I completely agree with both of you.

Seiki_sands

Still I don't buy very many games so I would rather buy new ones. Buying a brand new game is much better for the publisher than buying a used game no matter what.

Not no matter what.

A poor gamer buying a used copy of a game at a garage sale for 25% of what it cost new in the store probably helps the industry more than harms it.

Why?

The buyer is getting a good deal, saving money and staying invested in a hobby that might otherwise be too expensive until they can afford to buy new games again, helping the industry. What's more, he is paying a fellow gamer who might very likely use the money to purchase a new game also helping the industry. Further, that seller is not stuck with games he dislikes, lessening the chance he will abandon a hobby that has proven to be a poor value for his entertainment dollar, which yet again helps the industry.

Now I agree going to Gamestop and paying $18 for a used game that costs $20 new probably does hurt the industry more than it helps it for several reasons.

Not only are all of the above positive benefits of the used market mitigated by the crappier deal, but the way GS pushes used vs. new puts it in direct competition with the new games, and the sale of one is largely at the expense of the other, simply to give GS higher margins. They want you to return the new game you bought two days ago, and they probably won't ask many questions, because they can give you a pittance relative to what they give the publisher and turn around and sell it for almost full price.

thats a lot of assumptions...
