The original Ratchet is one of my favorite platformers ever, so I'm definitely interested in this one. I mean they're all really good, but every one since the first has kind of felt like an expansion pack. The original just blew me away though.

BTW, what's with the "Future" tag in the main name? I had thought the game was called 'Ratchet & Clank: Future Tools of Destruction' referring to advanced weaponry. But its actually R & C Future: Tools of Destruction? Is it just me or does that make no sense?

They probably just did that because it's on the ps3, since all their other games (except for Size Matters) were on the last-gen console, the ps2

Its kind of like GRAW 2 was...They have that annual Release feeling to it...Its kind of why Im not really excited for it. Its a must buy when you get your PS3...But its not like you havent played it before is all. Its like Madden...you know what to expect.

Wow. Resistance must have been Insomniac's training wheels. I love the Ratchet series and I'll be there on day 1 for Future. I hope more weapons equal the disco ball in creativity.

That's because the forum does a bad job at resizing them. View them full size.

The game itself has a trailer put up on the PSN. Screens only go so far, an HD trailer on a big screen HDTV looks amazing.

Downloading it now as we speak, and the 2 GT5 prologue trailers... and the Infamous trailer.

Looks very nice, though I'm not really surprised by that. Still, I find that my interest for this series is diminishing with each game that they put out, and I'm not as excited about this as I thought I would be. Maybe a few more months will be all I need to get back into this series.

Looks awesome, but by the time I actually get a PS3, there will be like 4 Ratchet games on it, all of them looking much better than this. I kinda almost wish they would spend another year on it so that when it came out it wasn't just a great platformer, buta totally awesome, mind-blowing game.

Its the same engine only upgraded to do streaming textures as well as further optimized etc. They talk about all kinds of this stuff on the Insomniac Full moon show, its a bi weekly podcast and its great. They have had David Jaffe on, the co-founder of that Game company, and last episode they had the founders of Bioware on to talk about Mass Effect.
You should check it out, its right behind 1up yours for my favorite podcasts.

Cool. I expect Resistance 2 will be extremely easy on the eyes. If they focus more on big battlefields and beef up the weapon and enemy variety (I know Insomniac doesn't want to go overboard with the weapons, but they could go a little crazier) then Resistance's campaign mode could really become something really special.

See this is what I never understood...Why Killzone? Why waste so much money and time on them? You have Zipper, Insomanic, and maybe a thrid party. Why them? Instead of trying to force an annual release out of them yearly. Why not give them a larger budget, more time, and everything else to really get something great there. Instead of forcing that annual release out of them. Doesn't really make any sense banking on Killzone when you have two developers yourself who actually made quality games before for your system.

I've never gotten into Naughty Dog's games (I played the first games in Daxter and Crash Bandicoot and neither game thrilled me though I thought they were competent) but Zipper Interactive has some really brilliant stuff under its belt (I'm the guy who only plays SOCOM offline and I enjoyed 2 and 3 quite a bit) and Insomniac has done some really great work (the Ratchet and Clank games feel episodic, but wild new weapons tend to be introduced each go-round and that's good enough for me).

Insomniac, Zipper and Naughty Dog are developers who make games which tend to be well done but not groundbreaking. That might be a limit of the studios (I read one interview where Insomniac admitted as much) not something forced upon them by relatively short development cycles. Sony's most innovative team (Team Ico) seem to take more time to do what they need to do. Is that because A) Sony is giving them more time or b) because they need more time because they are doing something that hasn't been done before and which there is no blueprint to work off of? I don't know but I suspect the second answer is the true answer (all things being equal why would Sony givethe mosttime to a developer whose games are commercially the least successful?).

