Fallout game? That's exactly what I've been wanting all along. I wonder which side initiated this? Did Obsidian make a strong case to Bethesda, or did Bethesda decide another Fallout title would be in better hands of some of someone else. Either way, I think only good can come of this. After all Obsidian's strength is their ability to craft a good story and great characters (as has already been mentioned) and that was easily Fallout 3's biggest weakness.

I'm a little concerned about the one year time frame for the release of the game. Obsidian seems to always get pushed in to these short deadline gigs and have a tendancy to not put as much polish on a game as it needs because of that.

Ride the success of one game to spinoff another. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare = Modern Warfare 2. Fallout 3 = Fallout New Vegas. What's next? The "Secret Project" is actually The Elder Scrolls Obvlivion 2?

Good. I want a new Elder Scrolls game, not an mmo.