As for why Sony decided to pick up Guerilla games. I guess they saw something I didn't. While its true that Killzone and Nam 67 were garbage, Killzone Liberation was quality and Killzone 2 looks extremely promising so it looks like Sony's bet paid off. Picking up unproven developers is probably the cheapest way to secure lasting exclusives. When one negotiates with Epic for its latest fps, one is negotiating for a small, expensive window of exclusivity. But developers such as Level 5 (who is now one of the most respected jrpg developers in the business despite a shaky start with DC1), Media Molecule (Littlebigplanet looks amazing), thatgamecompany (Flow was unlike anything I have ever played, and I haved played games for 29 years) and Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword looks hot, even though it draws quite a bit from God of War) didn't have the world beating down their door, so the terms were undoubtedly more favorable to Sony.

Killzone is a showcase title. Ratchet may be a tremendously better game (or it may not), but it will not make your average Gamestop client go "wow". The R&C titles need to be played to be appreciated. After all, they got Guerilla for the PS2, why ditch them now?

I understand that...Its just...Why are they doing it again is all? Another Killzone Hype up and everything. You saw how Resistence was...Why not try to give them a bit more time and everything. Maybe hire outside the company for a script or something. Use some of your Sony Muscle. Even now with Killzone 2...about all they proved is that it looked pretty. Not much else. The thing is...a game does not have to be highly innovate or ground breaking. Why is it Halo is looked at as the best? Polish, balance, etc. It is just the complete package to speak. It is an extremely well developed game. Dragon Quest is another example...It is pretty much everything wrong and generic with JRPGs. Yet it was just extremely well done. It was classical to speak.

I do understand the idea as you said of picking up the lower studios. Simple...They are cheap. About all you have to do is fund them lol. Alot easier to manage and push around to speak.

But I could see that as a fault also...The fact that they can not really change. Its kind of why Im not really excited for Rachet and Clank even though I own the last two. Its because that I own the last two...I know its going be a great graphical jump. But on gameplay side...Im expecting more of the same like the last 3 were. I know what to expect pretty much. Its kind of the reason why I never cared for Naughty dog...To be honest. Darke's Forture is the first game of thier Im actually excited for it.

Right because it isn't possible NOT to believe everything with 'ps3' stamped on it looks amazing.

Then slap Xbox 360 on it if you have to i dont care. Its undeniable Ratchet looks amazing, and your either outright lying or blind if you cant see that Ratchet looks stunning.

First can we take the killzone crap out of here, this thread is about Ratchet and clank.
Secondly, wherever you take the killzone crap, can you tell me what other FPS has a first person cover system. Killzone is a 2008 title, so no they arent going to show you ever damn last thing in the game, however they showed they have a first person cover system, something which no one else is done. And whats the problem with wanting multiple high quality FPS's, its not like thats all Sony is focusing on and you believe they are then you havnt been paying attention.

I want to play this soooooooooooooo bad. I'm a nut for the series (my absolute favorite series of last gen) and everything I've seen about this is fantastic. Seeing robots dancing to the Groovatron doing 'the robot'? Sold.

Problem is I still can't get past the price of the PS3. Its impossible for me to justify, especially since this is the only game that I'm HUGELY excited for coming on the system anytime soon. Not meaning to turn this into another price complaint discussion, but its times like this that it becomes a relevant and important point.

Obviously something convinced Sony that this time around Guerilla would deliver the goods. Or maybe Sony just saw a bit of potential in Guerilla's existing crew, and thought they could give them money and manpower to shape them into a completely new top-notch studio. Regardless, I think that the demo they've shown has proved their worthy of a second chance. The production values and attention detail (realistic animations, NPC's flinching at near-misses, gun-sight wavering when walking down stairs) already show us that they're taking this game very seriously, and it certainly shows the potential to be an excellent game if that demo is an accurate representation of what to expect. It goes well beyond just "looking pretty" IMO, based on the large-scale battles, war-torn levels, first-person cover system, and destructible enviornments.

As for why Resistance 2 isn't Sony's "big FPS"...it's too early for that. KZ has already been in development for 2 years, and during that time Resistance was still in development. Sony needed a solid game for launch, and Resistance delivered in that respect. Now Sony needs a big game for '08, and we have Killzone 2. It's also important to keep in mind that Sony doesn't actually own Insomniac (unlike Naughty Dog and Guerilla), so I'm not sure how much they get to tell them what to do and what not to do.
